For many Windows problems, a clean install is no longer the first step I would try. Windows has less destructive repair and recovery options—but a clean install is still useful when those options fail, Windows will not boot, or you want to remove the existing setup. The right choice depends on what is wrong and what you can afford to lose.
Choose a repair route by what you need to keep
Microsoft documents several ways to repair or reinstall Windows, and they do not have the same effect on your files, apps, and settings. A reset is not the same as a clean install, and neither is the only way to repair Windows.

| Option | What it does | What it keeps or requires |
|---|---|---|
| Fix problems using Windows Update (Windows 11) | Reinstalls the current Windows version and repairs system files and components. | Keeps apps, files, and settings; requires internet and power during the process. Availability varies by version and configuration. Microsoft Support |
| Reset this PC — Keep my files | Reinstalls Windows. | Keeps personal files but removes apps and settings. Microsoft Support |
| Reset this PC — Remove everything | Reinstalls Windows. | Removes personal files, apps, and settings. An optional consumer data-cleaning feature makes removed files harder to recover, but does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards. Microsoft Support |
| In-place reinstall from installation media | Runs Windows Setup from within Windows. | Lets you choose to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. The first option retains files, apps, and settings. Microsoft Support |
| Clean install from bootable installation media | Installs Windows anew after booting from the media. | Removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Microsoft describes this as an advanced option. Microsoft Support |
| System Restore | Returns system files, registry settings, and installed programs to a restore point. | Does not affect personal files. Microsoft Support |
| Point-in-time restore | Returns the PC to an earlier saved state. | Apps, settings, and files changed after the chosen point are lost; cloud-stored files such as OneDrive files are unaffected. Microsoft Support |
When Windows still starts, try the least disruptive fit
For system problems on Windows 11, check the Windows Update repair option
Open Settings > System > Recovery, then select Fix problems using Windows Update if it appears. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet. If the option is missing, that Windows version or device configuration may not offer it. Microsoft Support

Choose Keep my files to reinstall Windows without removing personal files. This is not an app-preserving repair: installed apps and settings are removed, so plan to reinstall software and configure Windows again. Microsoft Support

- Step 1: Boot from the USB Flash Drive - Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. - Turn on your computer or restart it if it’s already on. - As the computer starts, press the key that opens the boot menu. This key varies by manufacturer and model, but it’s often F2, F10, Esc, or Delete. - In the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, locate the Boot Options or Boot Order section. - Use the arrow keys to select your USB drive and move it to the top of the boot priority list. - Save your changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.
- After that its will take few minutes to reset Windows login password
- Package includes instruction how to use "Password reset USB" software
Choose where Reset gets its Windows files
Cloud download fetches a fresh copy of Windows and is useful if local installation files may be corrupted or missing. Local reinstall uses files already on the PC, which can be faster on a slow connection, but may not include the latest updates. Microsoft Support
For a targeted rollback, consider a restore point
System Restore is narrower than reinstalling Windows: it rolls system files, registry settings, and installed programs back to a saved point without affecting personal files. Point-in-time restore instead returns the PC to an earlier saved state, including apps, settings, and files, so changes made after that point are lost. Use the option that matches the recovery feature available on your PC and the kind of change you need to undo.
When Windows will not boot, or you want a fresh start
If Windows cannot start, or you deliberately want to remove the existing installation, bootable installation media may be appropriate. A recovery USB is another recovery route, but it does not contain personal files. Creating a recovery drive erases the USB drive’s existing contents, so copy anything on it elsewhere first. If Windows is running and you can launch Setup from installation media, an in-place reinstall gives you retention choices. Read the selection carefully: choosing to keep nothing is not the same as retaining files and apps. Booting from the media and doing a clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Back up first; Microsoft characterizes this as an advanced option. - Copy important files to a separate backup location before starting. Reset does not create a Windows.old folder, so do not count on that folder as a rollback copy. Microsoft Support
- If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key before making changes. Windows may ask for it during recovery. Microsoft Support
- Do not force a restart just because the reset screen stays black for a while. Microsoft warns that manually restarting during this period can cause the reset to fail. Microsoft Support
Windows 10 support has ended
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date matters if you are deciding whether to repair or reinstall a Windows 10 PC: reinstalling does not change its support status. Check Microsoft’s current guidance for your device and any applicable support program before relying on Windows 10 for ongoing use. Microsoft Support
Does a clean install still make sense?
Yes, in the right circumstances. It remains a reasonable option when Windows will not boot, when you want to remove the existing setup, or when less destructive repairs have not solved the problem. But it is not the default answer to every Windows issue: the Windows 11 update repair option, Reset this PC, installation-media repair, and restore tools can address different problems while retaining some or all of what matters. The sources here establish those options and their documented trade-offs, not that clean installs are nearly pointless for every PC or failure.
