A blank CodeIgniter page is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start with the CodeIgniter, PHP, and web-server logs to uncover the error hidden behind the empty response. Then narrow it down by checking whether it affects every route, whether it began after deployment, and which CodeIgniter version you run. Keep detailed errors off public production pages.
Start by narrowing down where the failure occurs
Before changing settings or code, note what you can observe. These clues help direct the investigation; none proves the cause by itself.

- Scope: Is every route blank, or only one page, controller, or view?
- Timing: Did the problem begin after a deployment, configuration change, or code update?
- Environment: Does the same project work locally but fail on the server?
- Response: What HTTP status does the blank page return? Check the browser’s developer tools or use your usual HTTP client.
Record the route, time of the failure, status code, recent changes, and framework version. You will need these details when matching a request to a log entry.
Check logs before guessing at a fix
A production error handler may suppress the detailed report shown to a developer, even when an error has occurred. CodeIgniter 4’s default daily application logs are in writable/logs, though the configured logger can change their location. Check the PHP error log and the hosting or web-server error log as well; the failure may occur before CodeIgniter can record it. See the official CodeIgniter 4 debugging guide and PHP’s runtime configuration reference.
#1 Best Overall
- Reproduce the blank page and note the exact time and route.
- Inspect the CodeIgniter application log for an entry at that time.
- Check PHP and web-server or hosting error logs for related errors, such as startup, permission, or request failures.
- Use the full exception message and stack trace, if available, to identify the failing file, line, or configuration.
CodeIgniter documents that disabling error reporting does not stop logs from being written when errors occur. Hiding a report from visitors is not the same as fixing the failure or disabling logging. See CodeIgniter 4 error handling.
Use visible error reports only in a controlled development environment
If you can reproduce the issue locally or on access-controlled staging, use the development diagnostics for your installed CodeIgniter version and reproduce the same request. For CodeIgniter 4, the environment is controlled by CI_ENVIRONMENT; its official Running Your App guide explains the setup. PHP recommends E_ALL during development so issues are reported; see PHP’s error basics.
Do not expose detailed errors on a public production site. Reports can reveal sensitive information, including credentials or paths. PHP’s error security guidance explains this risk. If the problem happens only in production, keep public output suppressed and use protected logs, a staging reproduction, or other access-controlled diagnostics instead. Also, PHP notes that changing display_errors at runtime may not help when a fatal error occurs before that setting can take effect.
If the blank page began after deployment, compare the server setup
A project that works locally but fails after deployment calls for a careful comparison of runtime and filesystem assumptions. CodeIgniter’s troubleshooting guide highlights several areas to inspect:
Rank #3
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Environment configuration: Confirm the deployed environment is configured as intended and that the server is loading the expected settings.
- PHP and server configuration: Check the PHP setup, web-server configuration, document root, and corresponding error logs.
- Filename and class capitalization: Verify exact case in filenames, class names, and references. A server filesystem may be case-sensitive even if the development machine’s filesystem is not.
- Routing and rewrites: If a route works only when
index.phpappears in the URL, inspect the rewrite rules and whether Apache’smod_rewriteis enabled. If routing behaves unexpectedly, check the URI protocol configuration.
Compare the deployed files and settings with a working environment rather than changing multiple variables at once. That makes it easier to identify which difference matters.
Separate an application problem from a server-routing problem
For CodeIgniter 4, the troubleshooting guide recommends a basic installation check from the project root:
Rank #4
- Run
php spark serve. - Open
localhost:8080in a browser and check whether the welcome page appears.
If the local check succeeds, it shows that this basic app startup path works; it does not confirm that the production document root, rewrite rules, PHP setup, or server permissions are correct. If local startup also fails, use the resulting error and application logs to investigate the application or runtime.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use instructions for your CodeIgniter version
Do not apply CodeIgniter 4 environment instructions to a CodeIgniter 3 project. Their error-handling configuration differs.
| Version | Relevant diagnostic guidance |
|---|---|
| CodeIgniter 4 | Use the matching environment and error-handling guidance in the official Error Handling and Running Your App documentation. |
| CodeIgniter 3 | The official Error Handling guide documents its error reporting and logging conventions, including placing error_reporting() at the top of the main index.php. |
Confirm the installed major version before changing configuration. The exact repair depends on the error message, HTTP response, PHP setup, route, and server configuration; a blank screen alone cannot identify it.
