CompressGIF is presented as a browser tool for shrinking GIFs in READMEs, tutorials, and product demos, with separate cloud-based REST API and MCP options for automation. In its local browser mode, the creator says selected files are not uploaded; that privacy statement does not apply to the cloud API or MCP workflows.
What CompressGIF does
CompressGIF is intended to reduce GIF file size when an animation needs to fit into a README, tutorial, or product demonstration. The creator describes its browser-side processing as using Gifsicle and WebAssembly, with files processed locally in that mode. The announced workflow lets users choose a compression approach, adjust settings, preview the result, and download it. These capabilities are described in the creator’s V2EX announcement; no independent performance measurements are provided there.

Choose a compression mode by priority
The announcement describes three modes. They reflect different priorities rather than a tested ranking of output quality or compression performance.

|---|---|---|
| Quality-priority | When keeping the animation visually acceptable matters more than reaching the smallest file. | Inspect text and gradients in the preview; the announcement does not specify a guaranteed output size. |
| Size-priority | When reducing file size is the main goal. | Check whether detail, small text, or smooth gradients have become unacceptable. |
| Target-size | When you have a file-size aim to work toward. | Treat the target as an aim, not a guarantee. The creator says already optimized GIFs may not shrink much. |
Users can also adjust color count and lossy compression. The announcement does not provide recommended settings or comparative test results, so use the preview to decide whether a particular result suits its intended audience.

Inspect text and gradients before publishing
Compression can make small lettering and gradients harder to read or look rougher. This matters especially in screen recordings, tutorials, and product demos where an animation must communicate interface details. Preview the downloaded candidate at the size readers will see it, and compare it with the original before replacing the source. If text is no longer legible or a gradient looks distracting, choose a less aggressive result or keep the original.
The creator’s warning is explicit: “目标体积并不保证一定能达到;已经优化过的 GIF 可能压不小,文字和渐变比较多的动图也需要自己判断画质是否能接受。” In translation: the target size is not guaranteed; an already optimized GIF may not get much smaller, and animations with substantial text or gradients need a visual quality check.
Local browser use versus REST API and MCP
CompressGIF is also described as offering REST API and MCP access for automation. The announcement distinguishes these cloud workflows from local browser processing: selected files are not uploaded in local mode, whereas REST and MCP processing is described as cloud-based.

| Option | Processing location stated in announcement | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Browser tool, local mode | In the browser using Gifsicle and WebAssembly; the creator says selected files are not uploaded in this mode. | Manual compression, preview, and download. |
| REST API | Cloud-based processing. | Automating GIF compression through an API. |
| MCP | Cloud-based processing. | Automation through an MCP integration. |
The announcement does not establish API or MCP limits, nor does it state cloud data-retention or handling terms. Anyone evaluating those workflows should verify the current terms and technical documentation on the official service before sending files.

Plans, quotas, and what is not established
The creator reports free and paid options and directs users to the live website for quota details. The announcement does not establish current prices or quotas, so those should be checked on the service rather than inferred. It also provides no compression percentages, benchmarks, or user statistics; there is no evidence here for a typical size reduction or a guaranteed outcome.
