In John Green’s reported 15-comment test, an existing regex classifier produced three errors he rated fatal, while an LLM produced none. That was enough to decide the test’s outcome under his rule: a tool with any fatal error could not ship. The result is a useful example of how context and abstention can matter in comment classification—not evidence that LLMs generally outperform regex.
What the reported exam measured
Green says both approaches classified the same 15 comments against the same grader and grade table. The regex was an existing keyword matcher, left unchanged. The LLM was identified as Sonnet 5 and received category definitions, including guidance that personal anecdotes and rhetorical questions do not count as needs. It could also return “needs confirmation”; the regex had no equivalent option.

That difference reflects the capabilities of the two tools as used in the experiment. It is not a controlled, independent replication, and the results should be read as Green’s report of this one exam rather than as a general benchmark.
How the scorecards differed
These are the counts reported in Green’s article:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Measure | Regex | LLM |
|---|---|---|
| Clean | 8/15 (53%) | 12/15 (80%) |
| FATAL | 3 | 0 |
| RISKY | 5 | 1 |
| MISSED | 1 | 1 |
| HARMLESS | 0 | 1 |
Green’s ship rule was specific: any FATAL error disqualified a tool. On that basis, the fatal count mattered more than the overall clean rate. The LLM had no fatal errors in this test, but it was not perfect: its clean rate was 80%, and its scorecard still included a risky judgment, a missed label, and a harmless error.
Why context changed some classifications
Keyword overlap can mistake commentary for a request
One Korean phrase meaning “don’t pay” shared two characters with an error keyword. The regex treated a comment of social commentary as an errors-and-debugging need; the LLM classified it as commentary. This example illustrates how a keyword match can fire without accounting for what a phrase means in context.

A reply may need its parent comment
For “Me too 😭 happens every time,” the parent comment was missing. The regex still assigned a category. The LLM returned “needs confirmation,” which Green considered an appropriate response to insufficient context. An abstention is useful only if the workflow can send such cases for review rather than treating the unresolved output as a final answer.

New names can expose dictionary upkeep
Green says the regex dictionary did not include Cursor, while the LLM placed comments about the AI coding tool in an AI-tools category using context. The example points to a maintenance trade-off: a keyword system depends on its list covering relevant terms, while contextual classification can handle an unfamiliar name—but still needs evaluation for mistakes.

Where the LLM still fell short
The LLM missed a pricing-and-billing label on a monthly-payment comment. It also requested confirmation on an ambiguous item that Green thought should have been escalated to a human. These errors matter because “can abstain” is not the same as “always routes uncertainty correctly,” and a zero fatal count on 15 examples does not establish reliability on a larger or different set.
Why a known-answer exam is more useful than asking another LLM
Green argues that an exam with known answers provides a reference for resolving disagreement between classifiers. He compares it to calibrating a scale with a known weight: without a reference, a second LLM’s judgment does not by itself establish which classifier was right. The same stored exam can also be rerun after a prompt change or model swap to check whether results have shifted.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That approach is especially useful when errors have unequal consequences. Before choosing a classifier, decide what counts as a serious error in the actual workflow, then preserve representative examples with agreed answers. A scorecard can separate catastrophic misclassification from a miss or a case that properly needs human review. The labels and thresholds should be set for the task; Green’s FATAL/RISKY/MISSED/HARMLESS categories and his zero-fatal shipping rule describe his experiment, not a universal standard.
When a hybrid workflow may make sense
Green describes regex as free and instant and says the LLM takes tens of seconds per call. Those are his qualitative observations, not a measured cost study. He suggests using regex to filter a 20,000-comment batch and sending only flagged items to an LLM. That is a proposed workflow, not a tested performance result; its value would depend on how many items are flagged, the cost and latency of model calls, and how errors in the first-stage filter affect what reaches review.

- Track error severity, not only the percentage classified cleanly.
- Include cases with jokes, commentary, unfamiliar names, and missing conversational context.
- Decide what happens when a classifier abstains, including who reviews the item.

What this comparison does—and does not—show
Green’s result supports a narrow conclusion: on his 15-comment exam, the LLM had fewer fatal errors under his grading and shipping rule, while the regex had three. It does not establish that LLMs generally beat regex, that the named model is a recommendation, or that the outcome will hold for other tasks, languages, datasets, or operating conditions.
Green says the exam and scorecards are public in the ramses203/llm-test-harness repository, in comment_exam.py, with --compare for side-by-side output. The article’s pointer does not establish the repository’s current availability or contents.
