Claude Code runs an AI coding agent on a cloud task that you can monitor or steer; Codespaces gives you a cloud-hosted development environment to work in. Choose Claude Code when you want to delegate coding work to Claude, and Codespaces when you need a configurable remote workspace. They can be complementary, but one is not a substitute for the other.
How Claude Code cloud sessions and Codespaces differ
| Area | Claude Code cloud sessions | GitHub Codespaces |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Run and supervise Claude coding tasks on cloud infrastructure. Anthropic’s cloud-session documentation | Provide a hosted environment for interactive development. GitHub’s Codespaces overview |
| How you connect | Browser, Claude mobile app, desktop app, or CLI. | Browser, Visual Studio Code, or GitHub CLI. |
| What you configure | Cloud environment settings, including network access, environment variables, and setup scripts; Anthropic-hosted and documented self-hosted organization environments are available. | A development container on a virtual machine, customizable through repository dev-container configuration. |
| GitHub workflow | Connect a GitHub account and grant repository access; documented options include cloud sessions and pull-request automation. | Start a cloud workspace from a repository and work with its configured development environment. |
| Eligibility and billing | Depends on Claude plan or account eligibility and organization policy. The setup documentation does not provide a comparable workload price. Anthropic setup documentation | Monthly billing; compute, storage, usage, quotas, and budgets affect the total. The overview refers readers to separate billing information. |
The products therefore occupy different layers of a development workflow: Claude Code cloud sessions provide agent execution, while Codespaces provides a workspace. GitHub’s overview does not establish Codespaces itself as an AI coding agent, nor does it describe Anthropic’s cloud-session task workflow.
What happens in a Claude Code cloud session?
A cloud session lets Claude work on a coding task in a cloud environment rather than requiring your laptop to remain open. Anthropic says the session continues after you close your laptop and can be checked or steered from another device. You can start a cloud session through Claude’s supported interfaces, including the browser at claude.ai/code and the CLI command claude --cloud. The CLI command starts a cloud session for a repository; it is distinct from running Claude Code locally.
This model is useful when you want to hand off a task, let the agent work while you are away, and return to review its changes. It is not the same as opening a persistent remote desktop or development workspace and doing all the coding interactively yourself.

Moving work between cloud and terminal
Anthropic documents a way to continue a cloud session in a terminal with --teleport. The handoff has requirements, including using the same account and repository and having a clean local Git state. A terminal session cannot simply be pushed to the cloud using the CLI; Anthropic documents a separate send-to-cloud path in Desktop. Check local changes and repository state before planning a handoff. See Anthropic’s cloud-session workflow details.
What do you get with GitHub Codespaces?
A Codespace is a hosted development environment, not an AI agent by itself. GitHub runs a Docker container on a virtual machine, and you can access the workspace through a browser, VS Code, or GitHub CLI. Its purpose is to let you work in a remote environment associated with a repository rather than configure and run the project entirely on your local machine. GitHub describes the Codespaces environment and access options.
Rank #2
For reproducible project setup, a repository can include dev-container configuration that defines the environment. GitHub says the default environment uses an Ubuntu image; when a repository has no dev-container configuration, Codespaces clones it into a default dev-container image. This makes Codespaces a natural fit when a team wants to describe its development environment alongside the project rather than rely on each developer’s machine-specific setup.
GitHub’s overview lists selectable configurations ranging from 2 cores, 8 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage to 32 cores, 128 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. These are documented machine options, not performance benchmarks or a recommendation that every project needs the largest configuration. Check GitHub’s overview for the stated configuration range.

How GitHub access and automation work with Claude
Claude cloud sessions need a GitHub connection for repository workflows. Anthropic documents two setup methods: authorize the Claude GitHub App, or run /web-setup in the terminal to send the local GitHub CLI token to your Claude account. In Anthropic-hosted environments, the documentation says GitHub credentials are encrypted on Anthropic’s servers rather than placed in the session VM, and VM Git operations pass through a GitHub proxy. These are Anthropic’s descriptions of its hosted setup; teams should still apply their own security review and least-privilege rules. Anthropic explains the connection and credential model.
Anthropic also documents optional pull-request auto-fix. It requires the Claude GitHub App to be installed on the repository. The feature can respond to clear CI failures and review comments; when a request is ambiguous or significant, it can ask for clarification instead of proceeding. Availability of repository actions depends on the permissions granted during GitHub setup.

Can you use Claude Code with Codespaces?
A team may use both: Codespaces can provide the hosted, repository-configured workspace, while Claude Code cloud sessions can run delegated agent tasks. That is a possible workflow combination, not a guarantee of a first-party integration or automatic sharing of credentials, environment settings, or session state.
Before adopting both, validate how the repository, credentials, required tools, environment variables, network access, and organization policies will work in the specific setup. If you only need a cloud workspace for interactive coding, Codespaces may be sufficient. If you want Claude to carry out and report on a coding task, the cloud-session workflow is the relevant feature to assess.
Who can use Claude Code cloud sessions?
Anthropic’s documentation lists Pro, Max, Team, and qualifying Enterprise seats as eligible for cloud-session features. It also notes restrictions for users of third-party providers and organizations with Zero Data Retention policies; the documentation says Zero Data Retention organizations cannot use cloud-session features. Because plans and organization controls can change, confirm current eligibility and policy with Anthropic and your administrator before building a workflow around cloud sessions. See Anthropic’s current cloud-session eligibility and restrictions.
How to choose between them
- Choose Claude Code cloud sessions if your priority is delegating a coding task to Claude, monitoring or steering it while away, reviewing its diff, or using the documented pull-request auto-fix workflow—and your account, GitHub permissions, and organization policy allow it.
- Choose Codespaces if you need a cloud-hosted workspace for interactive work, particularly when repeatable, repository-defined development setup matters or you want to use a browser or VS Code to access the environment.
- Consider both if you need a configurable hosted workspace and separately want Claude to execute cloud coding tasks. Validate the exact integration and security requirements rather than assuming the products share a ready-made workflow.
What should you compare on cost?
There is no supported universal price winner from the available product documentation. GitHub describes Codespaces billing as monthly and directs users to separate information for pricing, storage, and usage; the final amount depends on the configuration and usage. Anthropic’s setup documentation does not provide an aligned total-cost figure for a representative cloud-session workload. Compare the current terms for your own expected use—including compute and storage for Codespaces and the applicable Claude plan and usage terms—rather than comparing an assumed cost per task. GitHub’s overview links to its billing details; Anthropic’s setup page covers account paths.
