Cloud-Native Training and Certification From the Linux Foundation and CNCF

Find the right Linux Foundation and CNCF cloud-native certification path, from foundational Kubernetes knowledge to administration, application development, and security.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. The Linux Foundation offers courses and learning paths to help prepare for its cloud-native certifications, but the courses shown in sample paths are generally suggestions—not prerequisites. Choose a route by the work you want to do: KCNA for foundational knowledge, CKA for Kubernetes administration, CKAD for application development, or CKS for Kubernetes security. The CKA, CKAD, and CKS exams emphasize hands-on skills, so practical command-line and cluster work matters as much as study materials.

Choose a certification by role and experience

The Linux Foundation’s catalog includes Kubernetes credentials, other cloud-native project certifications, courses, subscriptions, and course-and-exam bundles. Not every listed credential is a CNCF Kubernetes certification, and no single course is required for every exam. Start with the role and level that match your goal.

Credential Best fit Eligibility and assessment notes
KCNA Foundational Kubernetes and cloud-native ecosystem knowledge Positioned as foundational; verify the current credential page for its exam format and requirements.
CKA Kubernetes administration A hands-on, command-line performance exam. The CNCF page describes a two-hour exam.
CKAD Building and deploying cloud-native applications No prerequisites are listed on the current exam page. It is an online, proctored, performance-based command-line exam with two hours to complete tasks.
CKS Securing Kubernetes platforms and container-based applications The sample curriculum identifies CKA as a prerequisite credential. Check the current CKS page for current eligibility rules.
KCSA and project credentials Security associate knowledge or a specific cloud-native project area The catalog also lists credentials associated with projects such as Argo, Istio, Prometheus, Cilium, and GitOps. Verify each credential’s current scope and exam format.

The Linux Foundation’s certification learning paths describe routes for exam preparation. The live catalog is the place to check which credentials, courses, and bundles are currently available.

What the exams test—and why practice matters

CKA and CKAD are practical command-line exams

The CKAD exam page describes an online, proctored, performance-based test: candidates solve tasks from a Kubernetes command line within two hours. The CNCF CKA page likewise describes a two-hour, online, performance-based command-line exam. These formats reward being able to perform tasks in a live environment; reading or watching lessons alone does not mirror the assessment.

Use the CKA domains to target study

The CNCF’s published CKA exam composition assigns the following weights. These are exam-domain percentages, not an industry survey, and should be checked on the current exam page before scheduling.

CKA domain Published weight
Cluster Architecture, Installation & Configuration 25%
Workloads & Scheduling 15%
Services & Networking 20%
Storage 10%
Troubleshooting 30%

The CKA page says quarterly exam updates are planned to track Kubernetes releases. Check its current version and policies, including retake terms, when you book.

CKAD simulator access

The CKAD exam page currently says enrollment includes two Killer.sh simulator attempts, with 36 hours of access after activation for each attempt. Treat this as a current offering rather than a permanent term; confirm the page before purchasing.

Courses are preparation options, not universal requirements

The catalog contains free and paid learning options, standalone exams, courses, and bundles. A suggested course sequence can provide structure, but it does not automatically define exam eligibility.

CKAD sample path

The Linux Foundation’s CKAD sample curriculum starts with free introductory courses, moves to intermediate training, and offers Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259) or Kubernetes Administration (LFD459) as possible preparation before the exam. It explicitly says the suggested courses are not required prerequisites. Its estimate is three to six months, depending on experience and the time spent on additional research, study, and practice; it is a sample estimate, not a guarantee.

CKS sample path

The CKS sample curriculum begins with two free introductory courses, identifies CKA as the prerequisite credential, and suggests Kubernetes Security Essentials (LFS260) or instructor-led Kubernetes Security Fundamentals (LFS460). It gives a three-to-six-month estimate depending on experience and says its courses are not required prerequisites. The PDF is dated 2023, so confirm both the current course availability and CKS eligibility rules before following that sequence.

Other course suggestions

The Linux Foundation’s candidate FAQ describes its free Introduction to Kubernetes course, Fundamentals of Kubernetes (LFS258) for CKA preparation, Kubernetes for Developers (LFS259) as aligned with CKAD domains, and Kubernetes Security Essentials (LFS260) for CKS preparation. Course names and availability can change; use the live catalog to confirm details.

How to build a preparation plan

  1. Pick the target credential. Match the intended work to the route: foundational ecosystem knowledge, administration, application development, or security. If you are considering CKS, account for the CKA prerequisite identified in its sample curriculum and verify the current eligibility rules.
  2. Check the current exam page. Confirm eligibility, format, duration, version, domains, price, retake policy, and any included practice access before you commit.
  3. Choose a learning format. Use free introductory courses, self-paced or instructor-led courses, or a bundle if it suits your budget and schedule. A course is one preparation option, not a substitute for hands-on work.
  4. Practice the tasks, not just the terminology. For CKA and CKAD, spend time using Kubernetes from the command line and practicing in a cluster environment. Use the published exam domains to prioritize study where a domain-weighted outline is available.
  5. Schedule when your practice is consistent. The sample path estimates are useful planning references, but experience and available study time vary. Base the date on your readiness to complete representative practical tasks, not on a fixed calendar promise.

Costs, bundles, and where to buy

The catalog includes standalone exams, courses, subscriptions, and course-plus-exam bundles, with both free and paid learning options. As a dated snapshot, the CNCF CKA page lists a $445 exam cost and one free retake; prices and policies can change and may vary by location, language, promotion, or later catalog updates. Confirm the live price and bundle contents in the Linux Foundation catalog and on the relevant exam page before purchase.

The Linux Foundation announced in November 2023 that select courses and certifications were available through AWS Marketplace, initially including CKA with Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258) and CKAD with Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259). This is a distribution option, not evidence that every bundle remains available there; check current Marketplace listings. The separate voucher redemption page is for existing customers who already have vouchers, not the ordinary purchase route.

Can a book prepare you for CKA or CKAD?

A Kubernetes community forum post links to Kubernetes: Preparing for the CKA and CKAD Certifications as a possible supplemental book. Its current edition, listing availability, and alignment with current exam versions are not established here, and the available source does not establish Linux Foundation or CNCF endorsement. Because CKA and CKAD assess practical command-line performance, a book should complement rather than replace hands-on practice.
