To fit an image under a file-size limit, encode it once at the lowest quality your product is willing to accept before starting a quality search. If that output is already over budget, more quality-only searching cannot solve the problem in the tested setup: resize the image, deliberately change formats, or tell the user the target cannot be reached without those trade-offs.
Why probe the minimum quality before searching?
A byte limit is not a quality setting. The encoded size depends on the source image, output format, browser and encoder, so measure the actual output rather than assuming a particular quality value will fit.

Suppose an upload must be no larger than a specified number of bytes. A binary search can look for the highest quality whose encoded output fits. But if even the lowest acceptable quality produces a file larger than the budget, searching higher qualities wastes work: in the tested setup, those settings did not offer a way to satisfy the limit. A one-encode floor probe can identify that case before the search begins.

What the browser’s canvas API lets you control
HTMLCanvasElement.toBlob() creates a Blob from a canvas and accepts a requested MIME type and, for lossy formats such as JPEG and WebP, a quality value from 0 to 1. Quality is an encoder input, not a promise of a particular file size.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
If the requested type is unsupported, the browser uses PNG instead. Check the returned Blob’s type if the format matters to your upload flow, and handle a null callback result or encoding failure. MDN lists broad browser availability since January 2020; its API page was last modified February 12, 2026.
Use a floor probe, then search only if it fits
- Set an explicit byte budget. Convert the upload service’s limit into bytes and decide whether the boundary is inclusive. Keep any safety margin separate and documented.
- Encode at the configured quality floor. Call
toBlob()once using the intended output format and floor, then inspectBlob.size. - Stop if the floor exceeds the budget. Return a clear result such as “quality alone cannot meet this target.” If the workflow should continue automatically, resize and retry or deliberately select another format; explain that either choice changes dimensions or format.
- Search only when the floor fits. Binary-search integer quality values from the floor through a defined upper cap. Measure every candidate Blob against the budget.
- Keep the best fitting candidate. Save the most recently tested Blob that fits and return that Blob, rather than assuming the final trial fits. If no acceptable candidate remains, report failure rather than silently returning an oversized image.
- Validate the result. Check the actual returned MIME type and byte size before upload, and treat encoding errors as failures rather than successful compression.
For an integer search, set the low bound to the quality floor known to fit and the high bound to the maximum quality still to test. While the bounds have untested values between them, encode their midpoint. When the Blob fits, save it and move the low bound upward; when it does not, move the high bound downward. This finds the highest fitting value in the tested integer range, assuming the tested encoder’s size behavior permits the search to narrow meaningfully. The saved best-fit Blob makes the output explicit even as later trials overshoot.

What one reported comparison found
Hao Jia reports a single comparison run on a 16 GB Apple M4 using an open-source Chromium 149 build. It is an author-reported result, not an independently reproduced benchmark or a measure of visual quality. “Fill” below means output bytes divided by the target; a higher percentage leaves less of the byte budget unused.
| Case | Floor-probe float search | Integer search without probe | Step-down from 0.92 by 0.05 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real photo, JPEG, 2 MB target | 8 encodes; 96.7% fill | 6 encodes; 96.7% fill | 1 encode; 64.4% fill |
| Real photo, WebP, 2 MB target | 8 encodes; 94.9% fill | 7 encodes; 93.0% fill | 1 encode; 48.9% fill |
| Real photo, JPEG, impossible 200 KB target | Failure detected after 1 encode | 6 encodes | 13 encodes |
In Jia’s 200 KB example, the 3840×2160 photo still encoded to 315 KB at quality 0.30, so the floor probe showed that quality adjustment alone could not reach the target in that case. For the two feasible examples, step-down used one encode but left more of the target unused; the searches produced fills closer to the byte limit. These figures describe those specific inputs and that setup, not expected performance for every browser or image.

Choose limits and fallbacks for your product
Set a quality floor and cap deliberately
Jia’s implementation uses a floor quality of 50 and a 0.97 safety margin as local tuning choices, not universal defaults. It also caps quality at 99 after observing Chromium’s WebP encoder switch to lossless at 1.0. That observation should not be treated as a rule for every browser, format or encoder: verify behavior in the user agents and formats your application supports.
Decide what happens when the floor misses
If the floor output is too large, quality-only search has no viable starting point for the specified budget. Resizing reduces the amount of image data and changes its dimensions; a format change can also alter appearance, compatibility or encoding behavior. Make the chosen trade-off visible, and re-encode and measure after each change rather than assuming it will meet the limit.

Test more than byte fill
Compare strategies on the dimensions that matter to the upload flow rather than collapsing them into one “best” score:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Output bytes divided by the target, alongside whether the file actually passes the service’s limit.
- Number of encodes and elapsed time on representative devices and images.
- Whether an impossible quality-only target is detected promptly.
- Dimensions and actual output format after any fallback.
- Behavior across supported browsers, codecs and image types.
Jia’s reported comparison does not objectively assess visual quality. Check the visual results for the kinds of images your users upload before selecting production limits.
Why the probe matters
Hao Jia, author of the DEV Community article, puts the recommendation this way: “The one thing I’d now insist on is small: encode once at your quality floor before you start the search.” In his single reported comparison, that extra check exposed the impossible 200 KB JPEG target after one encode, while searches without the probe spent more encodes on it. Treat the measurements as a reason to test the strategy against your own inputs and supported browsers, not as a universal performance guarantee.
