If an MCP server looks connected in Claude Code but its tools do not work, check three things in order: whether Claude Code loaded the intended configuration, whether the server actually connected and authenticated, and whether the tool is approved and available. This order helps separate a scope problem from a startup failure or a permission block.
1. Is Claude Code loading the server you intended?
MCP servers can be configured at local, project, or user scope, and scope affects where a server is available. A project-scoped configuration may be stored in .mcp.json; a server configured in one project or context may not be present in another. Start by checking the active project and the server’s configured scope.

- Run
claude mcp listto see configured servers. - Run
claude mcp get <name>to inspect a specific server’s configuration. - If the server is missing, confirm that it was added at the scope you intended and that Claude Code is running in the correct project.

2. Does the server actually connect and authenticate?
A server can be configured without its process starting successfully or its remote endpoint authenticating. Check the path that matches the server’s transport.

Local stdio server
Confirm that the configured command and arguments can run in the same environment as Claude Code. On native Windows, Anthropic documents a case where an npx server may need a cmd /c wrapper; omitting it can result in “Connection closed.” This is a Windows-specific diagnostic, not a universal change to make for every server. Compare your command with the Windows example in the MCP guide.
Remote server using OAuth
Open Claude Code’s /mcp menu to authenticate a remote server that requires OAuth. The guide documents OAuth support for SSE and HTTP transports, and the same menu provides a way to clear authentication. Check that the endpoint and credentials correspond to the server you mean to use; seeing a server in the list does not establish that its authentication succeeded.

Slow startup
If a server takes longer to start than Claude Code allows, MCP_TIMEOUT can change the startup wait limit. Increasing it only gives startup more time; it does not confirm that the process or endpoint is healthy. See the MCP guide for the documented setting.
3. Is the tool approved and available?
A successful connection does not by itself mean the tool is permitted in the current session. Project-scoped MCP configuration may require approval before use. Check for an approval request, then inspect the session’s permission settings rather than broadly bypassing prompts.

- Confirm the exact server name and tool name you expect to call.
- Check whether the project’s MCP configuration is awaiting approval.
- Review whether permission rules allow that specific tool. The CLI reference documents
--allowedToolsand--disallowedTools; make a narrow adjustment only when needed. - Try a minimal request that clearly requires the intended tool, then check whether that tool is invoked.
Anthropic’s MCP guide covers project configuration and approval. The CLI reference documents permission flags, while the SDK documentation describes MCP tool names in the mcp__<serverName>__<toolName> pattern.
If all three gates pass, check installation and network settings
Verify the Claude Code installation
Run claude doctor to inspect the installation type and version. For more detail about what happens during a turn, start Claude Code with --verbose to display turn-by-turn output that can help identify where the failure occurs. Anthropic documents claude doctor in its setup guide and --verbose in the CLI reference.

Check corporate proxy and certificate configuration
On a managed network, proxy or certificate settings can affect connectivity. Anthropic’s corporate proxy guide documents HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY, and certificate-bundle settings. It also states that NO_PROXY and SOCKS proxies are not supported. Follow the current guide for the exact environment-variable setup; a connection problem alone does not show that any one proxy setting is responsible.

Use the failure point to narrow the cause
- Server absent from
claude mcp list: investigate scope, project, and configuration first. - Server listed but connection closes: inspect the local command and environment, or the remote endpoint and authentication path.
- Server connects but the expected tool is not used: check project approval, permission rules, and the exact tool name.
- Those checks look correct: collect
claude doctordetails and verbose output, then examine applicable proxy and certificate settings.
