Claude Code Watermarks: What Developers Should Know

Anthropic says Claude code may carry a statistical watermark, especially in flexible comments, but constrained code generally has less signal. Detection can suggest Claude involvement, not prove authorship.

Yes, Claude may watermark code, but Anthropic says code generally carries less of the signal than prose. Exact syntax and behavior leave fewer safe wording choices for a watermark to influence; comments and other flexible text may still carry one. A positive detection result can suggest Claude was involved, but it cannot prove who wrote a program or establish authorship or ownership.

How Claude’s text watermark is supposed to work

Anthropic describes its watermark as a statistical pattern created while generating text. Among plausible next tokens, the model is nudged toward some choices in a way that can later be checked using a relevant key. The method does not add visible wording or hidden characters, and Anthropic says the signal carries no identifying information about a user, organization, or conversation.

Anthropic says its approach is a version of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text, published in a 2024 Nature paper. These implementation details come from Anthropic’s description of its own system.

Why code may carry less of a watermark than prose

Many code tokens are constrained by syntax and behavior: changing a token that has no safe substitute could make the program incorrect or break it. Anthropic says the watermark’s nudge is not applied where a different choice would compromise correctness, so code is generally less amenable to watermarking than prose. This is a difference of degree, not a guarantee that code is never watermarked.

Comments can be different. They often allow several ways to express the same thought, leaving more room for the statistical pattern. Anthropic says the effect on code itself is negligible, but flexible text associated with code may still carry a signal.

What a detection result can—and cannot—tell you

Anthropic says its keyed check is intended to estimate whether text was likely partly written by Claude. It cannot tell whether Claude produced the original code or heavily edited existing text, and it cannot identify a particular user, organization, or conversation. It does not establish authorship, ownership, or legal responsibility, nor does it change a user’s rights under Anthropic’s terms.

A watermark check is also not the same as a general AI detector. Anthropic contrasts its keyed method with services that analyze linguistic patterns, naming Pangram as an example. Anthropic’s article does not establish how well those services detect Claude-generated source code.

Why detection may be uncertain, and what editing changes

A detector needs enough relevant text and enough plausible alternatives for a statistical pattern to emerge. Anthropic says confidence increases with passage length; short samples may provide too little evidence. Factual text with few interchangeable choices can also carry less signal. If Claude only proofreads human-written text for grammar, relatively little Claude-selected wording may remain to detect.

Anthropic says light editing may not remove a watermark completely, while replacing every word can. It does not give a reliable rewriting threshold at which detection stops working. A result should therefore be treated as an estimate, not a definitive authorship test.

Which Claude outputs Anthropic says are covered

Anthropic says watermarking applies globally to outputs from models released after August 2, 2026, in connection with the EU AI Act Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. Anthropic reported that it and around 190 other signatories signed the code in July 2026; that figure is Anthropic’s reported count.

Anthropic also says the transition for older models is underway, with watermarking for models released before August 2 being added over the following months. It has not provided a model-by-model completion schedule in the cited announcement, so coverage of a particular older model cannot be inferred from the general rollout statement. Anthropic says it is applying watermarking globally at launch because it lacks a durable way to scope it by region.

Can developers check code with Anthropic’s detector?

Anthropic describes its detection API as being in private preview for eligible organizations, including specified public-interest groups and enterprises with relevant compliance obligations. It says access is expected to expand over time, but the API is not described as a public checker that any developer can use. Details are in Anthropic’s announcement and its content-markers article.

Anthropic also distinguishes text watermarking from a separate file label: it says any C2PA-aware tool can read that metadata label, which is not embedded or hidden. Checking file metadata is not the same as detecting the statistical text watermark in source code.
