The protection comes from the boundary—not from the model: limit the files Claude can reach, control its network access, and decide what persists before you start.
What “disposable” does—and does not—mean
A sandbox separates the agent’s work from at least some of the host computer’s files and capabilities. That can reduce the damage from a bad command, unwanted package, or compromised agent. It does not make arbitrary software safe, guarantee that no data can leave, or automatically erase everything when a session ends.

There are two distinct controls to consider: filesystem access and network access. Filesystem rules determine which paths the agent can read or change. Network rules determine which destinations it can contact. Anthropic says both matter: without either boundary, a compromised agent could expose sensitive files or communicate outward. “Disposable computer” can describe several different setups, and their boundaries are not interchangeable:

These distinctions are documented in Docker’s Claude Code guide, Docker’s security documentation, and Anthropic’s managed-agent environment documentation. Confirm current availability and defaults before relying on a particular interface or setting.
Option 1: Use Claude Code’s local sandbox
Anthropic describes a Claude Code sandbox runtime that uses operating-system primitives, including Linux bubblewrap and macOS Seatbelt. It is designed to constrain Claude Code’s direct actions and subprocesses, with configurable file paths and network hosts. Anthropic’s Help Center describes the /sandbox command as providing file and network isolation, with choices for sandboxed bash using automatic permission handling, sandboxed bash with regular permissions, or no sandbox.

Anthropic characterizes the runtime as a research preview in its engineering article. Availability, platform support, and labels can change, so check the current Claude Code sandbox documentation and Help Center guidance before following setup instructions. The key decision is not simply whether sandbox mode is on: inspect which directories and hosts are actually allowed.

sbx run claude ~/my-projectThe project directory is mounted into the sandbox, so changes made there are changes to host files. A sandbox can also be created without a workspace path and attached by name, as described in Docker’s Claude Code instructions. Docker says Claude Code requires an Anthropic API key or subscription; host user-level settings such as ~/.claude are not automatically present in the sandbox.
Docker’s documented default startup command is claude --dangerously-skip-permissions. That is a consequential default, not a general recommendation to bypass permissions: it relies on the sandbox to contain the agent. Docker documents that the agent has full control inside its VM, including sudo privileges, package managers, and a private Docker Engine. If the sandbox boundary is misconfigured, or files are mounted unnecessarily, skipping in-tool permission prompts does not protect those exposed resources.

Docker’s security documentation says outbound TCP is blocked unless an explicit rule permits a destination. It also says credentials are not available unless provided through sbx secret or environment variables. Treat each credential you add as accessible to the processes running in that environment.

Anthropic describes cloud sessions running in isolated sandboxes and says sensitive Git credentials and signing keys are not placed inside Claude Code’s sandbox; a proxy handles Git interactions using scoped credentials. Its managed-agent documentation describes a fresh Linux container for each session, even when sessions share an environment configuration.

Do not confuse those managed-agent guarantees with settings in a local Claude Code installation or a consumer cloud session. Check the documentation for the specific product and mode you are using. In limited-network mode, Anthropic documents an explicit host allowlist, but an allowed host is still a possible route for data exfiltration after a successful prompt injection. An allowlist narrows destinations; it does not make every permitted destination harmless.
Set the boundary before letting the agent work
- Choose the environment and its persistence model. Decide whether the project will be mounted from the host, copied into the sandbox, or kept in a persistent environment. For Docker, a direct-mounted workspace remains on the host, and VM contents persist across stop and restart until the sandbox is removed with
sbx rm. - Expose only necessary files. Give Claude access to the project it needs, not your home directory or unrelated workspaces. Keep personal files, private keys, and unnecessary configuration out of mounted directories and images.
- Restrict outbound connections. Allow only the hosts needed for the task and review that list periodically. A permitted host may still be used to transmit data; network restrictions reduce exposure but cannot guarantee safe behavior.
- Handle credentials deliberately. Avoid putting secrets in project files or images. If a credential is needed, use a scoped, managed injection mechanism where available, and rotate it if you suspect exposure.
- Review changes outside the agent’s control. Inspect file changes and generated scripts before using them on your main machine. A sandbox limits the blast radius; it does not establish that installed software or output is trustworthy.
- Clean up the right thing. Remove the sandbox when you no longer need its VM state. Separately inspect or revert changes in host-mounted directories, because deleting the VM does not delete those host files.
Why fewer permission prompts are not proof of safety
Anthropic reports an internal finding that sandboxing reduced permission prompts by 84% in its own usage. The company’s exact statement is: “In our internal usage, we’ve found that sandboxing safely reduces permission prompts by 84%.” This is an internal result reported in Anthropic’s engineering article, not an independent benchmark or a universal outcome. Fewer prompts can make work smoother, but they do not show that a particular configuration protects your files or secrets.
