YouTube live captions must be sent to the stream: either generated automatically by YouTube when the option is available, embedded in the video by your encoder, or delivered through supported captioning software. The right method depends on your language, latency, production setup, and need for professional captions.
How closed captions reach viewers on YouTube Live
Closed captions display the spoken audio as text. YouTube’s guidance says creators must send captions to YouTube, either embedded in the video or through supported software that sends captions using HTTP POSTs. YouTube’s documented automatic-caption option is another route for eligible streams. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Automatic captions
When enabled, YouTube generates captions from the live audio. Its current guidance describes this as an English-only feature rolling out to English channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. You enable it for an individual stream, not once for the whole channel, and the option may not be available on every account or stream. YouTube encourages professional captions where possible. Captions supplied with the production
A captioning workflow can send caption data as part of the video signal or transmit it separately through supported software. This gives the production control over the caption source rather than relying on YouTube to transcribe the live audio. The embedded route uses EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data; the software route uses YouTube’s captions ingestion URL and HTTP POST delivery.

Choose the caption method that fits your stream

For software-delivered event captions, YouTube’s support information names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net. Treat these as examples in YouTube’s guidance, not endorsements or a guarantee that every version or plan is currently available. Some tools have version requirements. How to turn on automatic captions
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Select the specific stream you are setting up and open its stream settings.
- Turn on Closed captions, then choose Automatic captions as the caption source, if that option appears.
- Before the event, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance recommends testing and monitoring, but it does not provide a caption-specific accuracy guarantee. YouTube live streaming tips
If the Automatic captions choice is missing, the stream may not meet the documented language or latency conditions, or the feature may not have rolled out to your channel. YouTube does not publish a complete country-by-country, account-by-account, or stream-type eligibility matrix in the cited guidance.

How to send captions from an encoder or captioning software
Embed captions in the video
- In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and open Settings or Setup.
- Turn on Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708, then save.
- Configure the encoder or production system to emit EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data along with the video.
- Rehearse and confirm the stream preview and health before relying on the setup. YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow, even though the underlying standard can carry up to four.
Use captioning software for an event
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Advanced settings and set a broadcast delay of 30 or 60 seconds, as applicable to your workflow.
- Open Setup, enable Closed captions, and copy the Captions Ingestion URL.
- Enter that URL in the chosen supported captioning workflow so it can deliver captions to YouTube.
- Run a rehearsal and monitor the preview and stream health. Confirm that captions appear in the expected timing and position during the test.
Exact screens can vary as YouTube updates Studio. For current setup requirements, use YouTube’s live caption requirements and encoder streaming instructions.

Check captions in the Live Control Room preview before the broadcast, and monitor stream health while live. A successful video connection does not by itself establish that caption data is being sent or displayed correctly, so verify the captions in the preview during rehearsal.

After the stream ends, review the archived video separately. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the archive; it generates new captions through the VOD process, and those captions may differ from the ones viewers saw live. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning

Automatic captions are not an available choice
Check that you are editing an individual stream, not looking for a channel-wide switch. Confirm that the stream is in English and uses normal latency, the conditions YouTube names in its current guidance. Availability is being rolled out and is not documented as universal.

Embedded captions do not appear
Verify both ends of the setup: YouTube’s stream setting must be Embedded 608/708, and the encoder must actually emit EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data. Recheck in the preview; selecting the option in Studio alone does not create caption text.
Software-delivered captions are missing or late
Confirm that the caption workflow is using the exact Captions Ingestion URL copied from the stream setup, and that the production is configured for the 30- or 60-second broadcast delay required by YouTube’s event instructions. Rehearse the complete signal path before going live.
Live captions differ from captions on the recording
This is expected for YouTube automatic captions: the live text is not preserved on the archive, and YouTube generates a new VOD caption track after the broadcast. Review the archived captions independently.
