Claude Code is a terminal-first coding agent for working in a project, either interactively or from scripts. OpenHands is a broader agent platform: its Agent Canvas offers a visual workspace for parallel sessions, automations, and different execution backends, while its SDK supports custom workflows. They can also work together: OpenHands documents connecting Claude Code to Agent Canvas through ACP.

What each tool is designed to do
Claude Code: a coding agent in the terminal
Claude Code is centered on a project directory and a command-line workflow. You can use it interactively while exploring or editing a codebase, or run it non-interactively with the CLI’s -p mode. That makes it a natural fit for tasks such as understanding unfamiliar code, making edits, or incorporating agent work into a script or pipeline. Its CLI also exposes controls for models, permissions, and which tools are allowed. See the CLI reference for the documented options.
OpenHands: a platform for agents and workflows
OpenHands covers more than one way of working. Agent Canvas is a visual workspace for launching and managing agents, including parallel sessions and recurring or event-driven automations. It can connect to Claude Code, Codex, or the OpenHands harness through ACP, and supports local, VM, or cloud backends. The OpenHands SDK is a separate route for building customized agents and programmatic workflows. These are distinct components: Canvas is the visual workspace, while the SDK is for code-driven customization.
Setup and prerequisites
Setting up Claude Code
Anthropic’s setup documentation lists macOS 10.15 or later, Ubuntu 20.04 or later or Debian 10 or later, or Windows 10 or later with WSL or Git for Windows. It also lists at least 4 GB of RAM, Node.js 18 or later, and internet access. Requirements and install guidance can change, so check the current official setup page before installing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install Node.js 18 or later and confirm your system meets Anthropic’s listed requirements.
- Install the CLI using the documented npm command:
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code. - Open a project directory and run
claudeto start. - Authenticate through Anthropic Console with active billing, Claude Pro or Max, or an enterprise deployment through Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. A Pro or Max subscription is not the only authentication route.
Setting up OpenHands
OpenHands has multiple setup paths, so choose by component and execution boundary rather than treating the platform as one installer. Agent Canvas is presented as a local visual workspace with a connection wizard for Claude Code, Codex, or the OpenHands harness via ACP. The GitHub quickstart also documents direct installation of Agent Canvas using Node.js and uv, as well as a Docker sandbox route. Follow the repository quickstart for current commands and security details, or the Canvas page for its connection and backend options.
- Local, no-sandbox route: The agent server runs on the host and has full filesystem access. Use it only with a clear understanding of the directories and capabilities exposed.
- Docker sandbox route: The documented setup mounts selected project folders into a container, providing a more bounded execution setup than unrestricted host access. Review the current instructions before relying on it as a security boundary.
- VM or cloud backend: Canvas documents these as execution options; availability and setup depend on the chosen service and current product configuration.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Claude Code for a terminal-centered project workflow
- You prefer to stay in a terminal while an agent helps inspect or edit a repository.
- You want both interactive use and a documented non-interactive mode for scripts or pipelines.
- You want CLI-level permission and tool configuration.
Choose OpenHands Agent Canvas for visual orchestration
- You want a visual place to manage multiple agent sessions in parallel.
- You need recurring or event-driven automations rather than only an interactive project session.
- You want to select among local, VM, and cloud execution backends.
Choose the OpenHands SDK for custom agent workflows
The SDK is the closer fit when you want to define agent behavior in code, connect internal tools or APIs, or programmatically control task creation, routing, and execution. See the OpenHands SDK page for its stated capabilities.

Use both when you want Claude Code inside a broader workspace
OpenHands documents ACP-based Claude Code connections to Agent Canvas. That can suit a workflow where Claude Code remains the agent while Canvas provides the visual workspace or automation layer. Compatibility and configuration depend on the current releases and connection instructions.
Security, cost, and availability considerations
Check what the agent can access
Neither product should be called categorically safer on the basis of the cited documentation. Anthropic documents permission modes and allowed or disallowed tools for Claude Code. OpenHands’ repository makes the execution distinction explicit: no-sandbox operation gives the server full host filesystem access, while the Docker route mounts selected folders. Before running either setup, identify the exposed code and directories, the commands that require approval, where execution occurs, and who reviews changes.

Compare your actual service route, not just the tool name
Anthropic lists Console usage billing, Claude Pro or Max authentication, and enterprise routes; these represent different ways to access Claude Code, and the subscription is optional if another route applies. OpenHands describes free and open-source local or self-managed routes alongside optional managed Cloud and enterprise options. The cited official pages do not establish a directly comparable total cost or a complete regional availability matrix, so check current vendor pricing and service availability before choosing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Claude Code or OpenHands better?
There is no substantiated head-to-head benchmark here that establishes an overall winner. The practical distinction is the job: Claude Code is the more direct choice for a terminal-based coding agent and scripted CLI use; OpenHands is the broader choice for visual orchestration, multiple sessions, automation, or custom SDK workflows. If those needs overlap, OpenHands Canvas documents a way to connect Claude Code rather than requiring an either-or decision.
