Common Types of Software Bugs and How to Find Them

A practical guide to common software bug categories and a repeatable process for reproducing defects, choosing detection methods, and verifying fixes.

Software bugs are defects that make a program behave differently from what users, developers, or security requirements expect. They can begin in requirements or design, not just in code. To find them, describe the expected and actual behavior, reproduce the failure with a focused test, then combine code review, static checks, and safe tests of the running program. No single technique catches every kind of defect.

Common types of software bugs

These categories organize bugs by the behavior that fails; they are useful explanations, not an exhaustive or mutually exclusive taxonomy. A single defect can involve more than one category.

Logic and requirements errors

A feature may run without crashing yet return the wrong result or violate a business rule. Sometimes the implementation is wrong; sometimes the requirement itself is ambiguous or incorrect. Start by stating the expected behavior precisely, then test ordinary, invalid, and boundary cases. Keep a test for each confirmed failure so it can be rerun after changes. NIST recommends both black-box testing and historical test cases in its software verification guidance.

Input and boundary errors

Empty, malformed, unusually large, or otherwise unexpected input can cause crashes, incorrect output, or unsafe behavior. Test the limits as well as typical values, including negative cases. Input validation and runtime assertions can help detect violations close to where they occur; fuzzing can explore combinations that are easy to overlook.

State, ordering, and concurrency errors

These defects depend on what happened earlier, the order of events, or operations overlapping in time. They may appear only intermittently—for example, when two tasks update shared state at once. Reproduce them with controlled event sequences and repeated runs, inspect shared state, and use race-condition analysis where it supports the language and parallel code involved. NIST’s developer verification guidance includes scanning for race conditions.

Performance and resource problems

A program can produce the right answer but respond too slowly, consume excessive memory or other resources, hang, or fail under load. Measure it while running representative workloads and overload scenarios rather than relying on a code scan alone. NIST’s verification material includes dynamic testing and tests for denial-of-service and overload conditions.

Security weaknesses

Security bugs can expose secrets, allow unauthorized actions, or let unsafe data reach sensitive operations. Look beyond implementation details: check whether the requirements and threat model account for trust boundaries and misuse cases. Threat modeling, static scanning, secret checks, fuzzing, relevant web-application scans, and review of included components can each reveal different problems. NIST’s Bug Framework provides a formal way to classify cybersecurity weaknesses and vulnerabilities, including causal relationships between weaknesses.

How to find and fix a bug

  1. Describe the failure. Record the expected result, actual result, environment, inputs, and exact steps that reproduce the issue. Keep observations separate from guesses about the root cause.
  2. Check the requirement and design. Confirm what the software is supposed to do, including for misuse and unexpected conditions. For security issues, review trust boundaries and threat assumptions; NIST recommends threat modeling to find design-level security problems.
  3. Build a small reproducer. Use a black-box test for user-visible behavior or a structural test that exercises the relevant code path. Reduce the case to the smallest input and sequence that still fails, then retain it as a regression test.
  4. Run static checks and inspect findings. Static analysis examines code without executing it; it can help prioritize review, but treat its results as leads to verify rather than proof. Check relevant code paths that automated tools may not classify reliably.
  5. Exercise the program in a safe test environment. Dynamic analysis runs the software and observes its behavior. Use a representative non-production environment for dynamic tests. Fuzzing is one form of dynamic testing: it sends random, unexpected, or specially crafted inputs to explore edge cases. Also inspect dependencies and services included with the application.
  6. Verify the fix and preserve coverage. Rerun the reproducer, broader regression tests, and relevant static or dynamic checks. A clean scan does not prove the defect is gone or that no other bugs remain.

NIST’s NISTIR 8397 recommends a range of verification techniques, but does not claim to cover every possible verification method. Its guidance is best treated as a practical baseline, not a guarantee that a particular test suite is complete.

Choose detection methods by what they can reach

Method What it does Useful for Limit to keep in mind
Black-box tests Check inputs and observable outputs without depending on internal implementation. Requirements and logic errors, invalid inputs, and user-visible regressions. Only behavior covered by the selected cases is exercised.
Structural tests Exercise selected code paths or internal structures. Branches and conditions that are hard to reach through ordinary user flows. Exercising a path does not necessarily prove its behavior is correct.
Static analysis Inspects code without running the program. Finding suspicious patterns early and directing code review. Findings need validation, and some flaws are beyond reliable automatic detection.
Dynamic analysis Runs software and observes its behavior. Failures that appear only during execution, including runtime and load behavior. Requires a suitable test environment and scenarios that reach the relevant behavior.
Fuzzing Feeds random, unexpected, or crafted inputs to a running program. Input-handling defects and hard-to-predict edge cases. Coverage depends on the inputs and execution paths reached; run it outside production.
Threat modeling and component review Examines design risks, trust boundaries, and included components. Design-level security issues and risks in dependencies or services. Requires understanding the system and its context; it complements rather than replaces testing.

When choosing between methods, compare whether they inspect code or exercise running behavior, which bug classes and paths they can reach, how early and often they can run, the setup and specialist effort required, and how findings will be checked for false positives or missed defects. Automated tools are not uniformly effective: NIST’s SATE VI evaluation found lower recall and discrimination on its more complex C track than on its less complex Java track. That is a finding about that evaluation, not a universal ranking of languages or tools. OWASP also notes that high-confidence automatic detection of many application security flaws remains beyond the state of the art in its overview of static code analysis.

Troubleshooting when a bug is hard to find

  • The failure is intermittent: record timing and event order, repeat the run, and control the sequence as much as possible. Check shared state and concurrent operations.
  • You cannot reproduce the report: capture the precise input, environment, software version, and steps. Distinguish what was observed from what the reporter thinks caused it.
  • The scanner reports a possible flaw: trace the finding through the actual code path, verify its conditions, and document why it is or is not a defect. Do not equate a clean scan with proof of security.
  • Tests pass but users still see the problem: check whether tests represent the affected input, state, environment, and timing; add a focused regression case for the missing condition.
  • Fuzzing or dynamic testing affects a real service: stop and move the test to an isolated, representative non-production environment. NIST cautions against performing dynamic analysis against live systems.
