The right choice depends on how you are billed, what your plan includes, which model and tools your tasks use, and how much successful work you get for that spend. Compare costs on your own representative tasks—not by headline subscription price alone.
Why a lower subscription price may not mean lower coding costs
“Token cost” can refer to different things: API charges for model usage, credits consumed under a product plan, or usage covered by a subscription allowance. Those are not directly interchangeable. A plan’s monthly fee does not, by itself, show what a coding task costs, how much usage is included, or what happens when an allowance runs out.

Usage also depends on the work being done. OpenAI says Codex consumption can vary with the model, where a task runs, its complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools. GitHub Copilot’s billing is model-specific. Anthropic documents prompt caching for Claude Code: cache reads can make later turns less expensive, but cached content still occupies context-window space. These billing and usage differences make a single monthly price a poor stand-in for cost per completed task.

The official documentation linked below describes billing and usage rules; it does not establish a controlled comparison showing which product completes the same coding work for less. The table reflects the documentation checked on October 4, 2026. Check the linked live vendor pages before choosing a plan, since prices, limits, and availability can change.

How the main documented options bill coding-agent use
| Product | Billing model and included use | What happens beyond included use | Model and task factors | Usage visibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Anthropic documents usage limits and a team structure that can combine a seat charge with usage billed at API rates. The applicable plan and account billing path matter. | For API-billed usage, usage is charged at API rates; confirm the billing path and current plan terms. | Model usage and prompt caching affect consumption. Cache reads can reduce later-turn cost, while cached context remains in the context window. | The /cost command can show token and dollar usage for API-billed sessions. |
| OpenAI Codex | Available across ChatGPT plans, with usage limits that vary by plan. | Signing in with an API key uses API pricing. Team billing eligibility can depend on the workspace arrangement. | Consumption varies by model, task location, complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools. | The cited plan help describes usage limits and factors affecting consumption; it does not establish a single comparable per-task cost. |
| GitHub Copilot | GitHub publishes model-specific billing and pricing rules; there is not one cost that applies uniformly to every model. | Consult the live model pricing table for the billing rule attached to the model you use. | Identify the model when comparing, because pricing is model-specific. | The model pricing documentation provides the relevant billing details; it does not establish cost per successful coding task. |

What to check for each option
Claude Code: inspect API-billed sessions and caching
If you use Claude Code through API billing, /cost provides session-level token and dollar usage, which can help you identify which tasks consume the most. Anthropic also documents prompt caching: later turns that reuse cached content can cost less, but the cached content still counts toward context-window space. That distinction matters when a long-running task both reuses prior context and approaches the model’s context limit. Anthropic’s usage guide explains the usage and limits; its pricing page describes available plan structures. Check which structure applies to your account rather than assuming a subscription and API use are billed the same way.
Codex: separate plan allowance from API-key use
OpenAI’s Codex plan help says access spans ChatGPT plans, but usage limits vary by plan and consumption depends on several task and configuration factors. If you sign in with an API key, usage follows API pricing rather than the plan allowance. For teams, OpenAI’s pricing announcement, published April 2, 2026 and updated June 24, 2026, says new Codex pay-as-you-go seats would no longer be available for Business plans from June 24, 2026, while existing seats were unaffected. Because team eligibility and billing arrangements can change, verify the current workspace terms.
Copilot: compare the model you actually select
GitHub’s model pricing documentation lists model-specific billing. Check the entry for the model you intend to use and the current billing rule before estimating costs; treating “Copilot” as one uniform price obscures that difference. The documentation does not show how much any model costs per successfully completed coding task.

Run a fair comparison on your own work
A useful comparison asks how much each setup costs to complete the same kind of work to an acceptable standard. Keep the exercise consistent so you do not mistake a different task, model, or usage path for a price advantage.
- Choose representative tasks. Select a small set drawn from your real workload, such as a bug fix, a test addition, or a bounded refactor. Use the same repository state and task requirements for each tool.
- Record the setup. Note the date, product and plan, model, tool version if available, and whether the session uses a subscription allowance, credits, or an API key. Record relevant settings and the task context so another run is comparable.
- Measure actual usage. Capture the usage or cost information the product exposes. For API-billed Claude Code sessions, use
/cost. For plan-based usage or other products, use the available account or model billing information; do not infer a dollar cost where the service does not show one. - Judge completion consistently. Record whether the task was completed successfully against the same criteria—for example, whether the requested change works and required tests pass. A low usage figure for an incomplete result is not a lower cost for completed work.
- Compare like with like. Separate included plan usage from additional API or other charges. Compare both your actual out-of-pocket spend and, where the information is available, marginal usage cost. Repeat enough representative tasks to avoid basing a decision on one unusually small or large job.
This is a method for evaluating your own workflow, not a published cross-vendor benchmark. The reviewed vendor documents do not provide a controlled same-task comparison or a common measure of successful work.

- You are already using Claude Code with API billing: inspect session costs and consider whether prompt caching reduces later-turn charges for your repeated-context work. Keep the context-window trade-off in view.
- You have a ChatGPT plan that includes Codex access: check its current usage limit and track how your actual tasks consume that allowance. If using an API key instead, evaluate API charges separately from the plan.
- You work in Copilot and can choose among models: check the current model-specific pricing for the model you actually select, then compare it on representative tasks.
- You are considering another agent or editor: verify its official pricing, included limits, and whether model-provider API charges are separate. Current plan specifics for other named tools are not established by the official documentation cited here, so do not rely on comparison-blog estimates without checking the vendor and provider terms.
Choose based on the billing route you will actually use, the allowance you can realistically consume, and the cost of successful work in your own task mix. None of the documented billing pages alone identifies a universal lowest-cost Claude Code replacement.
