Use a provider-managed or cloud-to-cloud transfer when available; otherwise, download and upload through a computer if you have enough storage and bandwidth. Test a representative sample, check files and metadata at the destination, review errors, and keep the original copy until the people who rely on it confirm the move is complete.
Choose a transfer method that supports your cloud pair
There is no single transfer route that works for every cloud provider or account type. A service that advertises cloud migration may not support a particular personal account, shared folder, native document, or permission model. Verify the exact combination of source, destination, and content before starting.

| Method | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Provider-managed transfer | The provider explicitly supports your source and destination, especially for a large collection where managed retries and reporting are useful. | Supported endpoints, required permissions, metadata behavior, reports, and any performance commitments. Google says its Storage Transfer Service is optimized for transfers involving more than 1 TiB, validates data integrity, and retries transfers; Google also says it does not provide an SLA for transfer performance or latency. Google Cloud Storage Transfer Service overview. |
| Cloud-to-cloud transfer tool | Your provider pair is supported and you want to avoid staging the whole collection on a local computer. | Account access granted to the tool, its security and privacy terms, supported file types, limits, error reports, and treatment of sharing links, versions, and metadata. |
| Download, then upload | A smaller or simpler transfer, or a provider pair for which no suitable direct route is available. | Available local disk space, upload and download bandwidth, recovery after interruption, duplicate handling, sync behavior, and secure handling of local copies. |
| Organization migration service or specialist | A team move involving complex ownership, access rules, compliance, or a large shared collection. | Current provider support, administrator rights, audit and error reporting, data location, service terms, and a rehearsed pilot. |
Google Cloud’s Storage Transfer Service illustrates why endpoint checks matter: Google lists paths involving Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Cloud Storage, on-premises storage, publicly accessible URLs into Cloud Storage, and HDFS into Cloud Storage. Those documented paths describe that service; they do not mean every consumer cloud drive can transfer directly to every other one. Check Google’s supported transfer paths or consult the documentation for your own providers.

For that Google Cloud service, the overview describes HTTPS communication using TLS 1.3, integrity validation, automatic retries, and managed or self-hosted transfer options. These are Google’s service-specific descriptions, not a guarantee about other tools. Google also says performance and latency are not covered by an SLA.

Decide what must survive the move
A file’s contents are only one part of a cloud migration. Before choosing a method, decide which surrounding features matter to you and test those requirements specifically.
- Folder structure and file names
- Sharing permissions, owners, and external links
- Versions, comments, and timestamps
- Custom metadata and other provider-specific attributes
- Native editability and embedded or linked content
- Destination ownership, retention, and administrative controls
Metadata preservation depends on the source, destination, and transfer path. Google Cloud documents that some custom metadata is preserved on specified paths, while selected Cloud Storage bucket metadata or POSIX attributes can be preserved in particular circumstances. The same documentation lists exceptions, including Azure access-control and index-tag metadata, timestamps for certain paths, and Cloud Storage fields such as updated, etag, and componentCount. Google says metadata not explicitly documented is not preserved. Review the exact source-to-destination section rather than assuming a successful file copy preserves every attribute. Check native documents and provider controls
Files that remain editable in their original cloud service may not behave the same way elsewhere. Google says users can migrate Drive files to Box, Dropbox, or Egnyte and continue editing migrated Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, but warns that unsupported content within a file may not migrate. If the original is deleted, unsupported content could be unrecoverable from the migrated version.

Google also says Drive access controls, data-location commitments, DLP, Vault retention, and Drive API access are unavailable for Google documents stored with those providers. Prepare the collection and destination
- Inventory the source. Note top-level folders, approximate size, file count and types, shared folders, owners, important external links, and native documents. Flag large, restricted, frequently changing, or retention-sensitive files.
- Check account and administrator rules. For work or school accounts, ask whether the administrator permits the destination provider and any third-party transfer tool. Google notes that administrators control whether third-party storage providers can be used with managed accounts. Google Drive guidance.
- Confirm destination capacity and support. Verify available space, the exact supported provider pair, and whether the method accepts your account type, shared drives or team folders, and file types. Google Cloud advises checking whether a source-and-sink combination is supported. Google Cloud supported paths.
- Write down the must-keep requirements. Specify which content, names, structure, access, versions, comments, and metadata are essential. Start with the features that would be costly or impossible to recreate.
Run a pilot before moving everything
Transfer a small sample that includes ordinary files and the items most likely to reveal incompatibilities: a large file, shared content, a native document, an unusual filename, and a file with important metadata. Then check that:
- Expected folders and files appear at the destination.
- Representative files open and have the expected content.
- Native documents still work as intended, including any important links or embedded content.
- Access matches the intended audience and important sharing links work.
- The transfer report has no unexplained skipped or failed items.
A pilot is especially important when the source contains native documents or provider-specific metadata. A successful transfer of a small sample does not prove every item will migrate, but it can expose a poor fit before the whole collection is involved.

Run the full transfer and manage source changes
Choose a migration window and, where practical, ask users to stop editing the source during the final transfer. If people continue to make changes, the transfer may encounter files that differ from the versions it scanned.
Google says Storage Transfer Service does not lock source files during transfer. For non-Google cloud sources transferring to Google Cloud, an object changed during transfer fails and is not transferred. Other documented paths may retry and eventually log an error after repeated failures. If you use this service, check its reports and rerun failed items as needed; do not assume a completed job means every changing file was copied successfully. Google Cloud known limitations.

Verify the destination before removing the source
Use the migration reports and your inventory to check counts and identify skipped or failed files. Open representative high-value files, inspect critical folders, test important access and links, and confirm the destination owner and retention arrangements. Resolve unexplained gaps before changing workflows or telling users the move is complete.
Keep the source available until the intended users have confirmed that the destination works and any rollback period your organization requires has passed. This gives you a recovery route if a file, permission, or document feature did not transfer as expected.
Check current service status before planning a work migration
Product availability can change. Google’s current Workspace Migrate help page says the product for SharePoint Online and OneDrive is no longer receiving updates or bug fixes. It also says that, starting October 2026, Google Workspace Migrate for Exchange Online will no longer be available and points administrators to an advanced data import tool. Recheck the official status page before building a plan around that software. Google Workspace Migrate help and status.
