Before ordering a handmade cloth diaper on Etsy, confirm its construction, finished measurements, fiber content, included absorbency, cover requirements, care instructions, and return and shipping terms. Treat claims such as “one-size,” “organic,” or “high absorbency” as details to verify in the listing or with the seller—not as guarantees of fit, certification, or performance.
Start by identifying the diaper style
Diaper style determines what else you may need and where the absorbent layers go. Listings use terms such as fitted, pocket, and preflat, but names alone may not answer every practical question. Check the construction details and ask the seller if the design is unclear.

- Fitted: Absorbent throughout; the sampled fitted listings say a separate waterproof cover is needed.
- Pocket: Has a pocket for inserts. One sampled listing says its inserts are not included, accepts a variety of inserts, and requires a waterproof or water-resistant cover.
- Preflat: A cloth form designed to be worn under a cover in the sampled listing.
These are descriptions of particular listings, not a rule that every product using one of these names has the same construction. Confirm whether the specific diaper needs a cover and what inserts, if any, come with it.
Check the fit with numbers, not just “one-size”
Look for a stated weight range and finished dimensions, along with the adjustment and closure details. Useful measurements include waist, rise, and leg openings; details such as snaps or other adjustment options can help you judge how the diaper may fit your baby. If a listing gives only a broad label, message the seller for measurements and ask how the stated range was determined.

For example, a KINGSofmyCASTLE fitted listing describes its item as one-size for approximately 4–15 kg. That is the seller’s specification for that product, not an industry sizing standard or an independently tested fit range. A separate preflat listing offers several sizes and measurements. Neither example predicts how a diaper will fit a particular baby.
Read the fiber and layer details carefully
Check the materials for each component, not just the outer fabric. A diaper may combine different fibers in its shell, soaker, booster, or insert, and the listing should make clear which composition applies to which part. Also look for the number of layers and the dimensions of removable inserts.

Etsy says sellers select and describe material attributes and are responsible for their accuracy; Etsy does not verify them. Its guidance also cautions that an “organic cotton” material label does not necessarily mean the finished item is certified organic. If a certification is claimed, ask what it covers—the fiber, fabric, a component, or the finished diaper—and whether the seller can provide its scope or documentation.
Confirm what absorbency is included
Find out whether inserts or boosters are included, how many there are, and where they sit in the diaper. A pocket may be sold without inserts, while a fitted diaper may include several absorbent components. Do not assume that an accessory shown in photos is part of the order unless the listing says so.

One KINGSofmyCASTLE fitted listing describes a shell, soaker, booster, and two bamboo inserts. A separate listing from the same seller describes a three-layer bamboo and organic-cotton insert in two sizes: 32 × 12 cm and 39 × 12 cm. It says one or two boosters can extend absorption. These are seller descriptions, not independent performance tests; compare the dimensions and construction with the diaper you are buying.
Absorbency needs can vary with a baby’s age and wetting habits, as one sampled fitted/pocket listing notes. Ask the seller which insert arrangement is compatible with the diaper and whether the listing includes the pieces you need.

Establish whether a separate waterproof cover is needed
Do not infer cover requirements from the general category name. The sampled fitted and preflat listings call for a separate cover, and a sampled fitted/pocket listing says a waterproof or water-resistant cover is required. Confirm the requirement for the exact design you are considering, and ask the seller what sizing or construction is appropriate if the listing does not specify it.

Use the care directions for the specific item rather than assuming all handmade diapers can be washed or dried the same way. Check washing temperature, detergent guidance, drying method, and whether the seller recommends prewashing. Ask whether the fabric may shrink and whether the stated measurements are before or after washing if that affects your fit decision.

One sampled preflat listing notes that hand-cutting can produce variations in the cut. Treat the listing’s care and construction notes as product-specific, and ask about any uncertainty before ordering.
Check dispatch, delivery, and return terms before paying
Review the listing’s shipping origin and cost, processing or made-to-order time, estimated delivery, and return or exchange window. Check who pays return shipping and whether custom or made-to-order items have different terms. Etsy explains that estimated delivery depends on seller processing time, carrier transit times, shipping history, and the route, so an estimate is not a guaranteed arrival date.
Questions to message the seller
Etsy recommends contacting sellers with specific material questions. A short, focused message can also resolve sizing and order details that photos or listing labels leave unclear:
- What are the finished waist, rise, and leg-opening measurements, and what fit range has this exact pattern been used for?
- Which fibers are used in each layer, including hidden absorbent layers and any waterproof outer material?
- What does the stated certification cover, and can you share its scope or documentation?
- Exactly how many inserts are included? What are their dimensions and layers, and are they compatible with this design?
- Does this diaper need a separate cover? If so, what construction or sizing do you recommend?
- What wash and drying routine do you recommend? Should the item be prewashed, and should I expect shrinkage?
- What is the made-to-order lead time, return or exchange window, and buyer-paid return cost?
What “handmade” tells you—and what it does not
Etsy’s Handmade category rules prohibit mass-produced resale and allow physical items made by hand or with computerized tools; the platform also requires disclosure of production partners where applicable. Those rules describe Etsy’s marketplace policy. A category label does not independently establish the quality, fit, materials, or performance of an individual diaper.
