It can suit a site that wants a simple, space-themed visual, but downloading the design does not configure your site’s error handling: the server or WordPress route must still return a genuine HTTP 404 for a missing page.
What Colorlib Error 404 V10 includes
Colorlib’s September 28, 2026 roundup describes V10 as a plain HTML and CSS page with a full-bleed background photo beneath a deep blue wash. It uses Montserrat type and centers the experience on a single “Go To Homepage” button. Colorlib recommends replacing the supplied image with one of your own. Read Colorlib’s 2026 roundup.

The layout is deliberately spare: it gives a lost visitor a route back to the homepage, but the described V10 design does not include search or popular-content links. If visitors often arrive at broken links deep in a large site, those extra routes may be more useful than a single homepage action. Other entries in Colorlib’s category include options such as search or social links. See the category overview.
Why Colorlib’s framework descriptions differ
There is a discrepancy between Colorlib’s two pages. The September 2026 roundup calls V10 plain HTML and CSS, while the standalone template page describes it as a Bootstrap Framework tool and labels it “Released: 2025.” The standalone page also identifies Colorlib as the author and lists a CC BY 3.0 license. Treat these as separate page descriptions rather than assuming they document the same implementation in identical terms. Check the standalone V10 page.

The license label applies to the template page, but the reviewed page does not establish whether the bundled photograph has the same rights or can be redistributed. Before reusing or distributing the page, check the applicable license and confirm the image rights. Do not assume the photo is cleared just because the template page displays a license.
Choose between the standalone page and a WordPress option
The standalone V10 download is suited to a site where you can edit and deploy page files and configure the server’s error handling. For WordPress, Colorlib’s 404 Customizer is a separate plugin, not part of the V10 download. Its repository documents 20 ready-made designs, live customization, custom CSS, and optional integration with a theme’s header and footer.
Rank #2
| Option | Platform and editing | Documented licensing and requirements | Documented behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| V10 standalone template | HTML/CSS page, as described in the 2026 roundup; adapt files and configure the site’s error handling | Standalone page lists CC BY 3.0; its bundled-photo rights are not established there | Photo background, blue wash, and homepage button |
| Colorlib 404 Customizer | Separate WordPress plugin; live customization, custom CSS, optional theme header/footer integration | GPLv3-or-later; minimum WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4; repository lists stable tag 1.1.0 | Repository says it serves a real 404 status and adds a noindex tag; these are project claims, not independent testing |
The plugin details are documented in the Colorlib 404 Customizer WordPress repository. Its requirements and license are distinct from the standalone template’s metadata.

Adapt and connect the page to your site
- Adjust the page: replace the background with an image you have rights to use, then adapt colors, branding, and links to match your site. Make the error message explicit and keep the next action easy to find.
- Save the error document: Colorlib’s roundup uses
404.htmlin its server examples. Use the actual path and filename you deploy. - Configure the server: for Apache, the example is
ErrorDocument 404 /404.html. For nginx, it iserror_page 404 /404.html;. Apply the rule in the appropriate server configuration for your setup. - For WordPress, use the theme route: Colorlib notes that themes generally use
404.php. The standalone HTML file will not automatically replace that route; integrate the design into the theme or use a suitable WordPress option. - Test a missing URL: request a URL that does not exist and verify both that the custom page appears and that the response status is 404. A correct-looking page alone does not confirm correct server behavior.
These configuration examples come from Colorlib’s 2026 roundup; exact deployment steps can depend on the server and site setup.

How do I make my server actually show a custom 404 page?
Save the page at a known path, then configure your server or application to use it when a requested URL is missing. Apache’s ErrorDocument and nginx’s error_page directives are examples above. In a WordPress theme, the usual route is 404.php. After configuration, test an invalid URL rather than relying on a preview of the HTML file.
Should a 404 page return a 404 status code?
Yes. A missing page should return HTTP 404, not HTTP 200. Google Search Central warns that a not-found page returning 200 can be treated as a soft 404. Google’s crawling-errors guidance says, “Custom 404 pages are created solely for users.” If the content has moved and there is a clear replacement, Google recommends redirecting to that replacement instead of showing a not-found page. Read Google Search Central’s crawling-errors guidance.

What should a good 404 page contain?
Tell visitors clearly that the requested page was not found and offer a useful next step. V10’s homepage button provides one. Depending on the site, a search box or links to popular content can help visitors recover without returning to the homepage first; Colorlib also points to search and social links as possible elements. Colorlib’s roundup describes V10 as a single-action design, while its 404 template category discusses other page elements.

Do custom 404 pages help SEO?
The visual design itself is not an SEO fix. Its purpose is to help users, while correct status behavior tells crawlers that the requested URL is missing. Returning HTTP 200 for a missing page risks soft-404 treatment; return a genuine 404 unless there is a clear replacement URL to redirect to, as described in Google’s guidance.
