Claude can help build an Excel variance report from actual and budget or forecast data, but you must define the financial rules and check the results. Anthropic describes Claude for Excel as able to analyze and modify existing workbooks and create spreadsheets; that does not mean it knows your organization’s variance conventions or guarantees correct formulas.
What Claude can do in Excel
Anthropic announced Claude for Excel as a research preview in October 2025. The add-in works in an Excel sidebar and, according to Anthropic, can read, analyze, modify, and create workbooks; explain its changes; and link explanations to referenced cells. Anthropic also describes it as able to work with workbook structure and formula dependencies, debug formulas, populate templates, and build spreadsheets from scratch. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent accuracy assessment. Anthropic’s Claude for Excel announcement

Anthropic separately described spreadsheet file creation in September 2025, including budget templates with variance calculations, formulas, and multiple sheets. That can provide a starting point for a new workbook, but it does not establish a standard variance-report layout or prove the generated formulas match your accounting policy. Anthropic also announced support for MCP connectors in Claude for Excel in February 2026, describing connections to outside tools and data sources, including S&P Global, LSEG, Daloopa, PitchBook, Moody’s, and FactSet. Anthropic said the capability was available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans at that time. That is a dated availability statement, not confirmation that a particular connector is enabled for your account or supplies the right data. Anthropic’s connector announcement
Prepare the workbook and define the rules
Work on a duplicate workbook or clean template so the source data remains available for comparison. Before asking Claude to build anything, identify the actuals and budget or forecast sheets, the date or period fields, account or department identifiers, and the units used. Tell Claude which fields are authoritative if there are duplicates or similarly named columns.
Define variance according to your organization’s policy. For example, actual minus budget is a common possible definition, but it is not universal; favorable and unfavorable labels can also depend on the account type and sign convention. State how to treat missing periods, zero or negative budgets, and percentage denominators. Do not assume Claude will infer these rules correctly from the spreadsheet.

Prompt Claude to create the report
Specify the output sheets and columns you want, along with the source fields and calculation rules. Ask Claude to flag missing or inconsistent inputs rather than silently filling gaps. For example, adapt this prompt to your approved business definitions:

Using the Actuals and Budget sheets, create a new variance report by department and month. Use actual minus budget for dollar variance and (actual minus budget) divided by budget for percentage variance. Flag zero or missing budget values instead of dividing by zero. Keep the source sheets unchanged. Show the formulas and source cells you used, list assumptions, and reconcile the report totals to the source data.
The formulas in this example are illustrative. Replace them if your organization uses a different variance direction, percentage basis, or favorable/unfavorable rule.
Rank #4
For a useful report, you might request a summary sheet, period-and-account detail, dollar and percentage variances, explanations of material movements, and a concise assumptions note. Ask for the calculation formulas and source-cell references so you can trace how the report was assembled.

Review formulas and reconcile the output
Anthropic says Claude for Excel can explain changes and point users to referenced cells. Use those explanations as navigation aids, then inspect the underlying inputs and formulas yourself. Anthropic’s Claude for Excel announcement
Best Value
- Compare report totals with the source actuals and budget or forecast totals for the same periods and scope.
- Recalculate a sample of rows, including positive, negative, zero, and missing-value cases.
- Check that periods and identifiers align correctly between sheets and that formulas fill through every intended row.
- Confirm the sign convention and favorable/unfavorable labels against your finance team’s rules.
- Review assumptions, exclusions, and any flagged inconsistencies before sharing the workbook.
Anthropic’s product descriptions do not guarantee error-free financial reporting, and the cited material does not independently test a Claude-generated report against a finance team’s policies. Treat the output as a draft that requires reconciliation and review.

Anthropic reported several figures in separate contexts; none should be read as a measure of the accuracy of your variance report.
- In October 2025, Anthropic reported a 55.3% result for Sonnet 4.5 on the Vals AI Finance Agent benchmark. That benchmark figure does not measure a user’s variance-report outcome. Source
- Anthropic said in its October 2025 announcement that it planned to collect feedback from 1,000 initial Claude for Excel users before broader rollout. That was an announced preview plan, not evidence that the cohort completed or a study result. Source
- Anthropic reported that a FundamentalLabs Excel agent built with Claude Opus 4 passed five of seven Financial Modeling World Cup levels and achieved 83% accuracy on complex Excel tasks. This refers to that deployment and evaluation, not the Claude for Excel add-in or a variance-report test. Source
Can a reusable skill make the workflow more specific?
Anthropic says skills can support specialized workflows and that its own skills can read and generate professional Excel spreadsheets with formulas. Its announcement describes reusable or custom skills as a way to adapt Claude to workflows, but does not identify a dedicated variance-report skill. Anthropic’s Agent Skills announcement
