A live stream usually follows one path: capture and compose audio/video, encode it to the destination’s requirements, send it to the platform’s ingest system, then let the platform prepare playback for viewers. The right settings depend on the platform, encoder, content and upload connection—not on a universal bitrate preset.
How a live streaming workflow works
- Capture and compose: Gather the video and audio sources—a camera, game, screen or other input—and combine them in a broadcast tool. Broadcasters may use software encoders, a console or dedicated hardware. Twitch’s developer documentation describes all three categories.
- Encode: Set the video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. These settings must be supported by the destination and by the encoder’s protocol and codec combination.
- Connect and send: Configure the platform’s ingest address and authorization details, commonly a stream key. Twitch documents RTMP ingest URLs and stream keys; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and also describes HLS for certain capabilities.
- Process for playback: The service receives the encoded stream and may prepare multiple versions for viewers. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams. OBS defines transcoding as creating versions at different resolutions, frame rates and bitrates; access to transcoding can depend on platform and account conditions.
- Test and monitor: Check the actual upload connection, test with representative motion and audio, then watch the platform’s stream-health indicators during the event. A bitrate that a platform supports is not a guarantee that your connection can sustain it.
For the platform-specific details below, the YouTube figures and recommendations are from YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page, accessed October 3, 2026. Platform guidance can change, so check the destination’s current requirements before an important broadcast.
Choose settings for YouTube Live
Protocol and authorization
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between encoder and ingest. Configure the ingest address and stream key in the encoder or broadcast tool, keeping the key private: it authorizes sending to the associated live stream. YouTube’s guidance also discusses HLS for capabilities such as cases where an encoder lacks the needed RTMP support. Use the protocol and configuration supported by both your encoder and the particular YouTube workflow.
Codec, frame rate and keyframes
YouTube Help lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among its supported encoder options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Audio can use AAC or MP3. These are YouTube-specific instructions, not universal settings for every platform.

Bitrate and resolution
Resolution and frame rate affect the bitrate needed to preserve detail and motion. YouTube’s current recommendations include these selected targets:

These values are YouTube Help recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not promises of image quality or connection stability. Choose a supported target your upload can sustain, and leave room for normal network variation instead of treating the recommendation as a safe minimum for every connection.
Check the connection and the whole chain
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection you will use for the event. If possible, test at the same location and time of day as the planned broadcast.
- Set a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that the encoder and destination support, while keeping the stream within the connection’s sustainable capacity.
- Make a test stream with representative content: include the fastest motion, busiest screen detail and loudest expected audio. Static scenes alone may not reveal encoding or upload problems.
- Watch the platform’s stream-health status while the test runs. If health degrades, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again before the event.
A stable encoder output cannot compensate for an unstable upload path. Conversely, a fast connection does not make an unsupported protocol or codec combination work.

Choose where encoding happens
| Workflow | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | Runs the broadcast and encoding workflow on a computer. | Useful when the computer can handle the sources and encoding workload while maintaining a stable connection. |
| Console workflow | Uses a console-based broadcast path. | Can suit a broadcast centered on console gameplay when its available workflow meets the destination’s requirements. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Uses a purpose-built device to encode and send the stream. | May suit a setup that benefits from separating encoding from a general-purpose computer. It is optional, not a prerequisite. |
Twitch documents software encoders, consoles and hardware encoders as broadcaster options. The best fit depends on the sources, processing capacity, destination compatibility and transport needs; the available evidence does not establish one required device or universally superior workflow.
Understand RTMP, RTMPS and SRT in context
RTMP and RTMPS appear in common ingest workflows: Twitch documents RTMP ingest URLs, while YouTube recommends RTMPS. SRT is another option in workflows where both the endpoint and encoder support it, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every platform’s ingest path.

- Full HD video recorder, streamer, switcher, splitter, and scaler with up to 3 video inputs.
- Three video inputs (SDI, HDMI, USB) + networked inputs (SRT, NDI|HX).
- Two XLR/TRS mic-level audio inputs with phantom power.
- 7-inch built-in touchscreen monitor for confidence monitoring and control.
- HDMI confidence monitor/multiview output.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation recommends SRT when possible in that API’s context, citing packet-drop recovery and forward error correction. It says: “The SRT protocol is preferred over RTMP because SRT is more advanced and provides additional features such as the following:” That recommendation applies to Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, not automatically to YouTube or Twitch. Google Cloud’s output ladder, for example, lists 9,000 Kbps for 1920×1080p50/60 H.264; do not substitute that API-specific output value for YouTube’s input recommendations.
Common problems and what to check
- The encoder will not connect: Verify the destination’s ingest address, stream key, selected protocol and encoder compatibility. A valid key cannot make an unsupported protocol or codec combination work.
- Stream health is unstable: Test the upload connection again, reduce the bitrate or output demands, and check using representative motion and audio. The configured bitrate must be sustainable by the real connection, not merely supported by the platform.
- Viewers report poor detail or motion: Reassess resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate together. Avoid raising resolution or frame rate without checking the destination’s recommendations and available upload capacity.
- There are no alternate viewer qualities: Viewer-side renditions depend on platform processing and account or service conditions. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams; OBS notes that transcoding availability can vary elsewhere.
- HDR does not behave as expected: Confirm the encoder’s HDR capability and the ingest protocol. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered when the encoder lacks needed RTMP capability.
Keep a pre-broadcast checklist
- Confirm the destination accepts your protocol, codecs, bitrate range and keyframe interval.
- Verify the ingest address and stream key, and keep the key confidential.
- Test upload capacity and stream health with representative content.
- Check that audio is present and at an appropriate level in the test.
- For YouTube, compare the configuration with its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
- For copyright and reused-content questions, review YouTube’s applicable policies; a technically valid stream is not automatically eligible for monetization or free of rights issues.
