Use it when cloud-managed processing, adaptive-bitrate outputs, and integration with cloud packaging and delivery suit your workflow. Encoding near the source may be a better fit when you need direct physical camera or router connections, tightly managed local networks, or must limit the bandwidth sent to the cloud.
What cloud transcoding means
Encoding compresses video so it can be transmitted and played using less data while retaining as much picture quality as possible. Transcoding creates one or more encoded versions from a source. In a live workflow, the processing has to keep pace with the incoming video: AWS describes real-time encoding as producing one second of video for each second of operation. If processing falls behind, the stream can be interrupted.

Cloud transcoding means this live processing happens on cloud infrastructure rather than entirely on equipment at the production site. It is one stage of a streaming system, not a complete delivery system by itself. You still need to get the source feed to the service, package the outputs for playback, distribute them, and provide a player.

- Capture and produce: Cameras and production equipment create the live source feed.
- Contribute the feed: An encoder or service input sends that feed to the cloud over a supported protocol. Where the source uses a physical interface such as SDI, local encoding may be needed before contribution.
- Transcode: The cloud service processes the incoming video and creates compressed outputs. It may produce an adaptive-bitrate (ABR) ladder: multiple versions at different resolutions or bitrates.
- Package: A packager prepares outputs in formats supported by target players and devices.
- Deliver and play: A content delivery network (CDN) distributes the stream, and a player selects a suitable rendition based on device and network conditions.
AWS documents one example using MediaLive to ingest and transcode a feed into ABR HLS streams, MediaPackage to package outputs as HLS, DASH, or CMAF, and CloudFront to distribute the stream. These are roles in that AWS example, not requirements that every streaming system use those products. See AWS Guidance for Live Streaming.

Why create multiple renditions?
A single high-bitrate stream may work well for some viewers but stall on slower connections or be unsuitable for a device with different playback capabilities. ABR output gives the player several versions to choose from, allowing delivered quality to adapt to available bandwidth. The ladder must be designed for the target devices, frame rates, codecs, and service limits; extra renditions also mean more processing work.
When cloud processing is a good fit
Consider cloud transcoding when you want to provision processing through a cloud service, create multiple output renditions, or connect encoding with cloud-based packaging and distribution. It can also suit teams already operating monitoring and delivery systems in a cloud environment. AWS describes MediaLive as a cloud-based, real-time video processing service with automated provisioning and pay-as-you-use operation; actual capabilities and costs depend on service configuration and usage. See AWS Elemental MediaLive.

When encoding on premises—or using a hybrid pipeline—makes sense
Local encoding can be preferable when cameras or routers provide physical interfaces that are not directly available to a cloud service, when delivery takes place on a managed local network, or when available bandwidth makes sending an uncompressed or high-bitrate source impractical. AWS cites SDI camera feeds encoded locally before their contribution to cloud processing or distribution as one such pattern. See AWS Elemental Live FAQs.

A hybrid design is often practical: encode close to a physical source, send a suitable contribution stream to the cloud, and use cloud services for downstream transcoding, packaging, or distribution. The right division depends on where the source is easiest to handle and what the network can sustain. AWS presents its comparison of cloud and on-premises processing as vendor guidance, not a guarantee that one approach has identical results in every workflow.

How to choose between cloud and on-premises processing
Compare the whole workflow rather than the encoder alone. Define the source, contribution path, required outputs, target players, and operational constraints before choosing where transcoding should run.
| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Source and interfaces | Are the cameras network-based, or do they use SDI or other physical connections that need local handling? |
| Contribution network | Can the connection from the source to the cloud sustain the required bitrate reliably? Is the network managed locally? |
| Protocol compatibility | Do the source encoder and cloud input support the same contribution protocol and configuration? |
| Outputs and playback | Which codecs, resolutions, frame rates, packaging formats, and ABR ladder steps do the target devices require? |
| Latency and resilience | What end-to-end latency is acceptable, and how will redundancy, monitoring, and failover be designed? Do not assume a latency figure without validating the specific workflow. |
| Cost and operations | Compare cloud service usage with the full cost of local equipment, maintenance, power, staffing, networking, packaging, and delivery. Cloud is not automatically cheaper. |
| Team and ecosystem | Which environment best fits your team’s existing skills, monitoring practices, and preferred cloud services? |

Contribution protocols and bitrate planning
The contribution protocol and bitrate must fit the source encoder, network, and receiving service. For its Live Stream API, Google Cloud prefers SRT over RTMP and cites features including packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, support for multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth. Google says most professional-grade encoders support SRT. This is guidance for that API, not a universal rule for every live-streaming workflow. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best practices, last updated September 24, 2026 UTC.

| Use | Video setting | Google Cloud recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 source input | 720p at 25 or 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 source input | 1080p at 50 or 60 fps | 20 Mbps |
| H.264 source input | 2160p at 50 or 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
| H.264 output rendition | 720p at 25 or 30 fps | 3,300 Kbps |
| H.264 output rendition | 1080p at 25 or 30 fps | 6,000 Kbps |
Google notes that higher frame rates need to be accounted for and that adding more output ladder steps requires more computing power. Treat input and output figures as separate parts of the configuration: a recommended source bitrate is not the same thing as a rendition bitrate.
Costs, latency, and reliability: what to validate
Cloud services can avoid an upfront purchase of local encoding infrastructure and may automate provisioning, but usage charges depend on the selected configuration and how much the service runs. Compare the total workflow cost, including contribution, transcoding, packaging, delivery, monitoring, and operations, against the total cost of owning and running local equipment. The sources cited here do not establish a universal cost advantage or a latency figure for all workloads.
Likewise, choosing cloud or on-premises processing alone does not define reliability. Set targets for continuity and recovery, then design and test the relevant network paths, monitoring, redundancy, and failover. Confirm that the cloud input accepts your chosen protocol and settings, and that the required output formats and ladder are supported by the services in your deployment.
A separate use case: keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube
Cloud transcoding is usually discussed as processing a live camera or production feed. A different need is keeping uploaded videos running as a continuous YouTube live stream. StreamNeo is a cloud service for that YouTube-only use case: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it is not a camera livestreaming service. Its service is separate from the AWS and Google Cloud transcoding workflows described above.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay running at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account). Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
Quick Recap
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
