To compare local AI models for writing, run each one on the same realistic tasks with the same prompt, settings, and source material, then count and grade every human intervention needed to make each output usable. The model that needs the least severe cleanup for your kind of work is the better fit, even when its single best sample looks less impressive than a rival’s. Published evidence supports this revision-based approach as a sound way to evaluate writing assistance, but it does not establish a general winner among local models.
Why the best-looking sample misleads
A standout output shows what a model can do once, under favorable conditions. It says little about what you will have to fix in the next twenty drafts. The Revision Distance paper by Yongqiang Ma and coauthors (2024 preprint) makes this argument directly: it says conventional, context-independent metrics can fail to reflect the end-user experience, and it proposes to shift the focus “from model-centered to human-centered evaluation in the context of AI-powered writing assistance applications.” Measuring editing burden is the practical version of that shift.

A reader-authored question on r/LocalLLaMA asked for “best small models for copy editing academic articles / books?” That phrasing is useful as a sign of what writers want to know. It is anecdotal, though, and it is not evidence about which model performs best.

“Writing work” covers tasks with very different success conditions. Pick one job before you test anything, because a model that is excellent at light polishing can be poor at drafting from facts, and a single score will hide that.

| Task | Success condition | Interventions to watch most closely |
|---|---|---|
| Light copy editing | Grammar, punctuation, and style fixed without changing meaning | Accidental meaning changes, altered terminology |
| Rewriting for flow | Smoother sentences while keeping the author’s voice and argument | Voice drift, structural rewrites, deleted content |
| Drafting from supplied facts | A short passage built only from the material you provide | Unsupported claims, invented details, missing constraints |
| Technical manuscript revision | Terminology, equations, and citations left intact while the text is tightened | Factual and technical errors, outputs that cannot be used at all |
Keep these tasks in separate score columns. A model that needs little surface editing may still need heavy fact checking, and that trade-off matters differently to a book editor than to someone drafting product copy.
Classify every intervention
A raw edit count can mislead. Ten commas and one invented statistic are not the same amount of work. Grade each change by what it asks of the editor.

| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Factual or unsupported claims | A new figure, a changed date, a citation that does not exist |
| Meaning and instruction adherence | An altered argument, a ignored length limit, a dropped requirement |
| Organization | Reordered paragraphs, a missing section, a conclusion placed too early |
| Voice and tone | A register shift, stock phrasing that does not sound like the author |
| Repetition and filler | Duplicated sentences, padding that adds no content |
| Grammar and surface polish | Punctuation, agreement, typos |
Then assign each intervention a severity level:
- Cosmetic: fixed in seconds, with no change to content or meaning.
- Substantial: requires rewriting a sentence or paragraph, or checking a fact against a source.
- Output-blocking: the draft cannot be used without rewriting most of it, or it contains a false claim that would reach readers.
This rubric is an editorial proposal, not an externally validated scale. Its value is transparency: anyone repeating the test can see exactly what was counted and how severely.
How to run the comparison
- Write the success condition for each task. State what a usable output looks like before you see any model’s output, so the standard does not drift toward whichever output reads best.
- Choose representative inputs. Use a set of passages from your real work, including routine cases and difficult ones such as dense terminology, long sentences, and ambiguous references. Five to ten inputs per task is a practical starting point for a personal comparison; a larger set gives steadier results.
- Hold everything constant. Give every model the same prompt, reference material, output length limits, and sampling settings. If a model needs a different prompt to behave, record that as its own configuration rather than silently tuning one model.
- Keep the original outputs. Save every raw response unedited, and keep a copy of each intervention so others can check your grading.
- Have blind reviewers mark interventions. Reviewers who do not know which model produced a sample should mark each required change by category and severity. Where possible, use at least two reviewers and reconcile disagreements explicitly. Blinding and reconciliation make the result more trustworthy; they do not guarantee objectivity.
- Report examples alongside totals. Show a few before-and-after excerpts for each model so readers can see what the interventions looked like, not only how many there were.
What to record for every run
Without these details, nobody can repeat your comparison or explain a surprising result.

Report results without flattening them
Publish results per task and per category. An aggregate rank hides trade-offs that matter to the reader. For each model, state the number of interventions in each category, the most severe intervention found, and whether any output was blocked. Where a value was not measured, write “not measured” rather than leaving the cell blank, so readers know the gap is real.
What the published evidence shows and does not show
Several recent studies bear on this question. None of them ranks local models by editing burden for everyday writing, so each is useful only for a specific point.

Revision Distance (2024 preprint)
Revision Distance frames evaluation around the revision actions needed to bring generated text closer to a reference or to an evaluator’s intended ideal. The paper reports experiments on easier writing tasks such as emails, letters, and articles, as well as more challenging academic writing. It supports measuring editing effort directly. It does not prove that a single metric captures all human effort.
Beemo (NAACL 2025)
Beemo, by Artemova et al. and published at NAACL 2025, is a benchmark of expert-edited machine-generated outputs. It contains about 6.5k texts written by humans, generated by ten instruction-finetuned LLMs, and edited by experts across use cases including creative writing and summarization, plus about 13.1k machine-generated and LLM-edited texts used to study varied edit types. Its reported findings concern how well machine-text detectors recognize these texts. They do not rank writing quality or editing effort, but the design does support recording human and model edits as distinct conditions.

ReviseBench (Microsoft Research summary, January 2026)
ReviseBench tests whether AI can revise research papers in response to reviewer feedback, using authors’ camera-ready versions as human baselines. Microsoft Research’s summary of the benchmark states: “Our initial evaluation results on ReviseBench reveal that even state-of-the art foundation LLMs struggle significantly in this domain, achieving a win rate of less than 10% against human experts, and facing issues like incremental revision, unprofessional revision, and potential data fabrication.” That result covers the benchmark’s initial evaluation of foundation models on substantive paper revision. It is not a measurement of local models or of everyday copy editing, but it is a clear reminder that substantive revision is harder than surface polishing.
A 2026 local manuscript-editing proof of concept
A 2026 proof-of-concept study of a local, multi-agent manuscript-editing framework, indexed on ScienceDirect, reports a blind assessment of six manuscripts. Its abstract says an orchestrated local open-weight 27B model covered more useful domains than the same model given one generic prompt. The sample is small, and the abstract is the only portion available to this article, so use it to illustrate that workflow and prompt design can change results, not to name a winner.
What no current source provides
No independent estimate of writer time saved by choosing a model with lower editing burden was found. Benchmark dataset sizes, revision counts, and win rates cannot be converted into hours or minutes. If you want to report time, time your own reviewers on the same tasks and report that measurement with its conditions.

Hardware: check fit, not prestige
Hardware decides whether a model runs at a usable speed on your machine, and it is a separate question from editing quality. Keep latency and setup notes out of the editing score.
Quick Recap
- Ollama’s download page states: “Speed depends on the hardware.” Its local-model guidance says large models are slow on a computer without a strong GPU and advises checking your GPU and memory when choosing models.
- NVIDIA’s product specifications list 32 GB GDDR7 for the GeForce RTX 5090 (reviewed 2026-10-07). That is one high-end example of a GPU for running local AI models, not a minimum requirement for writing work.
- Check each model’s requirements against the hardware you already own. You do not need a new GPU to compare writing quality; a smaller model that fits your memory may produce a fairer comparison than a larger one you cannot run comfortably.
Claims to avoid in your own comparison
- Do not call any model the best for editing without naming the task, the sample size, and the reviewers.
- Do not generalize findings from a benchmark built for a different task to your own writing.
- Do not treat expert editing or a detector’s result as proof of human authorship or of writing quality.
- Do not claim time savings, or present a hardware recommendation as a requirement for good editing.
