SemiAnalysis estimates that Claude Pro delivered about five times the API-equivalent value of ChatGPT in its selected mid-tier comparison—but that is a workload-dependent estimate, not proof that Claude is five times better for every subscriber. Its analysis also estimated monthly token capacity of 2.9 billion for Claude Pro versus 1 billion for ChatGPT at the $20 tier. Those figures, reported by The Register on October 6, 2026, measure estimated usage converted to API prices, not completed tasks or answer quality.
What the five-times estimate measures
SemiAnalysis published its comparison on October 5, 2026. The firm estimated the API-equivalent value of usage available under selected mid-tier subscriptions, using its chosen models, token types, workload mix, and plan limits. The Register reported the conclusion as about five times the value for Anthropic over the comparison.

The estimate is not a universal ranking of Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions. SemiAnalysis co-authors Andrew Megalaa, Max Kan, and Dylan Patel put the dependency plainly: “Put differently, it doesn’t make sense to say a plan is worth $X in isolation—you need to consider the full (plan, model, workload) tuple.” Their analysis describes repeated calls to isolate token types, measuring usage-meter movement, estimating monthly capacity from five-hour and weekly limits, and converting that use into API-equivalent dollars for a stated workload mix.

That method can help compare usage under specified assumptions, but its output is not the same as value to an individual. A larger token allowance does not show that a model completes more useful work, produces better answers, or saves more time. API prices can also differ by model and token type, so converting subscription use to API dollars depends on the prices and workload selected.

What the reported numbers mean for a $20 plan
The Register reported SemiAnalysis’s estimate of 2.9 billion monthly tokens for Claude Pro and 1 billion for ChatGPT at the $20 monthly tier. Treat these as the firm’s estimates, not guaranteed allowances or a direct measure of comparable output. Token counts do not account for whether a task is completed correctly, how much prompting it takes, or whether the models are equally suited to the task.
The comparison should not be read as a current, complete price-and-feature table for both companies. The reviewed sources establish Anthropic’s current published prices but do not establish OpenAI’s current official price and usage terms. OpenAI plan prices, included models, and limits should be checked on its live official pricing and plan pages before making a purchase decision.

Claude Pro
Anthropic’s pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Claude Pro at $20 monthly or $200 billed annually, displayed as $17 per month with annual billing. Pro adds usage and features including Claude Code. Applicable taxes may be extra, usage limits apply, and Anthropic says its plans and prices may change. See Anthropic’s pricing page.

Anthropic lists Max from $100 per month. It offers either 5x or 20x Pro usage, higher output limits, and priority access during high-traffic times. The “5x” and “20x” here describe usage relative to Pro, not the API-equivalent value estimate in SemiAnalysis’s comparison.
Why real usage varies
Anthropic says Claude usage depends on message and attachment length, conversation length, model, and feature. Its Help Center describes both a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit; the amount a particular subscriber can do before hitting a limit therefore varies with use. A paid Claude.ai plan does not include API usage through Anthropic Console. API access is a separate matter. Anthropic explains Pro usage limits here.
How to decide which subscription is better for you
Start with the work you actually do, rather than the headline token total. Consider the model you will use, how often you use it, whether your sessions involve long conversations or attachments, and whether the subscription’s limits interrupt your workflow. Then judge the usefulness and quality of the results for your tasks.
- For frequent chat use: Compare the plan’s actual limits and the models included, not only estimated monthly tokens.
- For coding: Check whether the relevant coding tools and models are included in the subscription and whether their limits fit your working pattern.
- For API development: A chat subscription is not a substitute for API billing; Claude Pro does not include Anthropic Console API usage.
- For a price comparison: Compare current official plan pages, including monthly versus annual billing, before choosing. The SemiAnalysis estimate is tied to the plans, models, and assumptions it examined.
- For quality-sensitive work: Compare task outcomes on your own representative prompts. The reported token and API-equivalent figures do not establish which service gives better results for your tasks.
Why the comparison can change
Subscription limits, model lineups, and API prices can change, affecting both actual use and any conversion to API-equivalent dollars. Anthropic explicitly says, “Price and plans are subject to change at Anthropic’s discretion,” on its pricing page. SemiAnalysis likewise warns that providers can change limits and that API-equivalent value can mislead when API prices differ or token volumes fail to capture task outcomes.
