In flash-memory research, code-word sharing is an optimization that lets consecutive generations of a voltage-based write-once-memory code (WOM-v) share one boundary code-word. That shared word represents the same data sequence in both generations, allowing the code to use voltage levels more efficiently and fit more write generations before erasure.
What code-word sharing means
A WOM-v code maps data bits to voltage levels in flash memory. A generation is a set of code-words that can represent every possible data sequence during one stage of writing. Because a flash cell’s voltage can only increase or remain unchanged between erasures, the coding scheme must arrange its code-words around that constraint.

With code-word sharing, two consecutive generations overlap at one code-word. At that boundary, the same code-word represents the same data sequence in either generation. The overlap avoids leaving a gap between generations and makes more efficient use of the available voltage range. The technical definition is described in the USENIX HotStorage 2020 paper and in a later USENIX FAST ’22 paper.

How the WOM-v(2,4) example works
The HotStorage 2020 paper illustrates the idea with WOM-v(2,4): a scheme that maps 2 data bits across 4 voltage levels. Its 16 available levels are numbered 0 through 15.

| Arrangement | Voltage ranges | Generations |
|---|---|---|
| Disjoint generations | 0–3, 4–7, 8–11, 12–15 | 4 |
| Shared code-words | 0–3, 3–6, 6–9, 9–12, 12–15 | 5 |
The shared boundary levels are 3, 6, 9, and 12. Each belongs to the ranges on either side of a generation boundary, so the design fits five generations into the same 16-level range rather than four. These are coding-scheme generation counts reported in the paper, not measured write-lifespan results for a retail SSD.
Why the shared word must represent the same data
Sharing a voltage level alone is not enough. The boundary code-word has to encode the same data sequence in both adjacent generations; otherwise, moving into the next generation could change the meaning of what the cell stores. A University of Toronto thesis gives a concrete example: code-word 0011 represents data sequence 11 in both generation 1 and generation 2 of WOM-v(2,4).

Other reported generation counts
The HotStorage 2020 paper also reports maximum generation counts for three schemes:

For WOM-v(1,4), the paper compares 15 generations with overlapping states against 8 disjoint generations. These figures describe the paper’s coding designs; they do not establish a particular SSD’s implementation or lifespan.

What the term does—and does not—say about an SSD
Code-word sharing is a coding technique studied for flash memory, not a consumer SSD feature established by these sources. The reported generation counts show how a design can fit additional logical writes before erasure under its coding model. They do not demonstrate that a named drive uses the method or quantify a real-world lifespan gain.

Outside flash-memory research, “sharing a code word” can mean privately agreeing on a word or phrase with trusted people so it can help check the identity of someone making an unexpected urgent call. This is a separate use of the phrase, covered in guidance from Making Sense of Security. A shared phrase is only a check; it should not replace independently calling the person back using a number you already know.
