There is no universally cheaper choice. Cursor offers a free tier and paid subscriptions with included model usage; Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans and shares their usage limits with Claude. Your actual cost depends on the plan you choose, the models and tasks you use, and whether you exceed included usage.

Compare the billing models, not just the subscription prices

A subscription’s monthly price does not show how much coding you can do before paying more. Cursor bundles a defined amount of model usage into its plans, while Claude Code draws from the limits of the Claude plan you use. For either product, the practical comparison is the recurring fee plus any extra usage you expect to need.

Cursor’s pricing page lists a free Hobby plan and paid individual plans. Its separate model-pricing documentation lists Pro at $20 per month, Pro Plus at $60 per month, and Ultra at $200 per month. Those are vendor-listed prices; check the plan and billing cadence shown for your location, since Cursor says applicable taxes are additional. Cursor pricing and Cursor Models & Pricing.

Anthropic says Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans. The subscription’s usage limits are shared between Claude and Claude Code, so using Claude for other work can reduce what remains for coding. Claude pricing.

What counts as included usage?

Cursor: model pools and model choice

Cursor separates monthly usage into two pools: Cursor Models and Other Models. Pro, Pro Plus, and Ultra include both pools; the India-only Start plan covers the Cursor Models pool. The model you select affects how quickly included usage is consumed. Once it is used up, Cursor offers the option to enable on-demand usage or upgrade. See Cursor’s usage and limits documentation.

Cursor also lists Teams Standard at $40 per user per month and Premium at $120 per user per month. For Teams and Enterprise, requests to third-party models incur a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens on top of the model API price; first-party Cursor models are exempt. This team and enterprise charge should not be applied to individual subscriptions. Check Cursor’s plan and model pricing for the terms that apply to your account.

Claude Code: shared Claude limits

Claude plan limits apply across Claude and Claude Code. Anthropic says those limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window, with weekly limits also applying to paid plans. How much you can do varies with conversation length, task complexity, model, and features; Anthropic does not promise a fixed number of messages. If a paid user reaches a limit, usage credits at standard API rates are an available way to continue. See Claude pricing and Anthropic’s Claude Code plan guidance.

When each option may cost less

  • Cursor may be less expensive to try if its free Hobby plan meets your needs. Whether it remains the lower-cost option for regular work depends on how much included usage your tasks consume and whether you need on-demand usage.
  • Claude Code may be cost-effective if you already pay for a Claude plan and its shared allowance covers both your coding and other Claude use. If those uses compete for the same limit, you may reach it sooner.
  • Neither subscription price settles the comparison if you regularly exceed included usage. Cursor’s on-demand usage and Anthropic’s usage credits have different billing mechanics, so compare your likely extra charges rather than assuming one is cheaper.

Anthropic announced on May 6, 2026 that it doubled Claude Code five-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans and removed peak-hours reductions for Pro and Max. That is dated context, not a substitute for the current plan terms: check Anthropic’s pricing page for the limits that apply now.

How to estimate your own monthly cost

A useful comparison measures your work rather than relying on a generic “typical developer” estimate. The following is a personal estimation method, not a published head-to-head benchmark.

  1. Choose a representative week of coding tasks, including the kinds of work you expect to do regularly.
  2. Use each service for the same tasks and time period, noting the model selected and the usage readings shown in each product.
  3. Record how much included capacity you consume and any on-demand charges or usage credits needed to continue.
  4. Project the observed usage across a month, then add the applicable subscription cost, likely extra usage, and taxes. Include Claude use outside coding when estimating Claude Code’s shared allowance.
  5. Check the usage settings and current plan terms before a heavy coding session so you know whether extra usage is enabled and how it is billed.

Cursor’s usage pools and model-dependent consumption are described in its usage documentation; Anthropic explains Claude Code’s variable, shared plan limits in its plan guidance.
