Bedrock inference is operated by AWS; the first-party Anthropic API is operated by Anthropic. A third option, Claude Platform on AWS, is accessed through an AWS account but is Anthropic-operated. Choose by the operating boundary, identity and billing requirements, region and model availability, and the workload you expect—not by assuming one route is inherently safer or cheaper.
What is different about the three routes?
The provider you select determines who operates inference, which credentials and controls apply, and where usage is billed. “AWS” alone is not precise enough: Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS have different operators.

These routes have distinct API surfaces, authentication, feature availability, rate-limit ownership, consoles, and billing paths. Do not assume feature parity or identical release timing. There is no single “Claude Code on AWS” operating model that describes all three.
How do you set up Claude Code with Amazon Bedrock?
For Bedrock, you need an AWS account with Bedrock enabled, access to the Claude model you intend to use, and suitable IAM permissions. AWS requires first-time Anthropic model customers to submit use-case details before their first invocation. AWS describes this as generally a one-time step for the account or the AWS Organizations management account.

Use Claude Code’s Bedrock setup wizard
- Start Claude Code and choose the third-party platform sign-in option, then select Amazon Bedrock; if Claude Code is already running, enter
/setup-bedrock. - Choose an available credential source. The wizard can detect an AWS profile, use a Bedrock API key, accept an access key and secret, or use credentials already present in the environment.
- Select the AWS region and model, then complete the wizard. It stores the configuration in the user settings file.
Configure Bedrock manually or for a team
Set CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1, provide AWS credentials through the standard AWS provider chain, and configure a region if the active profile does not supply one. Confirm the IAM permissions, model access, and first-time Anthropic use-case submission before testing an invocation.
For a team rollout, pin model versions rather than assuming aliases such as opus or sonnet will always resolve to the version you intend. Claude Code defaults and model identifiers can change, while Bedrock availability can vary by account and region. Confirm the current model identifier and supported inference option for the target region before deployment.

Set up the Anthropic API route separately
The first-party API route uses an Anthropic Console/API credential and Anthropic billing. It does not use Bedrock credentials or Bedrock endpoints. Keep credentials out of source code and use your organization’s secret-management process; switching routes means changing the applicable credential, endpoint, and billing administration.
Where do prompts and code go, and what does that mean for security?
With Bedrock, model inference requests go to AWS Bedrock endpoints; with the first-party API, they go to Anthropic’s API. Anthropic’s commercial terms say it does not train generative models on code or prompts sent under commercial terms unless the customer opts in to data sharing for model improvement. That policy applies to commercial API and third-party-platform customers, but it is not the same as saying no information can ever reach Anthropic.

For Claude Code configured with Bedrock or Vertex, setting CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC limits traffic to essential telemetry, while model API calls go directly to the selected provider endpoint. This is a configuration-dependent statement, not a blanket guarantee for every setup or traffic type. Review the applicable provider terms and your Claude Code settings against your organization’s data-handling requirements.
A Bedrock operating boundary may suit an organization that already governs workloads through AWS accounts and IAM. The Anthropic API instead places inference operation and API administration with Anthropic. Neither boundary, by itself, establishes that a deployment is more secure: the conclusion depends on the threat model, contractual terms, configuration, and the controls around the coding agent.

Claude Code still needs guardrails on either route
Provider choice does not remove the risks of agentic coding. Claude Code documents permission modes, sandboxed shell execution, working-directory boundaries, and network approval controls. These can constrain actions, but an approved command may still have effects beyond the immediate edit. Review proposed code and commands, and grant only the access needed for the task.
- Identify who operates inference and which endpoint receives prompts and code.
- Check identity controls and least-privilege permissions for both cloud access and local tools.
- Review applicable data-retention and training terms, including any data-sharing opt-in.
- Confirm region and routing against residency requirements; verify monitoring and audit needs separately.
How much does Claude Code cost on Bedrock or the Anthropic API?
There is no fixed per-developer price for API-based use. API charges depend on token consumption, selected models, codebase size, and usage patterns such as automation and multiple concurrent sessions. Bedrock rates vary by model and tier; AWS may publish distinct charges for input, output, caching, batch, and other usage modes. The selected region and routing option can also affect the applicable rate.

Anthropic’s current Claude Code cost guide, accessed in 2026, reports an enterprise-deployment average of around $13 per developer per active day and $150–$250 per developer per month, and says 90% of users are below $30 per active day. These are Anthropic-published usage figures, not a forecast for a particular team; Anthropic says costs vary widely and recommends a pilot to establish a local baseline.
The dollar amount shown by Claude Code’s /usage command is a local estimate calculated from token counts at list price or an organization-configured model pricing table. The authoritative charge is on the applicable provider’s billing console.
Subscription use is a different cost model
Paid Claude plans include Claude Code, with usage limits shared with other Claude products. Anthropic’s public pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists Pro at $20 per month or $17 per month when billed annually, Max starting at $100 per month, and Enterprise at $20 per seat per month billed annually plus usage at API rates. Prices exclude applicable tax; plan terms and usage limits can change. A subscription seat price is not directly comparable with uncapped API or Bedrock consumption without accounting for included limits and workload.
Build a like-for-like estimate
- Choose the model family and version you expect to deploy, and verify that it is available through each route in the required region.
- Estimate input, output, and cached token volume using a representative pilot. Include background tasks, automation, and the number of active sessions.
- Apply current, region-specific rates for the route and usage modes you will actually use; include any applicable tier or batch pricing.
- For subscription plans, account for shared usage limits and expected overages or separate API use rather than comparing only the seat fee.
- Compare actual provider billing after the pilot with Claude Code’s local
/usageestimate, and revise the workload assumptions.
Without a defined workload and current rate calculation, a claim that Bedrock or the Anthropic API is universally cheaper is not supported.

- Evaluate Bedrock if your team is standardized on AWS IAM, account policies, and cloud billing, provided the required model and regional inference options are available.
- Evaluate the Anthropic API if direct access to an Anthropic-operated API, its organization controls, and its billing path fit your requirements.
- Evaluate Claude Platform on AWS separately if AWS access and commercial integration are important but you specifically want an Anthropic-operated service rather than Bedrock inference.
Before rollout, make the choice against your actual data-flow and residency requirements, identity model, feature needs, and a pilot cost baseline. No independent comparative benchmark establishes that one route has better security, latency, or total cost for every deployment.
