There is no single best Claude Skill for every workflow. In Suraj Khaitan’s May 10, 2026 DEV Community article, he says he tried 100 skills and ranks ten favorites, from PDF and office-document tools to web testing and design. That is his reported shortlist—not an independently verified comparison. The practical takeaway is to choose a skill for a recurring task, confirm it works on your Claude surface, and review its files before trusting it.
What Claude Skills do
A Skill is a folder of reusable task instructions that can also include scripts and reference materials. Claude can use one when its description indicates that it fits the task, then load its instructions and supporting resources as needed. This progressive approach lets a skill provide focused guidance without placing every instruction in every conversation. See Anthropic’s Skills overview and documentation on authoring Skills.

Skills are not merely prompt snippets: a package may contain executable code. That can make a workflow more capable, but it also makes source, permissions, and dependencies important.

The following order reflects Khaitan’s ranking in his May 10, 2026 article, not a ranking reproduced or independently verified here. His post says he evaluated trigger precision, determinism, token economy, reusability, and safety posture, and reports eliminating about 70% of his sample. Those are author-reported methods and results, not independently established measurements.

Anthropic’s materials also describe document, creative and design, technical, and enterprise workflow categories, and its official repository includes document and example skill collections. Those materials support the categories and examples—not Khaitan’s ordering or claims of superiority. See Anthropic’s Skills repository.
How to choose a Skill that earns a place in your workflow
A long list of recommendations is less useful than a skill you can invoke reliably for a task you actually repeat. Before installing one, check these points:
Rank #2
- Task fit and trigger precision: Is the skill meant for the work you need, and does its description make clear when Claude should use it?
- Repeatability: Does it rely on clear instructions, predictable scripts, or both? Scripts can make specific operations more consistent, but they also add code to inspect and maintain.
- Surface compatibility: Does it work in Claude.ai, Claude Code, or the API you use? Availability and setup are not interchangeable.
- Maintenance burden: Review its references, dependencies, and bundled files. A skill that needs frequent updates or special setup may not suit an occasional task.
- Security and access: Consider what data Claude can see and what actions or tools the skill can use. Use only sources you trust, and inspect the complete package before giving it access to sensitive work.
Install Skills on the Claude surface you use
Claude.ai
Anthropic’s Help Center says Skills are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans and require code execution to be enabled. For individual accounts, the documented setup is to enable code execution and file creation under Settings > Capabilities, then open Customize > Skills. Team and Enterprise access can also depend on owner-controlled organization policies. Settings and eligibility can change; check the current Skills Help Center article for the labels and availability that apply to your account.
Claude Code
Anthropic documents two routes: install Skills through plugins from the official anthropics/skills marketplace, or put a personal skill in ~/.claude/skills. The repository offers document-skills and example-skills plugins. Note the platform distinction: Anthropic’s current documentation says its prebuilt PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and PDF document Skills are not available in Claude Code, even though Claude Code supports custom Skills. Consult the Claude Code Skills guide for current installation details.
Rank #3
API
For API use, Skills require the code execution tool; custom Skills can be uploaded and referenced through the API. A skill uploaded or installed on one surface does not automatically sync to another, so plan separate setup for claude.ai, Claude Code, and API workflows. See Anthropic’s overview for the API and platform details.
Create a custom Skill
Start with a task you repeat and describe the workflow so Claude can recognize when it applies. Anthropic’s authoring documentation requires YAML frontmatter fields named name and description; the description should explain both what the skill does and when to use it. Put the main instructions in SKILL.md, and add reference files or scripts only when they materially help the workflow.
Rank #4
- Define the recurring job. Identify the input, the expected output, and any rules Claude must follow.
- Write a specific description. Make its intended trigger and task explicit so Claude can distinguish it from unrelated requests.
- Add focused instructions and resources. Keep core guidance in
SKILL.md; include supporting material only where it is useful. - Test with realistic requests. Check that Claude invokes the skill when appropriate, avoids it when it is not, and produces the required result.
- Review and maintain the package. Inspect scripts and dependencies, then update the skill as the underlying workflow changes.
Anthropic’s Skill authoring guidance explains structure and progressive disclosure; the official repository includes a skill template and examples.

Security checks before enabling a Skill
Anthropic warns that Skills may contain executable code. Depending on the tools and access available, an untrusted package could cause unauthorized actions or expose data. Treat a Skill as software, not as harmless text.
Best Value
- Prefer sources you trust, and inspect all package files rather than only the description or main instruction file.
- Pay particular attention to scripts, external URLs, and dependencies.
- For sensitive or production workflows, audit the complete package and limit execution and data access to what the task requires.
- Test in a constrained setting before relying on the Skill with important data or actions.
