Those are different jobs. If you want to preserve Twitch VODs, enable Past Broadcast storage before streaming and move recordings to a local drive or another platform before Twitch’s retention window expires. If you want uploaded videos to run as a 24/7 YouTube stream, that is a broadcast service—not an archival backup.
What cloud video storage means for a streamer
A livestream replay is convenient, but it is not necessarily a permanent archive. Platforms may require a setting to be enabled, limit how long replays remain available, or separate ordinary past broadcasts from saved highlights and uploads.

A general cloud archive stores files for later retrieval. A continuous-streaming service instead accepts uploaded video or playlists and broadcasts them repeatedly. The second option can keep a channel live, but it does not replace a dependable archive of the original recordings.

How long does Twitch keep VODs?
Twitch’s On-Demand Content help page, accessed in 2026, lists these retention periods for past broadcasts. They are Twitch policy windows, not universal storage limits, and should be checked on Twitch’s current help page because policies can change.

The same page notes additional seven-day expiration details for certain vertical or 2K versions. Check the specific VOD and Twitch’s current policy rather than assuming every version remains available for the full category window. Ordinary past broadcasts also have a different storage category from Highlights and Uploads: Twitch describes a combined 100-hour limit for Highlights and Uploads, and says ordinary past broadcasts do not count toward that limit. Enable VOD storage before going live
Twitch past broadcasts are not saved unless Past Broadcast storage is enabled in stream settings. A configuration or network problem may also prevent a VOD from saving, so do not treat the replay as your only copy when a recording matters.

- Before streaming: open Twitch’s stream settings and enable the Past Broadcast storage option.
- Check the account category: use the retention window that applies to your Twitch account when deciding how soon to export or download.
- After the stream: confirm that the VOD appears in your video list and plays before relying on it as a saved copy.
- Move important recordings promptly: download or export before the applicable window ends.
How to save streams after they expire from Twitch’s replay window
Twitch documents two ways to keep a VOD beyond its platform retention period: download it for local storage, or connect Twitch to YouTube and export it there. Twitch’s wording is: “You can download your VODs to store them locally, or you can connect your Twitch account to YouTube to export and save your VODs directly to your YouTube account.” Both routes need to be used while the VOD is still available.
Download a local copy
A downloaded file gives you a copy outside Twitch’s replay window. You can keep it on a computer or an external hard drive, depending on your storage plan. There is no universal drive capacity recommendation: file size depends on recording resolution, bitrate, duration, and how many streams you want to retain. Estimate from your actual VOD sizes and intended retention period.

For important recordings, verify that the downloaded file opens and plays before deleting or losing access to the Twitch copy. A local drive is a practical destination, but a single drive is not redundancy; consider keeping another copy if losing the recording would matter.
Export to YouTube
Twitch also supports connecting your account to YouTube and exporting VODs there. This keeps a hosted copy associated with another platform account, rather than giving you a file you control locally. Confirm that the export completed and that the resulting video is accessible before counting it as your preserved copy.

Choosing a preservation approach
- Use Twitch replay for short-term access: it is convenient when its current retention period is enough and Past Broadcast storage is enabled.
- Download locally when file control matters: a local copy does not depend on Twitch continuing to host that replay, but you must provide enough space and manage the file.
- Export to YouTube when hosted access is useful: this avoids managing a local file as the only copy, but access still depends on your account and the destination platform.
- Use an archive service for a larger library only after checking its terms: compare capacity, cost, retrieval charges, redundancy, privacy, and account lifecycle or deletion rules. Service terms and availability can affect whether an archive is suitable.
Whichever route you choose, do not wait until the final day of the replay window. Transfers take time, and a copy should be checked before the original disappears.

Archival storage is not the same as a 24/7 stream

Common preservation problems and fixes
- No VOD appears: confirm Past Broadcast storage was enabled before going live, then check whether a configuration or network problem interfered with saving.
- The VOD disappeared: the applicable Twitch retention window may have elapsed. A download or export must happen before expiry; Twitch cannot serve as a permanent archive for these replays.
- A downloaded file is missing or unusable: verify that the download completed and that the file plays while the Twitch VOD is still available.
