One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDan Malone says an AI-assisted audit of his Home Assistant setup uncovered duplicate automations, stale phone-notification references, and a blinds automation that had grown to 636 lines. His account is a useful example of configuration debt: a smart home can keep working while its files and entity lists collect confusing, outdated, or overlapping pieces. It is one person’s case study, not evidence that these problems are common across Home Assistant installations.
What the audit found in one Home Assistant installation
In his January 2026 case study, Dan Malone describes using Claude Code with MCP tooling to inspect a long-running Home Assistant setup. The audit went beyond reading YAML: it considered automations, entities, integrations, dashboards, logs, and state data. The observations and figures below are Malone’s, not an independently reproduced audit.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- He reported 47 automations and 3,997 entities, including 1,637 disabled entities.
- His
automations.yamlfile was 2,312 lines long. - He found duplicate copies of a presence automation, as well as duplicate dishwasher and “both away” automations.
- He reported 31 references to a notification service for a phone that had been replaced.
- A kitchen blinds automation was 636 lines long before simplification.
- His cleanup discussion also described overlapping integrations, unused HACS components, disabled mobile-app entities, duplicate dashboard controls, and room/entity mismatches. In one integration-cleanup discussion, he reported 578 disabled mobile-app entities.
Those examples show how a setup can accumulate leftovers without one dramatic failure announcing them. An automation may still run while another does nearly the same job; a notification action may still point to an obsolete device; and an oversized automation may be harder to understand or safely change than a smaller, clearer one.
Malone’s cleanup plan estimated approximately 1,500 lines removed, approximately 1,000 orphaned entities removed, and approximately 16 hours of effort. Those are estimates in a plan, not verified completed results.

Why basic YAML and reference mistakes matter
Home Assistant says most configuration can be handled through its interface, although some features and integrations still require configuration.yaml or other YAML files. In YAML, indentation defines structure, tabs are not allowed for indentation, and two spaces per level are the convention. A misplaced space can change how a setting is interpreted or make a file invalid.
- Indentation: Keep nested keys aligned consistently; use spaces, not tabs.
- Entity IDs: They are case-sensitive. A reference that differs in capitalization may not point to the intended entity.
- Values such as
onandoff: YAML can interpret unquoted forms as booleans. Quote them when a literal text value is intended. - Stale service or entity references: A phone replacement or renamed entity can leave automations calling something that no longer exists or no longer has the intended role.
- Duplicates and overlap: Two automations can respond to similar conditions, making behavior difficult to reason about even if neither file has a syntax error.
Home Assistant’s YAML syntax guide documents the indentation, case-sensitivity, and quoting details. The platform’s configuration troubleshooting guidance identifies invalid configuration as a common problem and recommends checking logs; configuration files must be UTF-8 encoded.
What Claude Code can—and cannot—establish
Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal tool for writing, reviewing, and shipping code. In Malone’s account, the benefit was using an assistant to examine existing setup details and surface patterns worth checking. He put it this way: “The most valuable AI assistance was not generating new automations – it was analyzing what I already had and finding problems.”

- [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
That makes AI findings useful as leads, not proof. A model can flag duplicate-looking logic or a reference that appears outdated, but you still need to confirm what an entity does, whether two automations are intentionally distinct, and what would happen if a proposed change were applied. The case study does not establish a general error rate or show that AI review is more reliable than manual review.
Claude Code is also not Home Assistant’s authoritative configuration validator. Home Assistant provides its own check for configuration files, which validates without loading or applying them. A successful configuration check does not, by itself, prove that an automation will behave correctly at runtime.

- Make the current state reviewable. Back up the configuration and, if using version control, commit or otherwise preserve a known-good state before editing. Malone describes using Git in his workflow; it is a safeguard in his account, not a Home Assistant requirement.
- Inspect files and system evidence. Look at the relevant YAML, automation list, entities, logs, and dashboards. Ask an AI assistant to identify suspicious patterns and explain why each one may matter, rather than asking it to rewrite everything at once.
- Verify every finding in Home Assistant. Check whether an entity exists, whether a notification target is current, and whether apparently duplicate automations serve different situations. Do not delete disabled entities or components solely because they look unused.
- Review the proposed diff. Keep changes small enough to understand. Reject edits whose effects you cannot explain, and preserve a way to restore the previous version.
- Run Home Assistant’s configuration check before applying changes. In Home Assistant, use the
homeassistant.check_configaction. It reads and validates YAML without applying it; only administrators can run it. Errors are reported through notifications and logs. - Apply changes deliberately, then verify behavior. Check the resulting entity states and relevant automations after reload or restart. A clean configuration check catches configuration errors, not every logic error or unexpected runtime outcome.
Home Assistant’s configuration documentation advises checking validity after changing configuration or automation files and notes that checks also occur automatically when configuration is reloaded or Home Assistant restarts. It lists the File editor, Studio Code Server, and Samba among editing options; Studio Code Server provides syntax checking and entity autocomplete. Editor feedback is convenient, but it is distinct from Home Assistant’s application-specific check.

Be cautious with access to a live smart home
Malone says his workflow had production access and could query or control entities through MCP tools. That is a meaningful boundary: a connected tool may be able to interact with devices, not merely read text files. Review the permissions granted to any integration, understand which actions it can take, and do not let an assistant apply consequential changes without your inspection. Keep a rollback path and validate configuration before putting edits into service.

Anthropic’s separate Claude Code security-review feature is documented for common code security concerns such as injection, authentication, insecure data handling, and dependency vulnerabilities. It should not be mistaken for Home Assistant YAML validation.
Why an audit may beat adding another automation
New features are attractive, but old configuration can quietly make a setup harder to maintain. Malone’s case suggests a practical starting point: identify what exists, check whether references still match the devices and entities in use, and simplify only after confirming the purpose of each piece. His advice was: “Start with an audit, not new features.” Treat that as the case-study author’s recommendation, not an official Home Assistant rule.
