There is not enough verified price and valuation data here to conclude that Cognex (NASDAQ: CGNX) is a buy now—or that investors should wait. The operating picture has improved sharply: Cognex reported record second-quarter 2026 revenue and higher margins, and management issued upbeat guidance. But strong results do not establish that the shares are attractively priced. The proposed RealSense acquisition adds a growth opportunity as well as closing and integration risk.
The practical decision is to compare the current share price with a defensible view of future earnings or cash flow, Cognex’s own valuation history, and relevant peers, while accounting for your time horizon and risk tolerance. The operating evidence below can inform that work; it cannot substitute for it.

What does Cognex do, and why does that matter to investors?
Cognex makes machine-vision systems and sensors used to automate tasks such as inspecting products and identifying items in manufacturing and distribution. It is an industrial automation company, not a consumer-facing artificial-intelligence business. Its results therefore depend in part on businesses investing in automation and on Cognex maintaining competitive products and customer relationships.

What do Cognex’s latest results say?
For the quarter ended July 5, 2026, Cognex reported revenue of $291 million, a quarterly record and 17% higher year over year (16% on a constant-currency basis). Operating margin was 29.4%; adjusted EBITDA margin was 32.2%; and adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) was $0.45, up 80% year over year. GAAP diluted EPS was $0.43. Cognex said strength was broad across most major end markets. These are historical results, not a promise that the pace will continue. The figures are from the company’s August 5, 2026 release (Cognex Q2 2026 results and outlook).
The margin improvement is notable in context. For full-year 2025, Cognex reported revenue growth of 9% (8% at constant currency and 7% excluding a one-time commercial-partnership benefit), an operating margin of 16.3%, and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 21.5% (20.7% excluding that benefit). Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.02, up 38%. The company said it returned $206 million to shareholders, including $151 million in share repurchases. These prior-year figures help show the trajectory but are superseded by the Q2 2026 release for the latest operating results (Cognex Q4 and full-year 2025 results).

What has management forecast?
For Q3 2026, management guided to revenue of $300 million–$320 million, adjusted EBITDA margin of 32%–35%, and adjusted diluted EPS of $0.50–$0.54. For full-year 2026, it described its outlook as strong double-digit revenue growth and significant year-over-year profitability expansion. These are management forecasts, not guarantees. The release also says Cognex could not, without unreasonable effort, forecast or reconcile certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures to GAAP. Adjusted figures and guidance should therefore be read with that limitation in mind (Cognex Q2 2026 results and outlook).

On September 22, 2026, Cognex announced a definitive agreement to acquire RealSense, a depth-sensing camera and robotic-perception company, for approximately $500 million in cash from existing cash and investments. Closing was expected in Q4 2026, subject to customary conditions; it had not occurred as of October 3, 2026. Before closing, RealSense’s facial-authentication line is to be spun out, and the announcement describes employee-retention arrangements.

Cognex estimated that RealSense would generate $80 million–$90 million in 2026 revenue, more than 50% growth over the prior year. It also estimated the robotic-perception market at $600 million today, growing more than 25% annually to approximately $1.6 billion by 2030. These are company estimates, not independently verified forecasts. The transaction could extend Cognex into an adjacent market, but its value to shareholders will depend on closing, execution, integration, and the acquired business’s actual performance.
Cognex President and CEO Matt Moschner called RealSense “a compelling strategic expansion for Cognex into robotic perception, one of the most attractive adjacent markets in machine vision.” CFO Dennis Fehr said the deal “is expected to be strongly accretive to Cognex’s growth profile.” Both are management’s forward-looking views, not established outcomes. The company’s announcement provides the transaction details (Cognex to acquire RealSense).

What could go wrong?
Cognex’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies risks that matter to the timing decision, including:
- Cyclical customer spending: Purchasing can change with business conditions and seasonality. Cognex is exposed to customer industries including logistics, consumer electronics, and automotive.
- Competition and technology change: Competitive pressure or technology obsolescence could weaken demand; product quality and customer relationships also matter to the business.
- Acquisition execution: The RealSense transaction has not closed, and integrating an acquired business can be difficult.
- Macro and international exposure: Global economic conditions, interest rates, inflation, foreign-exchange movements, and international operations can affect results.
- Share-price volatility: The stock can fluctuate, so a sound operating outlook does not remove the risk of losses or a poor entry price.
These risks are discussed in Cognex’s filing (Cognex 2025 Form 10-K).

Buy now or wait: what should you compare?
A timing decision needs current, dated market data alongside operating evidence. No current CGNX quote, valuation multiple, peer valuation, analyst consensus, or valuation history is established here, so there is no factual basis for an entry price or a claim that the shares are cheap or expensive. Before deciding, compare:
- Price with a business-based estimate: Use a clearly stated earnings or cash-flow estimate and test how the conclusion changes if growth, margins, or cash generation fall short.
- Valuation with relevant benchmarks: Compare CGNX with its own historical valuation and comparable automation or machine-vision businesses using the same dated measures. A strong quarter alone does not answer whether the price already reflects recovery.
- Durability of the rebound: Consider whether recent growth and margin expansion can persist through changing customer spending and across Cognex’s end markets.
- Deal economics and execution: Account for the cash purchase price, the conditional closing, integration, and the uncertainty around RealSense’s future contribution.
- Your own constraints: Match the decision to your investment horizon, portfolio concentration, and ability to tolerate volatility. Waiting may provide a different valuation, but it also risks missing further gains; buying now exposes you to the current price and business risks.
Until those comparisons are made with reliable market data, the most supportable conclusion is conditional: Cognex’s reported operating momentum is strong, but it does not by itself establish whether now is a good time to buy.
