Choose Claude Code if you want an agent that works from the terminal alongside your existing IDE; choose Cursor if you want an AI coding editor with its agent workflow built in. Neither is established as the faster or better performer by the official documentation and pricing pages reviewed here. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a verified account of 30 days of hands-on testing.
How Claude Code and Cursor differ
The main distinction is where each product puts the agent in your workflow. Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal-oriented coding agent that can work alongside existing development tools. Cursor is an AI coding editor whose documentation centers on using an agent within an editor workflow.

| Question | Claude Code | Cursor |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you work? | In a terminal, with IDE extensions available for VS Code, Cursor, and JetBrains, according to Anthropic’s product page. | In an AI coding editor with integrated agent workflows, according to Cursor’s documentation. |
| What does the documented workflow cover? | Anthropic describes work including bug fixes, testing, refactors, and new features. These are vendor-stated capabilities, not comparative test results. | Cursor documents codebase understanding, planning and building features, bug fixing, and reviewing changes. |
| How can you customize or connect it? | Anthropic lists command-line tools such as Git, MCP servers, and IDE extensions. | Cursor documents integrations and customization through plugins, skills, MCPs, and rules. |
Which one fits your workflow?
Choose Claude Code if you want to keep your current editor
Claude Code is a natural fit if your editor, terminal, and command-line tools are already central to how you work, and you want an agent that can operate alongside them. Anthropic’s product FAQ says it “runs in your terminal and works alongside your preferred IDE and development tools without requiring you to change your workflow.” That is Anthropic’s description of its product, not an independent finding.
The product page lists native extensions for VS Code, Cursor, and JetBrains, as well as CLI tools and MCP servers. The practical question is whether that terminal-first approach fits your day-to-day work—not whether it is inherently more capable than an editor-based agent.

Choose Cursor if you want an AI editor with an integrated agent
Cursor may suit you if you want code understanding, planning, implementation, bug fixing, and review in an editor-centered workflow. Its documentation also describes plugins, skills, MCPs, and rules for extending or customizing that environment.
These documented features explain the products’ intended workflows; they do not establish that one produces better code or completes tasks more reliably.

Can you use Claude Code inside Cursor?
Yes. Anthropic lists Cursor among the IDEs with a native Claude Code extension, so the choice is not necessarily Cursor editor versus Claude Code terminal with no overlap. You can use Cursor as your editor and Claude Code as an agent alongside it. That does not make Claude Code and Cursor’s own agent the same product or establish which agent is better for a particular task.

Anthropic’s product page also lists Team, Enterprise, and Console access routes. For Console use, Anthropic says usage consumes API tokens at standard API pricing. Cursor lists additional plan options beyond Hobby and Individual. See Anthropic’s Claude Code page and Cursor’s pricing page for current terms.
A lower entry price does not necessarily mean a lower cost for your workload. Compare the usage you expect, the limits that apply, and whether you prefer a subscription or Console API usage. The listed subscription prices alone cannot establish which service costs less for a given developer.

Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
There is no supported overall winner here. The official sources describe features, integrations, access routes, and prices; they do not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of code quality, speed, reliability, or cost on the same tasks. No independent comparative statistic is established by those sources either.

A meaningful performance comparison would need the same tasks, product versions, model settings, plan tiers, usage constraints, and evaluation criteria. Without that evidence, treat claims that one is categorically better as unverified. Choose based on the workflow you want and the integrations you actually use.

How to make the decision for your project
- Start with your preferred work surface. If you intend to keep your editor and use an agent from the terminal, consider Claude Code. If you want an editor built around integrated agent workflows, consider Cursor.
- Check your integrations. Match the tools you rely on against Claude Code’s listed CLI, Git, MCP, and IDE-extension support, or Cursor’s documented integrations and customization options.
- Estimate your actual usage. Review the live plan limits and model allowances for your region and billing choice rather than comparing only the monthly entry prices.
- Try a representative task before committing. Use a task from your own codebase and judge the result against your needs; a vendor feature list cannot predict how well a tool will fit your project.
