Cobblemon Eternal is a NeoForge modpack for Minecraft 1.21.1. The server and all connecting clients must use the same Cobblemon Eternal version. A client on a different release, Minecraft version, or NeoForge build can fail with a wrong-version, missing-mod, or registry-mismatch error even when the server itself starts normally.

Choose your hosting method
Run the server at home
Self-hosting avoids a monthly provider charge and gives you direct control over files, settings, and backups. You are also responsible for keeping the computer online, forwarding the server port through your router, allowing the connection through the operating-system firewall, applying updates, diagnosing crashes, and protecting your world data. A home connection must be reachable by the players you invite; a server that works only on your local network is not yet ready for friends connecting over the internet.
Use a managed Minecraft host
A managed host supplies an online machine, storage, a control panel, and usually tools for installing modpacks and creating backups. You trade the hardware and networking work for a recurring bill and less direct control over the host system. Before ordering, confirm all of the following for the specific plan:
- Java 21 support and a way to select it for the server process.
- An installation method that accepts the complete Cobblemon Eternal server pack, rather than only individual mods.
- At least 5 GB of memory dedicated to the instance, with headroom for the operating system and other services.
- Enough storage for the world, dimensions, logs, backups, and future pack updates.
- Control-panel access to server properties, view distance, simulation distance, console logs, and restart controls.
- Automated or downloadable backups and a clear restore procedure.
- Support that understands NeoForge and modded Minecraft, plus the renewal price after any introductory offer.

Prepare the server computer
Use a clean, dedicated directory
Create an empty folder solely for this server. Do not extract the pack over an older installation: leftover mods or configuration files can create conflicts that are difficult to identify. Make sure the account running the server can read and write the directory, and leave enough disk space for the initial world plus backups.
Install and verify Java 21
Install Java SE 21 on the machine that will run the server. Open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -versionThe output must identify Java 21. If it reports an older version, install or select Java 21 before starting the pack. If the command reports Java 21 but the startup script still fails, inspect the script or service configuration: it may reference a different Java executable than the one on your shell’s PATH. Verify the Java version of the actual server process, not only an unrelated terminal session.

Plan memory realistically
Allocate at least 5 GB of dedicated RAM, the amount specified by the Cobblemon Eternal maintainers for smooth play. Dedicated does not mean the computer must contain only 5 GB; the operating system and any other applications need memory as well. On a small home machine, close unnecessary programs and avoid assigning nearly all physical RAM to Java. Begin with the required minimum, then watch log messages, garbage-collection pauses, and in-game responsiveness as player count and explored terrain increase. Increase the allocation only when monitoring shows that memory is the limiting factor.
Install Cobblemon Eternal from the server pack
- Select one release. Decide which Cobblemon Eternal file your players will install. For the current listing, that is Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge, release 1.0.1. Record the release number so nobody accidentally installs a different profile.
- Download the matching server pack. In the project’s CurseForge files, choose the server-pack ZIP for that same release. Do not substitute a client download or a ZIP from another version.
- Extract the complete archive. Unzip every file into the empty server directory. Keep the supplied configuration files, scripts, libraries, and administrative files together with
mods. Copying onlymods/is a common cause of missing quests, recipes, and other pack content. - Select Java 21 for startup. Configure the supplied startup file or your hosting panel to use Java SE 21. Do not replace the pack’s startup setup with a different loader or a launcher intended for another Minecraft version.
- Set memory. Use the pack’s supplied startup settings or the host’s memory control to provide at least 5 GB dedicated RAM. Preserve other arguments unless you understand the change they make.
- Start the server once. Run the supplied startup script, or press the host’s start control. The first launch may create folders and files and can take longer than later starts.
- Accept the EULA only if you agree. If startup stops after creating
eula.txt, open that file, read the Minecraft EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept its terms. Start the server again. - Wait for completion. Let world generation and mod initialization finish. A process that is still writing files is not ready for players.
- Inspect the log. Open
logs/latest.logand look for fatal errors, missing dependencies, Java-version messages, or repeated exceptions. Resolve startup errors before inviting players. - Test locally. Connect from the same machine or local network first. Confirm that Cobblemon content, quests, recipes, and player data load before exposing the server to the internet.
Make a home server reachable by friends
Local testing proves that the software works; it does not prove that an outside player can reach it. For a private home server, complete these steps in your router and operating-system firewall:
- Give the server computer a consistent local address, preferably with a DHCP reservation, so a router rule does not point to a different machine after a reboot.
- Check the listening-port value in the server’s properties and forward that port from the router to the server computer. Use the protocol and port shown by the server configuration rather than guessing a value.
- Create an inbound firewall rule that permits the server process on the selected network profile. Keep the rule limited to the required port and Java executable where your firewall allows that level of control.
- Restart or reload the server after changing its network settings, then test from a connection outside your home network. A test from the same Wi-Fi may succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
- Give friends the public address and port they need, and keep that information private. If your public address changes, update the address you distribute or use a service you trust for a stable name.
If forwarding appears correct but outside connections still fail, check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, blocks inbound connections, or places the router behind another router. In those cases, a managed host or another reachable network may be simpler than trying to expose a home connection.

Basic private-server safety
- Give operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Use a whitelist when the world is intended for a known group.
- Do not run the server as an operating-system administrator or expose unrelated services on the same machine.
- Keep the operating system, Java installation, and pack files updated from trusted project downloads.
- Back up before granting new permissions, installing additions, or changing world-generation settings.
Make sure every player has the right client
Each player should install the same Cobblemon Eternal release, Minecraft 1.21.1, and a compatible NeoForge profile. The server’s version number is not enough if the client has a different loader build or an incomplete profile. Ask players to remove a mismatched profile and re-create it from the project’s current client files rather than manually copying selected mods.
Have one player connect before sending the address to everyone. This exposes version and networking problems while the group is still small. If the first connection succeeds but another player receives a missing-mod message, compare that player’s installed pack version and NeoForge environment with the working profile instead of changing the server at random.

What to back up
Stop the server cleanly before copying files. Back up the entire server directory, including the world, dimensions, player data, configuration files, scripts, permissions, and administrative files. A world-only copy cannot restore pack configuration or player-related settings after a failed update.
Keep more than one dated backup and store at least one copy on another disk or machine. Periodically test a restore in a separate directory; a backup that has never been opened is only an assumption.
How to update safely
- Announce downtime and stop the server normally.
- Create and verify a full backup of the current directory.
- Record the existing Cobblemon Eternal release and NeoForge version.
- Download the new matching server-pack ZIP and extract it into a new, empty directory.
- Compare the new pack’s startup and configuration files with the old installation; do not blindly carry old files into a release that changed them.
- Restore world and player data only when the new release supports that migration. Keep the untouched backup so you can roll back.
- Start the updated server with Java 21, watch
logs/latest.log, and test with one client using the same new release. - Only after the test succeeds, distribute the new client profile to the rest of the group.
Never update while the server is running. A live copy can capture partially written region or player files and make recovery harder.
Troubleshoot the most common failures

Improve performance without breaking the pack
Start with the project’s required baseline rather than adding optimization mods at random. Confirm Java 21, provide at least 5 GB dedicated RAM, and read the latest log for warnings. Then change one variable at a time:
- Reduce simulation distance if server-side entity and redstone processing is heavy.
- Reduce view distance if chunk transmission and world generation saturate the machine or connection.
- Disable shaders on clients that experience frame-rate or rendering problems.
- Limit simultaneous exploration during the first world-generation pass if the machine struggles to keep up.
- Watch memory, CPU, disk activity, and the log while reproducing the problem with a known number of players.
Do not use a larger memory allocation as a universal fix. Excessive allocation can leave too little RAM for the operating system, while a configuration mismatch will not be repaired by adding memory.
Is there an official Cobblemon server?
No. Cobblemon’s official server page states that Cobblemon does not have any official servers and instead lists community-run servers. If you want a public world, use that directory and check each listing’s platform, language, modpack requirements, and access rules. A community listing is separate from hosting your own Cobblemon Eternal instance.
For a private world with friends, use the Eternal server pack described here, then choose between home infrastructure and a verified managed host. Neither choice changes the requirement that every player run the same pack and loader versions.
