Claude Code Privacy: What Happens to Your Code and Chats

Claude Code privacy depends on whether you use a consumer account, commercial product, Enterprise organization, or approved zero-data-retention arrangement. Training and retention are separate questions.

Claude Code’s privacy depends on how you sign in. Anthropic says consumer Free, Pro, and Max sessions may be used to improve models under specified conditions, while commercial inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. Neither policy means that all data stays on your device: training and storage are separate, and the applicable retention rules depend on the product and agreement.

Does Anthropic use Claude Code sessions to train models?

It depends on the account. Anthropic’s consumer training policy covers Claude Code used with Free, Pro, and Max accounts. Its commercial policy applies to commercial products and says inputs and outputs are not used to train models by default. Check which account or organization key Claude Code is using before applying either rule.

Free, Pro, and Max accounts

Anthropic says consumer chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models if the user allows it, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or if the user explicitly submits material or otherwise opts in. Training-related data may include the associated conversation and its content. The policy also says raw connector content, including material from remote and local MCP servers, is not included unless copied directly into the conversation. This describes Anthropic’s policy; it does not establish which settings an individual user selected. Anthropic’s consumer training policy

Commercial products and organization API keys

Anthropic says commercial inputs and outputs are not used for model training by default. Exceptions include submitting feedback or explicitly opting in; its commercial training guidance also names participation in the Development Partner Program. If feedback is submitted, Anthropic says the entire related conversation may be stored in a secured backend for up to 10 years. That is a feedback-related retention treatment, not the standard retention period for every commercial conversation. Commercial training policy and commercial data-use guidance

How long can Anthropic retain the data?

A no-training default does not mean no storage. Anthropic describes different retention rules for API traffic, conversation-saving products, and Enterprise organizations.

Commercial API inputs and outputs

Anthropic says API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from its backend within 30 days of receipt or generation by default. Exceptions include different agreed terms, longer retention needed to enforce the Usage Policy, or legal compliance. This is the stated default for API data, not a guarantee that every Claude Code session is deleted on that schedule. Commercial retention policy

Products that save conversations

For commercial products that save and continue conversations, Anthropic says chats and coding sessions are retained for continuity and can be deleted from the user’s dashboard. This saved-conversation behavior is distinct from the API’s default deletion schedule.

Claude Enterprise retention controls

Anthropic says Enterprise data is retained indefinitely by default unless an owner sets a custom retention period. A Primary Owner or Owner can set the period, which runs from the last message in a chat or the last project activity. The minimum is 30 days, counted in 30-day months. After a custom period is saved, data outside it may be deleted immediately; expired data is permanently deleted. Enterprise retention controls

Does zero data retention cover Claude Code?

Sometimes, but it is not a general setting for every Claude Code login. Anthropic says zero-data-retention arrangements are available to some enterprise API customers subject to approval. Under an approved arrangement, inputs and outputs are not stored except as needed to comply with law or combat misuse; safety classifier results are still retained for Usage Policy enforcement.

Anthropic says the arrangement covers the API and products using a commercial organization API key, including Claude Code. It does not cover Claude for Work, Claude Max, Workbench, or beta products unless Anthropic and the customer explicitly agree otherwise. Confirm that your agreement is approved and that it applies to the exact product and key you use. Anthropic’s zero-data-retention scope

What to check before using Claude Code with private code

  1. Identify the account or key. Determine whether the session uses a Free, Pro, or Max consumer account, a commercial product, or a commercial organization API key. The training and retention policies are not interchangeable.
  2. Check training choices and feedback. For consumer accounts, review the applicable data-use settings and consider whether you have submitted feedback or opted in. For commercial use, check whether the organization participates in a program or has explicitly opted in.
  3. Check where conversations are saved. If you use a product that saves conversations, review its deletion controls rather than assuming the API deletion schedule applies.
  4. Ask an Enterprise owner about retention. Verify whether a custom period is set and what it covers; the default is indefinite.
  5. Verify any zero-data-retention agreement. Confirm approval, the exact product and API key covered, and any contractual exceptions. Do not infer coverage from the fact that you use Claude Code.

What Anthropic’s newer enterprise announcement establishes

On September 1, 2026, Anthropic announced Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, describing customer-controlled cloud storage combined with misuse safeguards and a phased rollout planned to start later in fall 2026. Claude Code was listed among the planned supported products. The announcement does not establish that the feature is generally available or enabled for a particular organization as of October 8, 2026. Enterprise customers should verify availability and activation with Anthropic rather than treating the announcement as an active control. Anthropic’s announcement
