Cloud Security Findings: Which Risks Should You Fix First?

Severity, CVSS, attack exposure, and business risk are different signals. Find out what your cloud security tool’s ranking means and how to triage findings.

If your cloud security tool puts an unexpected finding at the top, first identify what its ranking number measures. Severity, CVSS, attack exposure, compliance posture, and organization-specific risk are different signals—not interchangeable rankings. Use the score as a starting point, then check reachability, exploitation, asset importance, data sensitivity, business impact, and score freshness.

Why a finding’s top-ranked number may not mean “fix this first”

A severity label or vulnerability score describes only what its underlying model measures. It may say little about whether an attacker can reach the affected resource, whether that resource matters to your organization, or whether exploitation is known. Google Cloud, Microsoft, and AWS each document contextual information that affects how their products assess findings; their documentation describes product behavior, not which vendor’s scores are universally most accurate.

  • Does the number represent vulnerability severity, exploitation likelihood, attack exposure, compliance status, or business risk?
  • Which resources, finding types, cloud services, identities, and attack origins are included or excluded?
  • Does the model account for internet exposure, attack paths, sensitive data, or business-critical assets? Must someone designate important resources?
  • When was the score last calculated, and when do asset or finding changes affect the queue?
  • Can an analyst see why the finding was ranked there and what remediation would change the risk?

What contextual ranking looks like in cloud tools

The products below illustrate different documented approaches; their scores should not be compared as though they shared a scale.

Product documentation Documented context Scope or qualification
Google Security Command Center Attack exposure scores use simulated attack paths from the public internet and designated high-value resources. Google also discusses exploitability and impact when prioritizing vulnerabilities. The model’s documented attack-path scope excludes internal actors. Users designate high-value resources; a zero score is only the latest simulation’s view within that model. Google Cloud: attack exposure scores; Google Cloud: prioritizing vulnerabilities.
Microsoft Defender for Cloud Recommendation risk can reflect resource configuration, network connections, security posture, internet exposure, data sensitivity, lateral movement, attack paths, and business impact. Microsoft says risk prioritization requires the Defender CSPM plan. Microsoft Learn: security recommendations; Microsoft Learn: risk prioritization.
Amazon Inspector AWS says its score correlates a CVSS base score with network reachability and exploitability data. This describes Inspector’s scoring approach, not an independent validation against other tools. AWS: understanding findings.

These approaches show why a lower-severity finding can appear above a higher-severity one: the tool may account for reachability or an attack path to an important resource. That ordering is meaningful only within the model’s stated inputs and coverage.

How to triage findings without blindly following the queue

  1. Keep deadlines visible. Applicable compliance obligations and response deadlines still matter; a risk rank does not cancel them. Google distinguishes reducing exposure from prioritizing findings that violate applicable standards.
  2. Check known exploitation. Treat confirmed exploitation as a distinct signal rather than assuming a severity score captures it. CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog is intended as an input to vulnerability prioritization; consult the current CISA KEV catalog for entries and guidance.
  3. Trace exposure and attack paths. Ask whether an attacker can reach the affected resource and whether the finding enables a path toward a high-value system. Check which attack origins and resource types the tool models.
  4. Apply business context. Consider asset criticality, sensitive data, and the likely impact of compromise. In Google’s model, confirm that the resources your organization considers high-value have been designated.
  5. Use technical severity and exploitability as additional signals. CVSS and exploitability help characterize a vulnerability, but they do not by themselves establish your organization’s remediation order.
  6. Verify freshness and assign an owner. Confirm the last calculation time, then make sure a responsible person can act on the finding. Record the reason for an exception or escalation and any deadline that overrides the score.

This is a practical synthesis of documented guidance, not a universal formula. Avoid assigning invented weights to the signals: the right order depends on your environment, obligations, and threat model.

Rank #2
FortiGate-60F Network Security Appliance Plus 1 Year FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection (UTP) and FortiCare Premium (FG-60F-BDL-950-12)
  • HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
  • UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
  • OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

When the number is a posture or compliance score

A posture score and a risk rank answer different questions. A posture or compliance score may indicate how many controls meet a benchmark; a risk ranking is intended to help identify issues that most expose important resources. Google’s documentation distinguishes prioritizing findings that violate a standard from prioritizing vulnerability exposure. Before comparing numbers, identify the decision each one is designed to support.

Why a score may be zero or missing

In Google Security Command Center, an absent attack exposure score can occur when a simulation is stale, the finding category is unsupported, or the resource was added after the latest simulation. Changes made after a simulation are reflected after the next one. A zero means the latest simulation did not identify a path within that model; it does not establish that the resource is free of risk from internal actors, zero-days, or third-party infrastructure. Check the model’s coverage and calculation time before using zero or a blank value to lower a finding’s priority.

Rank #3
GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Brume 3 Wired VPN Security Gateway NO Wi-Fi
  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.

  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

What to compare when evaluating prioritization tools

Do not treat two products’ numeric scores as directly comparable unless their definitions and scales establish that they are. Compare the documented capabilities instead:

  • Inputs: severity or CVSS, exploitability, known or predicted exploitation, reachability, asset value, sensitive data, and compliance state.
  • Attack context: whether paths are modeled, and which origins, identities, services, and resource classes are covered.
  • Asset context: how business criticality is represented and maintained, including whether users must designate high-value resources.
  • Freshness: how often scoring refreshes and how quickly changes affect the ordering.
  • Explainability: whether analysts can inspect the reason for a rank, affected resources, attack path, owner, and recommended remediation.
  • Coverage and plan requirements: supported cloud environments and finding types, plus any required plan or activation.

Google documents designated high-value resources and simulation scope; Microsoft identifies a Defender CSPM plan requirement for risk prioritization; AWS describes contextual inputs for Inspector scoring. Those differences help define what to ask—not which tool wins or whether its scores are independently accurate.
