Colorlib Error 404 V9 is a free, editable HTML/CSS design for a website’s missing-page screen, with a call to action (CTA) that gives visitors a route forward. It supplies the page’s appearance—not the server configuration. To make it a real 404, your site must also return the HTTP 404 status when someone requests a missing URL.
What Colorlib Error 404 V9 includes
Colorlib describes V9 as “A 100% flexible and responsive free error page with a CTA template that you can implement to any website or blog.” Its page characterizes the design as editable, and Colorlib’s 2026 guide describes V9 as a neutral corporate-style page built with plain HTML and CSS, using the Cabin font. The guide notes a home link and a standard message for content that is missing or moved.

The listing identifies Colorlib as the author and gives the license as CC BY 3.0. Its metadata is inconsistent: the page is dated March 25, 2021, while a separate “Released” field says 2025. Those fields do not establish one unambiguous release year. See Colorlib’s V9 template page.
V9 is one design in a broader collection: Colorlib’s September 28, 2026 guide is titled around 32 free 404 and error-page templates. That collection figure is not a count of V9 features or a claim that every template works the same way.

Why the design and the HTTP 404 status are different
A visitor sees the rendered error page; browsers, crawlers, and other clients also receive an HTTP status from the server. A custom design can look like a missing-page error while the server incorrectly responds with HTTP 200, which signals success. The HTML template alone does not configure that response.
Colorlib’s 2026 guide advises verifying that the page returns HTTP 404 rather than 200, warning that soft 404s can waste crawl budget and may allow an error page to be indexed. That is guidance from Colorlib, not a quoted statement from Google. For SEO, the practical distinction is to ensure that genuinely missing URLs return 404; a polished design does not substitute for the correct status.

What a useful missing-page screen should offer
Make the problem clear and the next action easy to spot. Colorlib recommends a plain missing-page message, a link to the home page, and ideally site search or links to popular content. V9’s described home link and CTA provide a starting point; adapt the CTA to the destination that best helps your visitors.

- Make the home-page link or primary CTA obvious.
- Add site search or useful popular-content links when your site has them.
- Match the page to your site’s branding and, where appropriate, its existing header and footer.
How to make the server show a real 404 page
The configuration depends on how the site is hosted. Colorlib’s guide gives these examples for a static 404 file named 404.html:

These are configuration examples, not universal drop-in instructions: the correct file location and setup depend on your server and site. After implementation, request a URL that does not exist and inspect the response status. The missing URL should return 404, not 200. When a WordPress plugin may be a better fit
If you want to edit a 404 design inside WordPress rather than integrate a standalone HTML/CSS template, Colorlib also documents a separate project: Colorlib 404 Customizer. The project documentation says the plugin serves a real 404 and adds noindex; those are the project’s claims, not independent test results. Repository documentation viewed on October 8, 2026 lists WordPress 6.0 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer, says it is tested through WordPress 7.0, and identifies the license as GPLv3-or-later. It also lists version 1.1.0 with a changelog date of 10.08.2026. Check the current repository details before installing, since compatibility declarations and versions can change. Choose based on how your site is built and how much integration work you want to manage. Either way, consider whether the page’s navigation fits your branding and whether it gives visitors a useful way to continue. The template listing does not establish that V9 includes site search.
