Claude can be the better assistant for a particular task, but that does not make it safe to rely on as your only route to important work. Anthropic has documented service interruptions, and the strongest comparison with ChatGPT cited here comes from a study published in 2025 and covers February 2023 through August 2024—not current service performance. If a missed session would matter, keep your work outside the chat and have a fallback.
Is Claude down, and what does an outage mean for your work?
Anthropic’s status page recorded an incident on September 29, 2026 affecting Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and some Claude API requests. Anthropic said the impact ran from 14:00 to 14:59 UTC and warned that some messages sent during that interval may not have been saved. Anthropic’s incident record

This establishes that interruptions can affect both access and work continuity. It is one incident record, not a measure of annual uptime. Status pages are useful for checking current conditions and reviewing reported events, but incident counts depend on how a provider defines and reports incidents.

Is Claude more reliable than ChatGPT?
There is no basis here for a current, apples-to-apples 2026 reliability ranking. The best cited comparison is a 2025 study by Chu, Talluri, Lu, and Iosup, whose availability data covers February 2023 through August 2024—not current service performance. Read the study
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | Anthropic / Claude | OpenAI / ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Average time between failures | 5.22 days, as reported in the study for its February 2023–August 2024 observation period | 8.48 days, as reported in the study for its February 2023–August 2024 observation period |
| Average recovery time | 2.70 hours, as reported in the study for its observation period | The study does not state a comparable numerical value |
The study’s authors summarize the distinction this way: “Failures in OpenAI’s ChatGPT take longer to resolve but occur less frequently than those in Anthropic’s Claude.” Chu, Talluri, Lu, and Iosup’s study reports that Anthropic’s incidents occurred more frequently on average but were resolved faster; it also reports better failure isolation for OpenAI services. These study-specific averages are not service-level guarantees and cannot predict which service is more reliable today.
The authors observed declining Anthropic availability after April 2024 and suggested product releases and increased demand as possible explanations. That proposed cause is tentative, not established. Study discussion of the trend

What should “reliable” mean when choosing an AI assistant?
A useful comparison separates service performance from the quality of the answers. Outage data can describe whether a service was disrupted and how it recovered; it cannot tell you which model will do better on your task.
- Availability: Can you reach the website, app, or API when you need it?
- Incident frequency: How often are disruptions reported over a defined period using comparable data?
- Recovery time: How long do those disruptions last?
- Scope and isolation: Does an issue affect one model or feature, or several products?
- Work continuity: Can you recover drafts, files, context, and outputs after an interruption?
- Task performance: Does the model produce useful, accurate results for the specific work? This requires task-specific evaluation, not outage statistics.
Even a provider’s own availability figure may not match your experience. OpenAI cautions that its metrics are aggregated across tiers, models, and error types, and that customer availability can vary by subscription tier, model, and API features. OpenAI status metrics explanation

Does model reliability mean the same thing as service uptime?
No. A service can be reachable while its answers are imperfect, and a capable model is of little use if you cannot access it. Anthropic’s February 2026 risk report discusses model reliability separately from service availability. For Claude Opus 4.5 and Opus 4.6, it reports a no-chain-of-thought 50%-reliability time horizon on an uncontaminated math benchmark of about 3.3 minutes with five problem repeats and 2.4 minutes without repeats. Those figures describe performance on a narrow benchmark under specified conditions. They are not a broad consumer reliability score, an uptime measure, or proof that Claude is better or worse for your own work.

Can you rely on Claude for important work?
Use Claude when it serves the task, but avoid making any hosted chatbot the sole place your important work exists. The September 2026 incident record explicitly notes that some messages may not have been saved. Treat that as a practical reason to build continuity into your workflow, not as a claim that every interruption causes data loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Save drafts and essential outputs outside the chat. Keep a local or otherwise accessible copy of work you cannot afford to lose.
- Retain prompts and source material. Store key instructions, files, and references so you can resume elsewhere if access fails.
- Verify consequential outputs. Check important facts and decisions independently rather than treating a model response as authoritative.
- Prepare a fallback route. Know which alternative provider, manual process, or non-AI workflow can keep the work moving.
These are prudent continuity measures based on documented interruptions and the possibility of unsaved messages, not guarantees from either provider.
