If your Comcast remote will not control the cable box, first check its batteries and whether it is paired with the box you are trying to use. If the box responds to navigation buttons but the TV does not respond to power or volume, the remote-to-box pairing may be fine; TV and audio controls are programmed separately.
Why won’t my Comcast remote work with my cable box?
“Comcast” service is now branded Xfinity, but the key troubleshooting question is what has stopped working. If Guide, channel, menu, and other box controls do not respond, start with the remote’s batteries and its connection to the TV Box. If those controls work but TV power, volume, mute, or input do not, troubleshoot the TV or audio-device setup instead.

Xfinity documents pairing a Voice Remote to a TV Box separately from programming it to control a TV or audio device. A remote can therefore work with the box while failing to control the television. Xfinity’s remote programming instructions explain the separate setup paths.
Check the batteries and remote’s status light
Press a button and watch the remote’s LED. Xfinity says no flash at all, or five red flashes after a button press, can indicate very low batteries. Replace them, following the battery type and orientation shown in the compartment or the instructions for your exact remote model; the battery type is not the same for every unspecified model. Xfinity’s troubleshooting guide covers these light signals.

Make sure the remote is paired with the box you want to control
A Voice Remote paired to one Xfinity TV Box does not automatically control another. Xfinity Support puts it plainly: “Once a remote is paired, it will only work with that one TV Box — until you factory reset it.” If you have multiple boxes, the remote may simply be connected to a different one. See Xfinity’s pairing and reset instructions.

For eligible Voice Remotes used with X1, Xumo Stream Box, or Flex, Xfinity’s pairing flow is to aim the remote at the box, press the microphone button, say “Program remote,” and follow the on-screen prompts. If the box is new, activate it before pairing. The available screens and instructions depend on the remote and box model.

Reset button combinations are model-specific. XR11, XR15, XR16, and XR100 remotes do not all use the same sequence, so do not try a generic button combination. Find the model on the remote, then follow the matching instructions on Xfinity’s official pairing and reset page.

A factory reset clears the remote-to-box connection. After resetting, pair the remote with the intended box again. Also identify the box family: X1, Flex, Xumo, and legacy equipment may use different setup flows.
Check compatibility with your box
Not every Xfinity remote works with every Comcast-era box or supports every feature. Xfinity says its Voice Remote works with X1 models except RNG150 and with Flex devices. Its FAQ also notes a limitation involving the XRA Large Button Voice Remote and Xumo Stream Box. Voice features and TV or audio controls have their own compatibility requirements, while legacy TV Boxes use a separate programming flow. Check your exact remote and box against Xfinity’s current remote guidance before applying instructions meant for another model.

Retry pairing, then restart an X1 box if needed
If pairing fails with error XRE-09017, Xfinity recommends trying the pairing process again, checking the batteries, and, if needed, restarting the X1 TV Box. A restart may also help when an X1 box is not behaving as expected. Use the restart option or the applicable on-screen procedure, and let the restart or system refresh finish; do not unplug the box in the middle of the process. See Xfinity’s XRE-09017 guidance and X1 restart instructions.
Use Web Remote as a temporary option on X1 or Flex
Xfinity Web Remote offers browser-based control for X1 and Flex, including accessibility support. It does not work with Xumo Stream Box and cannot control TV power, volume, mute, or input. It can help you operate a supported box while you continue troubleshooting the physical remote.

Replace the remote only if troubleshooting does not work
If the remote still appears broken after you have checked the batteries, pairing, model instructions, and compatibility, Xfinity says you can exchange it at a retail store or request one through Xfinity Assistant. Shipping and handling fees may apply to a shipped accessory kit. Any replacement must be paired with the box, and a third-party replacement should be checked against the exact TV Box and remote model. See Xfinity’s remote troubleshooting and replacement information.
