A [email protected] address on your own domain is a custom alias. Cloudflare Email Routing can forward it to an inbox you have already verified, or send it to a Worker for custom processing. It does not create a Cloudflare support desk, and it is separate from Cloudflare’s own customer support. Setup takes a few minutes in the dashboard, but three limits decide how far the setup can scale: 200 routing rules per domain, 200 destination addresses per account, and a 25 MiB maximum for each inbound message.
Set up the support alias step by step
Before you start, the domain must use Cloudflare DNS. Cloudflare’s setup documentation states the requirement directly: “You must be using Cloudflare DNS to use Email Service.”

- In the Cloudflare dashboard, go to Compute > Email Service > Email Routing and select Onboard Domain.
- Choose the domain and review the DNS records Cloudflare will add: MX records for inbound routing, plus SPF and DKIM records. Confirm the changes.
- Open Destination Addresses and add the inbox that should receive support messages. Cloudflare sends a verification email to that address. Open it and complete verification. An unverified destination cannot be used in a rule.
- Return to Email Routing, select the domain, and open Routing Rules. Create a rule with
supportas the custom address (the local part), choose Send to an email, and select the verified destination. If you need custom message handling, the rule can instead route to a Worker. - Save the rule. Then send a test message from a different email account, not from the destination inbox itself, and check both the destination inbox and its spam folder.
DNS propagation timing
Cloudflare says DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate globally, but usually complete in 5 to 15 minutes for domains that use Cloudflare DNS. These are Cloudflare’s published estimates, not a guarantee for any particular domain, so allow time before assuming a failure.
Common setup problems
- The test message never arrives: confirm the destination address shows as verified, then check that the rule is saved and enabled for the correct domain.
- The message lands in spam: check the destination inbox’s spam folder and mark it as not spam. Repeated failures should be checked against the SPF and DKIM records Cloudflare added.
- The routing option is missing: the domain may not yet be onboarded to Email Routing, or it may not use Cloudflare DNS.
The three limits that matter for a support address
Cloudflare’s published Email Routing limits, listed for 2026, are shown below. Each applies at the scope stated in the table.

A fourth figure affects how many domains you can use with Email Routing: Cloudflare caps the combined total of Email Routing and Email Sending domains at 30 per zone, and that count includes the apex domain.
What the 200-rule limit means in practice
A single support@ alias uses one rule. The 200-rule cap matters only if you run many aliases, such as separate addresses for billing, sales, and abuse, on one domain. A small team with one support address will not approach it.

What the 25 MiB limit means in practice
Because oversized messages are rejected, customers who attach large files may get a bounce. If your support workflow regularly involves large attachments, tell customers to share files by link.

Email Routing is available on both the Workers Free and Workers Paid plans. Cloudflare lists inbound routing as unlimited. The cost to watch is compute: when a Worker handles incoming messages, it consumes Workers CPU and memory. A simple forwarding rule does not need a Worker, but a complex handler that parses or filters messages may exceed the Free plan’s limits.

Where to get help from Cloudflare
Keep two questions separate: a problem with your own support alias, and a question for Cloudflare itself. The alias is configured in your domain, so its problems are handled through your Email Routing settings. For problems with Cloudflare’s products, use the channels below.

- Raising a limit: Cloudflare’s Email Service FAQ directs requests to support or to the Cloudflare Developers Discord.
- Reporting abuse or spam: send reports to
[email protected]. Include full email headers, a description of the issue, and relevant account information. This abuse address is not the general technical support contact.
Forwarding is not a mailbox
Email Routing only forwards inbound messages. Cloudflare states that a customer who needs to send and receive email from a domain needs an SMTP provider. If your support team must reply from [email protected] as a full mailbox, Email Routing alone does not supply that. Use a separate email hosting or SMTP service for outbound sending, and use Email Routing for the inbound alias.
