Should I clear data on Fire Stick? Yes, if a particular app is crashing, stuck, or contributing to a low-storage warning and lighter troubleshooting has not worked. Clear that app’s cache first; choose Clear Data only when you are prepared to reset the app and potentially sign in or configure it again. The setting is app-specific: it does not delete the app or factory-reset your Fire TV Stick.
What Clear Cache and Clear Data do
Fire TV gives you separate controls for an app’s cache and its data. Amazon describes cache and data clearing as resetting the app without deleting it. In Amazon’s words, “This resets the app without deleting it.” Amazon Fire TV support presents clearing these items as a way to address app problems and low-storage messages.

| Choice | What it changes | When to choose it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Cache | Removes cached files for the selected app. | Start here for a lighter cleanup or app trouble. | It is less disruptive than clearing app data; Amazon does not promise that every app’s cache behaves identically. |
| Clear Data | Resets the selected app’s data as well as its cache. | Use when the app remains broken or Amazon’s troubleshooting directs you to do so. | The app may ask you to sign in or configure it again. Exact effects on saved downloads, credentials, and preferences depend on the app; Amazon’s general guidance does not provide a universal inventory. |
Neither option is a device-wide factory reset, and clearing data does not uninstall the app. If a particular download, preference, or other saved item matters, check the app’s own support guidance before choosing Clear Data.

- From the Fire TV menu, open Settings.
- Select Applications.
- Open Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the app you want to troubleshoot.
- Choose Clear Cache for cache only. If you need to reset the app, choose Clear Data as well.
Amazon also provides Clear all Application Caches on supported interfaces. That option clears caches across apps; it is not a command to clear every app’s data. For a problem with one app, select that app rather than applying a broader cleanup. The menu names or layout can vary by device generation and Fire TV experience. Amazon’s Fire TV instructions show the app-specific controls.

Which troubleshooting step should you try?
One app crashes, will not open, or is unresponsive
Restart the Fire TV first. If the problem continues, clear the affected app’s cache; use Clear Data if the app still misbehaves and you accept that it may need to be set up again. Amazon also lists reinstalling the app and checking for a Fire TV system update as troubleshooting steps. Amazon’s app troubleshooting guide covers these options.
Prime Video will not play properly
Amazon’s Prime Video guidance includes clearing the app’s cache and data, checking for system updates, and restarting Fire TV and the modem or router. For HD or UHD playback, it also recommends checking HDCP compatibility where the display connection is relevant. See Amazon’s Prime Video troubleshooting steps.

You see a low-storage message
Amazon recommends clearing app cache or data for low-storage messages. Begin with cache when you want the less disruptive option; consider app data only if needed. On eligible Fire TV devices, Auto Offload can also manage storage by removing apps you have not used recently.
Auto Offload is different from clearing data
Auto Offload is a storage feature, not an app-reset control. Amazon says eligible devices may offload unused apps after 60 days and retain login information and settings preferences so they can be restored when the app is downloaded again. Availability has device and profile exclusions, so the feature is not available on every Fire TV. Amazon’s Auto Offload help page describes eligibility and behavior.

Amazon also says that on a low-storage device, cache optimization may automatically clear an app’s cache if that app has been unused for more than 30 days. This is an automatic cache behavior, not the same as manually choosing Clear Data. Amazon’s cache instructions explain the condition.
