Cloud Resume Challenge: Build a Cloud-Native Portfolio

Build a public resume site and demonstrate the cloud architecture, code, tests, and deployment automation behind it. Here is how the challenge’s AWS path works and what its other cloud editions mean.

The Cloud Resume Challenge turns a resume website into a practical cloud project: you publish a styled site, add a visitor counter, and demonstrate the cloud architecture, code, tests, and deployment automation behind it. The official challenge offers AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud paths. Its core steps are free, and completing them is a learning and portfolio exercise—not a promise of employment.

What you build

The project culminates in a public resume website and a short blog post describing what you learned. The site is only the visible part: the challenge asks you to build and explain the services and software that serve the site, track visits, and support repeatable deployments.

The stated aim is to help bridge cloud certification and cloud jobs. The official FAQ says beginners and working professionals alike can attempt it. That makes the result useful as evidence of hands-on work, but the challenge does not establish that finishing it will secure a job.

The AWS challenge, step by step

The AWS instructions list 16 steps. Their sequence moves from foundations to a working site, then to a backend, testing, infrastructure management, and deployment automation:

  1. Earn the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification.
  2. Build the resume page with HTML.
  3. Style it with CSS.
  4. Publish it as a static website.
  5. Enable HTTPS.
  6. Configure DNS for a custom domain.
  7. Add a JavaScript visitor counter.
  8. Store counter data in a database.
  9. Expose the backend through an API.
  10. Write backend logic in Python.
  11. Add tests.
  12. Manage infrastructure as code.
  13. Track the project in source control.
  14. Automate backend deployment with CI/CD.
  15. Automate frontend deployment with CI/CD.
  16. Write a blog post about the project.

These are the AWS path’s requirements and recommendations, not a universal list of cloud services for every edition. The official AWS instructions provide the full details.

How the AWS pieces fit together

The recommended implementation connects a static frontend to a small serverless backend. A visitor’s browser runs the resume site and counter interface; when it needs counter data, it calls an API. The API invokes backend code, which reads or updates the database. Infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD workflows make the underlying resources and deployments repeatable.

Project role AWS services or tools named in the instructions What they do in the project
Static site hosting Amazon S3 Stores and serves the resume site’s static files.
HTTPS delivery Amazon CloudFront Delivers the site over HTTPS.
Custom domain Route 53 or another DNS provider Routes the chosen domain to the site.
Visitor-count data Amazon DynamoDB Stores the counter’s data.
API and backend Amazon API Gateway and AWS Lambda Provide an API and run backend logic.
Backend language and AWS integration Python and boto3 Implement backend behavior and interact with AWS services.
Infrastructure as code AWS SAM; Terraform is also permitted Defines and manages cloud infrastructure as code.
Automated workflows GitHub Actions Supports automated backend and frontend deployment workflows.

The table describes the AWS guide’s suggested implementation. The challenge’s required outcomes are the steps themselves; the overview directs participants to separate provider-specific instructions for AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The challenge overview lists those paths.

Two important security boundaries

  • Do not connect browser JavaScript directly to DynamoDB. The AWS instructions call for an API between the frontend and the database. This keeps database access behind backend logic rather than exposing a direct database connection to every site visitor.
  • Do not commit AWS credentials to source control. The challenge explicitly warns against putting credentials in the repository. A public portfolio project should not publish secrets along with its code.

A working visitor counter demonstrates an end-to-end cloud workflow; by itself, it is not proof that the site or backend is production-ready, secure, or a comprehensive analytics system.

Choosing a cloud path

The official challenge has AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud editions. Choose the path that fits the platform you want to practice or the cloud environment relevant to your goals. The available official descriptions do not provide a complete side-by-side comparison of every edition’s services and tooling, so there is no evidence here to rank one as better.

For AWS, the guide names SAM for infrastructure as code and allows Terraform instead. Tooling and services for the other providers should be taken from their own instructions rather than inferred from the AWS path. The challenge repository also suggests optional extensions in areas such as security, networking, data engineering, observability, DevOps, Linux and containers, and cloud programming: official project extension ideas.

Cost, the optional guidebook, and community

The official overview describes the original 16 steps as free, and the FAQ says you can complete the challenge without buying the book. Cloud resources may have their own usage or account costs, so “free” describes the challenge steps, not a guarantee that every participant’s cloud usage will incur no charges. The AWS instructions point to the AWS edition of the Cloud Resume Challenge Guidebook as an optional resource for strategies and further challenges.

The official resources page describes editions for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud and says the guidebook includes extensions for cloud developer, DevOps, security, solutions architect, data engineer, and AI engineer paths. It also describes a Discord community for questions, code review, job postings, and discussion. The page reported “more than 12,000 cloud enthusiasts” when accessed in 2026; that is a time-sensitive count, not a dated historical total: official resources.

What to expect from the career connection

The challenge gives participants a concrete project to discuss alongside certification and other experience. Its official site includes an individual testimonial from Stephanie K, who describes moving from bank branch manager to Associate Cloud Engineer in three months and calls the challenge “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” That is one person’s account, not evidence of a typical result or a guarantee. Employers will still assess the project in the context of a candidate’s broader skills and experience.
