You can use one insert or layer different materials to adjust absorbency. An insert is not a complete diaper: it needs a diaper that holds it in place and, in a pocket system, a waterproof outer shell.
Prefolds are a separate option. Fold one inside a waterproof cover for a two-part diaper, or pad-fold one into a pocket if the diaper’s design allows it. Inserts and prefolds absorb; the cover or diaper shell provides the waterproof barrier.
What a cloth diaper insert does
An insert is removable absorbent material, commonly placed in the pocket of a pocket diaper. It catches urine and holds it until the diaper is changed. Some diapers have a sewn-in absorbent layer instead; a removable insert is not required for every cloth diaper style.
Do not confuse an insert with a liner. A reusable or disposable liner is a thin layer placed between the baby and the absorbent diaper, often to make solid waste easier to remove. It is not a substitute for an absorbent insert or a waterproof cover.

How insert materials compare
Material comparisons involve both how quickly an insert takes in moisture and how much it can hold, especially when compressed. The descriptions below come from product makers, retailers, and a municipal guide—not a neutral, standardized test ranking all fabrics. Construction, thickness, and the particular product matter.

When to use one insert or layer them
A single insert may be enough for a baby who wets lightly and is changed regularly. If the diaper is routinely reaching its absorbency limit, adding a layer or choosing a denser insert is an option. One cited approach is to place a faster absorber above a denser, higher-capacity layer: the top layer takes in a quick flood while the lower one adds capacity over time. This is a manufacturer-described strategy, not a guarantee against leaks.

Layering adds bulk. If extra material makes the diaper fit poorly or breaks the seal around the legs, more absorbency may not solve the problem. Choosing a setup for the situation
Newborns or fast wetting
A fast absorber may be worth considering, but the fit and bulk of the setup matter, particularly on a smaller baby. Kanga Care recommends its microfiber insert for newborns; that is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not a universal rule. [Kanga Care FAQ]

Longer daytime wear or heavier output
A denser natural-fiber insert or a faster-plus-denser layered combination is one option described by the cited manufacturers. Consider how often you can change the diaper and whether the added layers still allow a snug fit.
Overnight
Increase absorbency gradually and check that the diaper still seals comfortably around the legs. Kanga Care describes boosted pocket diapers and prefolds with covers as options for heavier overnight output, but the suitable combination varies by baby and diaper. [Kanga Care FAQ]

A flexible alternative to stuffing a pocket
A prefold can be folded and placed inside a waterproof cover, creating a two-part system. Some prefolds can also be pad-folded into a pocket diaper. Preference for natural fibers or a different wet feel
The municipal guide notes that natural materials may suit a child sensitive to synthetic fibers and cautions against using microfiber as the top absorbent layer. Washing, drying, and preparing inserts
Natural-fiber inserts generally take longer to dry than microfiber, according to the Shire of Mundaring guide. Preparation instructions are product-specific. Buttons Diapers, for example, recommends washing and drying before first use and gives different cycle counts for its microfiber/cotton and hemp/bamboo items; those counts are not universal instructions for every brand. What to do with liners and solids
