Color-Space Conversion: How Profiles Transform Color Values

Color-space conversion changes channel values to represent intended colors in a different encoding or output profile. Here’s how ICC profiles and the PCS connect the transforms.

Color-space conversion changes color values from one defined encoding or profile to another so the destination can reproduce the intended color as closely as its capabilities allow. The numbers may change even when the goal is to preserve the color’s appearance: RGB and CMYK use different encodings and often describe different output conditions.

What color-space conversion means

A color space is a mathematical way to represent colors. Color-space conversion transforms values expressed in one color encoding or profile into values expressed in another. For example, an image prepared in an RGB encoding for display may be converted to CMYK for a particular print condition.

The conversion aims to carry the intended color meaning into the destination—not to keep the original channel numbers unchanged. The International Color Consortium (ICC) describes profiles with the colorSpace profile class as converting between a color encoding and the Profile Connection Space.

Why RGB, CMYK, and other values change

RGB and CMYK represent color differently, and their values can refer to different devices, media, or output conditions. A conversion therefore recalculates the channel values for the destination. The RGB triplet for a color will not generally be the same as its CMYK combination, even when the workflow is trying to preserve the perceived color.

There is another constraint: a destination may not be capable of reproducing every color in the source. When that happens, the conversion must map source colors into the destination’s available range. The resulting appearance can differ, depending on the profiles, destination conditions, and transform choices. The ICC’s profile introduction explains how profiles connect encodings through a common reference space.

How ICC profile conversion works

In a typical ICC-managed conversion, the source and destination profiles connect through the Profile Connection Space (PCS), while a Color Management Module (CMM) applies the transforms. The ICC describes the PCS as the virtual destination for input transforms and the virtual source for output transforms.

  • EASY SETUP: Guided 1 2 3 workflow makes calibration fast and approachable, helping photographers and creators achieve more accurate color without complicated settings, so you can edit with confidence and trust what you see on screen.
  • COLOR ACCURACY: Corrects common monitor color shifts to deliver truer tones and more reliable contrast, improving consistency across editing sessions and helping your images look closer to final output on other screens and devices.
  • DUAL DISPLAY SUPPORT: Calibrates up to 2 monitors for matching color across a multi screen workspace, ideal for photo editing, video work, and creative setups where consistent viewing on both displays matters.
  • BEFORE AFTER CHECK: Built in comparison view lets you instantly see the difference after calibration, making it easy to confirm improved accuracy and maintain consistent results by repeating the process on a regular schedule.
  1. Source profile: Describes how the source values relate to the PCS.
  2. Source transform: The CMM maps the source values into the PCS using the source profile.
  3. Destination transform: The destination profile maps from the PCS to values the destination encoding can use.
  4. Output: The resulting values reflect the destination profile and the selected transform, including how colors outside the destination’s capabilities are handled.

Using the PCS gives compatible input and output transforms a shared reference. For standard ICC v2 and v4 workflows, the reference PCS is based on CIE color matching and standardized D50 illumination. Depending on the profiles involved, PCS processing can use XYZ or Lab representations. See the ICC’s connection guide and part two.

Color space, color encoding, profile, PCS, and CMM

  • Color space: A mathematical way to represent colors, such as XYZ or a particular RGB space.
  • Color encoding: A fuller description of how color values are encoded, which may include the color space, reference medium, and viewing conditions. The ICC notes that “color space” is commonly used to mean “color encoding,” though the terms are not strictly synonymous in its registry usage. See the ICC Three Component Color Encoding Registry.
  • ICC profile: Data containing transform information that connects an encoding or device to the PCS.
  • Profile Connection Space (PCS): The shared reference interface between ICC profile transforms.
  • Color Management Module (CMM): Software that applies and connects the transforms.
  • Rendering intent: A transform choice that affects how source colors are mapped when the destination has different capabilities. The appropriate choice depends on the workflow and output; there is no universally best option established for every case.

What to check when colors look different

To interpret a conversion or compare two results, identify the source and destination profiles, the destination medium or device, and the rendering intent or other transform choice. Then distinguish a change in the numeric values from a change in perceived appearance: different numbers are expected across different encodings, while a visible shift can also reflect gamut limits or the output workflow.

ICC specifications provide the framework for profile-based color management. The ICC says the current v4 specification is ICC.1:2022, profile version 4.4.0.0. Its status page notes an April 2025 amendment concerning the Adaptive Gain Curve Tag and separately describes a further change as anticipated while SMPTE considered approval for video; that anticipated change should not be treated as completed approval. The ICC also says iccMAX was published as ISO 20677 in 2019 for color-management needs extending beyond v4, including spectral data and modified PCS options. See the ICC specification overview.
