The colour is not arsenic itself, and the chart is not a precise laboratory measurement. Use the kit exactly as directed; arrange qualified laboratory testing when a result is near a decision boundary or will guide a consequential safety decision.
How a colour-change arsenic test works
Many field kits use reagents to convert arsenic in a prepared water sample into arsine gas. That gas reacts with treated paper or a strip and produces a colour. You compare its intensity with the chart supplied for that particular kit; some systems instead use an optical photometer. The EPA describes the Quick kit’s yellow-brown colour as proportional to arsenic concentration, with the chart providing a semi-quantitative result.

The chemistry, detection range and performance are kit-specific. A colour chart offers an estimate, not a direct measurement or a laboratory-grade concentration. Do not apply one kit’s colour scale or performance claims to another.

What the colour result tells you
A darker or more intense colour generally corresponds to a higher arsenic estimate on the selected kit’s chart, but the chart’s labelled gradations—not an assumed linear scale—govern interpretation. Some charts have discrete steps; interpolation between them may be possible under the kit’s instructions, but does not make the result precise. Read the colour within the specified reaction time and lighting conditions, and follow the manufacturer’s procedure for recording it.

Field results depend on training and careful adherence to the defined steps. WHO and UNICEF caution that very light colour changes can be difficult to distinguish. A result near a decision boundary may fall slightly below a laboratory value, though some field readings may exceed it. Whether to accept a borderline result or repeat sampling should follow the relevant local authority’s procedure.
How to test water and choose where to sample
- Decide what question you are answering. For an initial investigation of a water source, sampling is generally done at the point of collection. If you need to understand water as consumed, follow the sampling plan specified by the relevant authority or laboratory.
- Use the selected kit’s instructions. Sample preparation, reagent quantities, reaction time and colour interpretation are product-specific. Do not substitute steps or treat an unfamiliar chart as interchangeable.
- Record the result and context. Note the sample location, date, kit and chart reading so a laboratory or local authority can interpret the follow-up appropriately.
- Seek laboratory confirmation when the decision matters. Use a qualified laboratory for borderline or consequential findings, and follow its sampling and handling instructions.
Sampling location can affect what a result represents. Household water may contain less arsenic after storage because arsenic can co-precipitate with iron. For a source investigation, a stored household sample may therefore not reflect the original source water.

What kit ranges and features can—and cannot—tell you
A kit’s stated range is only one selection criterion. Check that the range is relevant to the decision threshold you need to assess, whether the result is visual or optical, what sample types and possible interferences apply, and how complex and time-sensitive the procedure is. A range alone does not establish accuracy or suitability for a particular decision.

- DO-IT-YOURSELF screening of any freshwater supply for Arsenic (tap water, well water, ponds, lakes, streams etc.). Arsenic occurs naturally in the earth's crust, is found in more than 50% of U.S. water supplies and can cause organ-cancer in humans and animals.
- PATENT PENDING DIY TECHNOLOGIES indicate Arsenic concentration ranges of 0 - 500 PPB.
- CERTIFIED “ACCURATE” by EPA-certified scientists with over 150 years of combined experience in testing drinking water. 10 PPB is the USEPA’s Maximum Contamination Level for Arsenic in drinking water. However, no amount of Arsenic is safe to consume.
- FAST RESULTS: At-home screening delivers your test results in just 30 minutes. Unlike most other DIY kits, this kit tests without messy test strips. Includes detailed instructions. One test per kit. NOTE: Testing for Arsenic at a lab can cost hundreds of dollars, making this kit a cost-effective at-home option to screen for Arsenic.
- OPTIONAL TESTING AT OUR EPA-CERTIFIED LAB: Inside this same package is a second kit that provides everything needed to collect a water sample and send it to our EPA-certified lab for professional analysis. You have multiple testing packages to choose from, for up to 48 different parameters (see attached list). *Note: Fees are required for optional testing at our EPA-certified lab.
| Example in WHO/UNICEF primer | Reported range |
|---|---|
| Acustrip low-range kit | 2–160 ppb |
| Palintest Visual Arsenic Detection Kit | 10–500 ppb |
| Palintest Digital Arsenic Test Kit | 2–100 ppb |
The EPA’s historical verification report describes a Quick-kit chart with gradations from 0 through 500 ppb. That is the chart’s span, not a claim of uniform precision across it or evidence of current retail availability. In that verification, EPA compared results with laboratory ICP-MS and evaluated accuracy, precision, linearity, matrix interference, operator bias, and false-positive and false-negative rates. Those results apply to that specific kit and verification—not to colour-change tests as a class.

For a decision that could affect whether water is accepted for use, use a qualified laboratory rather than treating an at-home colour chart as a safety certificate. WHO identifies several analytical approaches: silver diethyldithiocarbamate spectrophotometry, graphite furnace atomic absorption, hydride-generation atomic absorption, and ICP-MS. WHO’s 2019 background document says the atomic absorption and ICP-MS methods are more sensitive than the silver spectrophotometric method; it reports a detection limit of about 1 µg/L for the silver method.

- Accurate Arsenic Water Test Kit - Designed to detect arsenic levels in water with a testing range of 0–0.5 ppm (0–500 ppb). The reading scale includes 0.01, 0.025, 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 ppm. To convert ppm to ppb, simply multiply by 1,000. The color on the chart changes from light to dark, allowing for clear and easy interpretation of results.
- Easy-to-Follow Testing Process - Please read the instructions carefully before use. To begin, pour 100ml of your water sample into the provided reaction bottle. Add the reagents as directed and mix well. Bend the test strip and secure it in the cap so that the reactive pad is exposed to the gas inside the bottle—do not submerge the strip in the liquid. After 30 minutes, compare the test strip to the color chart on the bottle to determine the arsenic level.
- Versatile Applications - This arsenic test kit is suitable for a variety of water sources. Whether you're testing home tap water, private well water, or water in outdoor, agricultural, or industrial settings, it offers reliable and convenient performance wherever you need it.
- What's Included - Arsenic test kit provides materials for five complete tests. It includes a reusable reaction bottle, one bottle of multi-use Reagent I, five single-use tubes of Reagent II and Reagent III, a vial with five arsenic test strips, and five pairs of disposable gloves.
- Safety Note - Always perform the test in a well-ventilated area. Do not touch the reactive pad on the test strips. Use the included gloves during testing, and be sure to read the full instructions before getting started.
Ask the laboratory or relevant authority which method and sampling procedure are appropriate for your decision. For comparison, 1 µg/L is numerically equivalent to 1 ppb in water; the field-kit ranges above should not be read as proof that a kit can resolve a specific threshold reliably.
