To free up space on your Android phone or tablet, first check what is using storage, then remove files and apps you no longer need. Clear an app’s cache only when it helps, and delete local photos or videos only after confirming they are backed up. Menu names vary by device and Android version.
1. Find what is taking up space and remove files you do not need
Open Settings > Storage and review the categories shown. The exact path and labels vary by device, but this screen can help you identify whether downloads, photos, videos, or apps are using the most space. Android’s instructions for using Storage to free space are at Google’s Android Help page.

Delete only files you recognize and no longer need. Depending on the device, you may be able to select files under Storage > Free up space. Downloaded movies and music may need to be removed from the app that downloaded them rather than from a general file list.

- File is expendable: Delete it from the relevant category or downloading app.
- You want to keep it: Copy it to a computer over USB, confirm the copy is usable, then remove the phone or tablet copy. Google describes this transfer option in its Android storage instructions.
Storage is where files such as photos and music are kept; memory is where apps and Android run. Force-closing apps is not a general way to reclaim file storage. See Google’s explanation of storage and memory.

2. Uninstall or archive apps you no longer use
Remove apps you no longer need to recover the space used by their installed software. If you bought an app through Google Play, Google says you can download it again without buying it again. See Google Play’s uninstall instructions.
On supported devices, archiving is an alternative to uninstalling. It removes the app software while retaining personal data and leaving the app icon, so you can restore the app later if it remains available. Automatic app archiving can be enabled in Play Store settings; manual archive controls may also be available on supported Android 15 and later devices. Availability depends on the device, Android release, and app. Details are in Google Play’s app-archiving guidance.

Android may also optimize some apps you have not used for a while by deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, and stopping background activity and notifications. These behaviors and controls vary. Google explains them in its guidance on unused apps and archiving.
If you cannot find an equivalent storage or unused-app screen, the Files by Google app has a Clean workflow with an unused-app card. Its documented process asks for usage access before you choose apps to uninstall. See Files by Google’s cleanup instructions.

3. Clear cache selectively and handle photos with care
Clear cache only when useful
For a specific app, open its app-info screen in Settings, then look for Storage & cache or a similar label. Clearing cache removes temporary data; the app may take longer to open the next time while it rebuilds that data.
Clear storage is different: it permanently deletes all data for that app. Do not treat it as another name for clearing cache. Google recommends trying to delete data from within the app first. Remove local photo and video copies only after checking backup
In Google Photos, Free up space on this device removes local copies of photos and videos that have been backed up. Before using it, check that backup is complete for the items you want to keep. The option is described in Google Photos Help.
After local copies are removed, backed-up items remain viewable in Google Photos or at photos.google.com when you are signed in and online. They may no longer appear in your device’s built-in Gallery and will not be available offline. Google says photos and videos less than 30 days old may remain on the device after using the feature.

Do not assume an item can always be restored after deletion. Google warns that recovery may not be possible if an item is outside Trash retention, Trash has been emptied, or the item was permanently deleted without backup. Check Google Photos’ deletion and recovery guidance before removing anything you are unsure about.
