If a Cloudinary URL2PNG screenshot request is slow or times out, first identify the exact request that is failing. A URL2PNG capture/delivery request, your application’s request to its own server, and a later Cloudinary SDK upload are separate operations with different failure clues and timeout controls. Inspect the request’s status, response body, duration, and X-Cld-Error header before changing settings.
First determine which part of the screenshot workflow is timing out
Cloudinary URL2PNG generates a screenshot of a public website and delivers it through Cloudinary’s transformation and delivery pipeline. The browser may show a failed image or spinner even when the actual failure is elsewhere in the workflow. Separate these stages before troubleshooting:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- URL2PNG capture or delivery: the request to a Cloudinary URL using the
url2pngdelivery type. - Your application: a server action or API route that requests or handles the screenshot.
- Cloudinary SDK upload: a separate request that uploads a generated screenshot into Cloudinary storage.
A timeout setting for an SDK upload does not establish or change a universal URL2PNG renderer timeout. Cloudinary’s Upload API documents an SDK timeout option for how long the client waits for a Cloudinary response; use it only if that SDK request is the one that fails. Cloudinary Upload API reference
Capture evidence from the failing request
Use the browser Network panel
- Open your browser’s developer tools and select Network.
- Reproduce the issue and select the request that remains pending or fails.
- Record its full request URL, elapsed time, HTTP status, response body, and response headers. Note the timestamp and whether the failure repeats.
- If the request is a Cloudinary transformation URL, inspect
X-Cld-Error. Cloudinary recommends this header and the Network panel for diagnosing transformation URL problems. Cloudinary transformation troubleshooting
The request details help distinguish a genuinely slow capture from an invalid URL, an access restriction, an application-side failure, or a downstream upload problem. Preserve the exact URL and options when escalating; avoid posting credentials or signed URLs publicly.

Verify URL2PNG access and request construction
Cloudinary’s URL2PNG add-on must be registered for the account. Its documentation describes generating a screenshot using the url2png delivery type and a public website URL. By default, requests using the add-on must be signed or eagerly generated. An account can permit unsigned add-on transformations in the Console security settings. Cloudinary URL2PNG Website Screenshots
- Confirm the add-on is registered and that the request uses the expected delivery type.
- Check whether the transformation must be signed for your account’s security settings, or whether it was eagerly generated.
- Encode the target URL and any embedded query string correctly. Malformed transformation syntax and unsupported or conflicting parameters can cause errors.
- Use the status, response body, and
X-Cld-Errorto diagnose the actual failure rather than repeatedly changing parameters.
Check the target page and URL2PNG capture options
URL2PNG documents viewport, user-agent, full-page, and delay options. The documented delay is an additional fixed wait after the document is ready and assets have loaded; it may be useful for cases such as animations. It is a capture control, not a guaranteed remedy for an API-side timeout. Cloudinary URL2PNG options

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Compare the affected target with a simpler public page and note what differs. A page that relies on client-side rendering, late-loading resources, animations, or unusually heavy content may behave differently during capture. Record the target URL, selected capture options, timestamp, and whether the same request fails consistently. The available Cloudinary documentation does not establish a single timeout threshold for all URL2PNG captures or a setting that fixes every slow target.

If the failing request is a Cloudinary SDK upload of an already generated screenshot, the Upload API’s SDK-only timeout option controls how long that client waits for a Cloudinary response before terminating the connection. If the screenshot has already been generated and the problem is that the delivered image is slow to load, that is a separate optimization task. Cloudinary recommends automatic quality and format selection with q_auto and f_auto, and sizing images to their actual display dimensions to reduce transfer size. These delivery optimizations do not diagnose why capture itself took too long. Cloudinary image optimization

Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing the URL2PNG delay fix a timeout?
Not necessarily. The documented delay adds time after document readiness and asset loading; it is not a universal renderer-timeout fix.
Does Cloudinary publish one URL2PNG timeout limit that applies to every capture?
The cited URL2PNG documentation does not establish a universal capture-time limit. Diagnose the specific request and its response.
