Según un relato publicado por Motorpasión, Yu Suzuki y un pequeño equipo de Sega recorrieron Europa durante dos semanas en 1985 para buscar inspiración para Out Run. El viaje, realizado en un coche de alquiler, habría ayudado a transformar la idea inicial de una carrera por la Ruta 66 en el viaje colorido por carreteras europeas que definió el juego.
Por qué Sega dejó atrás la Ruta 66
La historia, narrada por Victoria Fuentes en Motorpasión el 3 de octubre de 2026, comienza con una idea distinta: ambientar el juego en el Medio Oeste de Estados Unidos, con la Ruta 66 como referencia y la película The Cannonball Run (1981) como inspiración. Según ese artículo, Suzuki visitó la zona y encontró monótono el paisaje. La búsqueda de un escenario más estimulante llevó al equipo a mirar hacia Europa.
Este cambio importa porque Out Run no se planteó únicamente como una sucesión de carreras. Motorpasión describe su atractivo como una experiencia de carretera abierta, donde el recorrido y los paisajes cuentan tanto como avanzar. La premisa europea ofrecía una variedad visual que encajaba mejor con esa idea.
El viaje de dos semanas que habría dado forma al juego
Motorpasión sitúa el viaje en 1985, un año antes del lanzamiento de Out Run, e informa que Sega financió el desplazamiento. Suzuki y un pequeño equipo volaron a Frankfurt, alquilaron un coche y recorrieron Europa durante dos semanas con cámaras, cintas de vídeo y blocs de notas para reunir referencias.

El artículo atribuye al recorrido varias influencias concretas:
- Alemania: la velocidad de la Autobahn y los bosques que acompañaban la ruta.
- Suiza: las carreteras de montaña, los túneles y los picos nevados.
- Italia: la arquitectura.
- Niza y Mónaco: el sol de la Costa Azul, las palmeras y las casas de lujo.
En la Costa Azul, cuenta Motorpasión, Suzuki se fijó en un Ferrari Testarossa que inspiró el coche protagonista. El artículo no aporta una declaración directa de Suzuki ni una fuente primaria que confirme de forma independiente estos detalles; por eso, el itinerario y las influencias deben entenderse como el relato de esa publicación.

De las carreteras reales al viaje de Out Run
La conexión que propone Motorpasión no es que cada tramo del juego reproduzca literalmente una carretera visitada. Es que el viaje habría proporcionado un repertorio de imágenes —autopistas, montañas, túneles, arquitectura y costa— para construir una aventura que cambia de paisaje mientras el jugador conduce. Frente al escenario uniforme que Suzuki habría percibido en la Ruta 66, Europa ofrecía contrastes capaces de convertir el propio trayecto en parte central de la experiencia.
La fuente principal es el artículo de Victoria Fuentes en Motorpasión. ERM Digital reprodujo esa noticia, así que no constituye una confirmación independiente. Una guía de Seguro por días menciona OutRun entre juegos de coches conocidos, pero no verifica el viaje ni su papel en el desarrollo.
