A csperf score on its own describes one configuration: one machine, one operating system, one build, and one way of running the workload. It becomes a fair basis for comparing two machines only when the context around it is recorded and matches, or when the differences are disclosed next to the numbers. The metadata is what lets you tell a hardware difference from a software, build, or setup difference.
Why a score depends on its conditions
Benchmark results are produced under a specific set of conditions, and those conditions are part of the result. SPEC’s CPU documentation makes this explicit: compiler choice, tuning, suite selection, and the number of copies or threads can all change what a run measures. Its overview describes the factors that affect runtime and results, and the reporting rules treat the compiler, the tuning, and the system state as part of the record rather than background detail. See the SPEC CPU 2026 Overview for the suite’s scope and metric choices.

The practical consequence is simple. If two csperf results differ and you have no record of the conditions behind each one, you cannot say why they differ. The gap could come from the processor, but it could equally come from a newer compiler, a different kernel setting, a different thread count, or a different benchmark version.

| Category | What to record | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Machine identity | Processor model, core and thread configuration, installed memory, and platform details available from the test environment | Without these, a score cannot be tied to a specific machine, and two runs labelled with the same model may not share a platform |
| Operating system | OS family and exact version, plus any kernel or firmware changes made before the run | Kernel scheduling, memory management, and firmware defaults can shift results on identical hardware |
| Tuning and environment | Firmware or BIOS settings, environment variables, kernel options, filesystem tuning, and performance-related software or services | These settings are often changed quietly and are easy to forget, yet they can move a result without any hardware change |
| Compiler and build | Compiler identity and version, optimization flags, portability flags, linked performance libraries, and the build environment | Two binaries from the same source can perform differently when built with different compilers or flags |
| Benchmark identity | Benchmark name and version, workload, input, measured metric, and whether the run used a base or more aggressively tuned configuration | Results from different versions or metrics are not directly ranked against each other |
| Execution setup | Number of copies or threads, affinity or placement, and any other parallelism setting | Changing how work is spread across cores can change throughput even when the machine is the same |
| Run conditions | Background load, thermal state, and frequency state, recorded only if measured or known | These affect repeatability; a result without them is harder to reproduce |
| Raw output | The raw run output and configuration files, not only the summary score | A reader can then check the details instead of trusting a single number |
Record the condition that you did not control as well as the one you did. If you did not measure thermal or frequency state, say so in the record rather than leaving the field blank as though it were stable.
What SPEC’s disclosure rules show
SPEC’s documentation is a useful model for what a complete configuration record looks like, even though csperf is not bound by SPEC’s rules.
Result fields
SPEC’s SPEC CPU 2026 Result Fields documentation defines the fields reported with a result, including compiler information, and provides tester notes for operating-system and platform changes. The lesson for csperf is that a score is more useful when it arrives with the software identity and any changes that were made to the platform.
Run rules
The SPEC CPU 2026 Run Rules require documentation of configuration choices that affect performance, including firmware and BIOS settings, environment variables, kernel options, filesystem tuning, and relevant performance software. Those are the settings most often omitted from informal benchmark notes, and they are the ones most likely to explain an unexpected gap.

Overview
The SPEC overview explains which workloads the suite covers and which metrics it reports. It is the place to check before comparing csperf numbers with SPEC numbers. A SPEC figure and a csperf figure can only be placed side by side when the workload and the metric are the same, and even then the conditions still need to be stated.
Reading chart rankings with care
Public benchmark charts are convenient, but they flatten the conditions that produced each entry. PassMark’s CPU Benchmarks site notes that differences such as operating system and overclocking can skew how a CPU chart is interpreted. It also notes that CPU Mark aggregates multiple tests, so a single position in the chart reflects a combined result rather than one workload.
The same caution applies to a csperf result you copy from a forum, a spreadsheet, or a colleague’s notes. If the record does not include the operating system, the build, and the run configuration, treat the number as an observation about an unknown setup.
How to compare results across two machines
Work through the following steps in order. Stop as soon as a difference appears that you cannot explain, and resolve it before drawing a conclusion.

- Confirm the benchmark identity. Check that both results use the same csperf version, workload, input, and metric. A result measured in one unit cannot be ranked against a result measured in another.
- Compare the build. Check the compiler version and flags. If the builds were intentionally optimized differently for each platform, note that choice explicitly.
- Compare the system software. Check the OS family and version, and the tuning recorded for each machine. Documented differences are acceptable; undocumented ones are not.
- Compare the execution setup. Check the number of copies or threads and the placement of work. Matching the core count of the machines is not the same as matching the thread setting used in the run.
- Check the evidence quality. Confirm that the raw output and configuration files exist, and whether repeated runs were made. If you have several runs, report the spread rather than a single value.
- State the comparison accurately. If settings differ, describe the outcome as a comparison of two complete configurations, not as the effect of one processor or one machine.
Where the conditions match, a difference in score is more meaningfully attributed to the hardware. Where they do not, the most accurate statement is that the configurations performed differently, with the list of differences attached.
What metadata cannot prove
Metadata improves transparency and helps you identify confounding factors. It does not, by itself, establish that one hardware component caused a performance difference. Showing that two runs differed in compiler version, kernel setting, and thread count is a reason to be cautious about attribution, not evidence about which change mattered. Isolating the cause requires changing one variable at a time and rerunning under otherwise matched conditions.
Checking csperf’s own fields
This article does not assume particular csperf field names, because the tool’s documentation and output schema were not confirmed for a specific release here. Before you rely on any field, open the documentation for the csperf version you are running and compare its output against the checklist above. Where a category is not captured, record it by hand in a notes file stored beside the raw output. A result with a complete notes file is more useful than one with a richer automatic log that omits the compiler or the OS version.
- Confirm which metadata fields the tool writes to its output, and in which format.
- Identify any category from the checklist that the output does not capture.
- Store the manual notes with the raw output, under the same run identifier.
SPEC CPU is a strong example of rigorous disclosure. It is not evidence about how csperf handles its own records, so verify csperf behaviour directly.
