“Command not found” usually means your terminal cannot locate the command’s executable—not necessarily that the software is missing. Check where it was installed, which shell is running, and whether that location is on the active shell’s PATH before reinstalling anything.
Start by identifying the command and environment
A command can be installed but unavailable in a different shell, user account, operating system, or package-manager environment. Note the exact command that fails, the terminal and shell you are using, your operating system, and how you installed the program. A command name may also differ from the package name.

First check whether the executable exists and where the operating system resolves it. Use the command for your platform, replacing qoder with the command that fails:

These are examples documented in Qoder’s installation troubleshooting guide. If a lookup returns a path, the command is discoverable in that environment; inspect the path to determine whether it points to the intended installation. If it returns no match, the executable may be absent, or its directory may not be on PATH.

Check PATH and correct the shell configuration
PATH is the list of directories a shell searches when you type a command. If you confirm that the executable is present in a directory missing from PATH, add that directory to the startup configuration for the shell you actually use. Do not copy an example directory until you have verified where your executable lives.
Slack’s CLI installation guide illustrates shell-specific syntax using $HOME/.local/bin as an example directory. That path is not a universal install location:

Preserve the existing PATH by including $PATH in the Bash or Zsh assignment. A line placed in a file your active shell does not load will not fix command lookup. After editing the appropriate file, load it in the current session or start a fresh shell. Slack’s guide shows sourcing the updated file or opening a new shell; the correct file depends on your shell and setup.

Check npm’s global prefix with npm config get prefix. Then identify the global executable directory for that installation and make sure it is on the active shell’s PATH. Qoder’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the prefix, but package-manager layouts vary, so do not assume one universal directory.

Check for multiple installations before removing anything
If lookup finds more than one copy, compare the returned paths. The shell generally resolves the command to one of those locations, and an older or unintended copy can explain why the command is unavailable in one context or why the wrong version runs. Use which -a on Linux or macOS, where in Command Prompt, or Get-Command -All in PowerShell to inspect matches. Confirm which copy should be used before changing or deleting installations.
For WSL, check Windows paths and interop
Windows executables such as notepad.exe are a special case when launched from the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Their lookup depends on Windows locations being present in WSL’s PATH and on interop configuration. Run echo $PATH inside WSL and look for Windows paths such as /mnt/c/Windows or /mnt/c/Windows/system32.

Microsoft Learn notes: “If there are no Win32 paths in your $PATH, interop isn’t going to find the .exe.” Its WSL troubleshooting guidance says to check whether an assignment in /etc/profile overwrites the inherited path and whether /etc/wsl.conf disables appendWindowsPath. After changing WSL configuration, restart the distribution. This diagnosis applies to WSL’s access to Windows executables; it is not a general Linux PATH repair.

Once the correct directory is on the active shell’s PATH, open a fresh shell or load the right startup file. Repeat the command-location check, then try a harmless version or help option if the program provides one—for example, qoder --version or qoder --help, as suggested in Qoder’s guide.

If the terminal now finds the command but reports Permission denied, the issue is not simply command lookup. Likewise, unsupported-platform errors require a platform-specific remedy; Qoder documents Windows ARM64 support issues separately from “command not found.” Do not treat every failure to run a command as a PATH problem.
