Colorful metal detection can mean three different things: colored lights that show a detector’s target category, a display color that identifies its current scan mode, or color-coded maps of a surveyed area. Those features serve different jobs. A red or green light is feedback—not proof of what a target is, how deep it lies, or whether it is valuable.
What does “colourful metal detection” mean?
There is no single type of “color metal detector.” The color may describe the device’s operating mode, provide a rough target-category cue, or appear in a spatial visualization. Choose by the job you need to do rather than by the presence of color on the device.

What do the colors indicate on specific devices?
Zircon MetalliScanner m60c: scan mode
The Zircon MetalliScanner m60c is a wall scanner for locating metal behind walls, floors, and ceilings. Its ColorTrip display is blue in Metal Scan Mode and red in AC Scan Mode; the colors identify the selected scan mode, rather than the kind or value of metal detected. Zircon states that the m60c can locate non-ferrous metal, such as copper pipe, up to 38 mm deep, and ferrous metal, such as rebar, up to 75 mm deep. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not independent test results or guaranteed depths for every wall, material, or target. Follow the device instructions and do not treat an indicator as a substitute for safe work practices around wiring.

Minelab GO-FIND 44: target-category LEDs
The Minelab GO-FIND 44 is a hobby detector for searching soil. Minelab describes five Treasure View LEDs: red lights indicate trash and green lights indicate treasure. Professional systems: color-coded area visualization
Professional ground-scanning systems use color differently: it can be part of a 3D visualization of a search area, rather than a simple light on a handheld detector. OKM describes color-coded 3D visualization for its professional ground scanners. Lorenz Detecting Systems says additional hardware and software are needed to generate color, image, surface, or contour maps with its detector. These are specialized survey systems, not direct substitutes for a consumer wall scanner or hobby detector. See OKM’s overview.

How to choose the right kind of detector

If you mean a color screen rather than colored indicators, that is another feature again. What color can—and cannot—tell you
- It can: show a selected mode, give the manufacturer’s target-category feedback, or help distinguish features in a mapped visualization.
- It cannot, by itself: prove a target’s composition or value, guarantee detection at a stated depth, or establish that a device suits your task.
For a useful comparison, check the device’s intended job, what each color means on that model, and the limits attached to any detection claim. Do not assume the same color has the same meaning across brands or equipment classes.
