The right next step depends on its ingredients: if it contains topical minoxidil and your scalp becomes itchy, dry, scaly, or red, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises stopping it and seeing a dermatologist. Do not assume every hair-growth serum contains minoxidil or that switching formulas will solve the reaction.
What to do first
- Pause the serum. Do not apply another dose to an irritated scalp.
- Check the exact product label. Note its active ingredient, inactive ingredients, directions, and warnings; keep the package or take a photo of the ingredient list.
- Get advice if symptoms persist, are significant, or worsen. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether to restart, change the amount, or consider another formulation. Do not test another formula on an actively irritated scalp.
If symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, seek urgent local medical care.

If the serum contains minoxidil
Minoxidil can cause scalp irritation. The AAD lists dryness, scaling, itching, and redness as possible signs and advises: “If this happens, it’s best to stop using minoxidil and see your dermatologist.” Read the AAD guidance on female-pattern hair loss.
Follow the warnings on the specific product in your hand as well. One official DailyMed minoxidil foam consumer label says to stop use and ask a doctor for scalp irritation or redness. It also lists chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, and swelling of the hands or feet as reasons to stop and ask a doctor. Labels can differ between products.

Why the scalp may be reacting
Itching and flakes alone do not identify the cause. The product could be involved, but symptoms by themselves do not establish an allergy, contact dermatitis, dandruff, or a reaction to a particular ingredient. A dermatologist can assess the scalp and help determine whether the product or another condition is responsible.
If the serum does not contain minoxidil, the minoxidil-specific guidance above may not apply. Use the exact product label and seek professional advice if the reaction is persistent or concerning; the ingredients and symptoms alone are not enough to identify the cause.

Would switching to minoxidil foam help?
Only consider a change if you have confirmed the product contains minoxidil and have discussed it with a clinician. The AAD says a newer foam formulation seems to reduce scalp-irritation risk compared with solution, but that relative observation does not explain an individual reaction or guarantee that foam will prevent symptoms.
