Anthropic’s documented Gmail integration can retrieve email context, but its help page says it cannot create or modify emails. Sending requires a separate connector that explicitly provides an email-sending action, plus permission to use it.
Can Claude send emails from Gmail?
Not through Anthropic’s documented Gmail integration alone. That integration is described as a way for Claude to access, search, and retrieve information from a connected Gmail account; it does not create or modify emails. See Anthropic’s Gmail and Google Calendar integration help page.

Claude can use external tools when a connector makes those actions available. Anthropic’s custom-connector documentation describes remote MCP servers that can provide tools to Claude, including tools that create or modify data. That general capability does not mean every connector can send email, or that Claude has a built-in Gmail send action. Check the specific connector’s available tools and requested permissions before relying on it.

What you need before setting up email sending
- A connector for the service you want to send from, with a tool explicitly described as sending or creating email. A connector that can read messages or prepare text is not necessarily able to send.
- An account you can authenticate with and authorization that includes the specific action. Review the scopes or other access requested, and choose the narrowest useful permissions.
- A supported Claude surface and, if you are in a Team or Enterprise organization, any required administrator approval. Current availability and interface details can change, so check Anthropic’s live connector instructions.
The available official sources do not verify a particular named email-sending connector or establish its current permissions and confirmation behavior. Do not assume a connector works for sending until its tool list and authorization details confirm it.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Connect and test a directory connector
- In Claude, open the connector directory through the “Search and tools” interface.
- Select the service you intend to use and choose its connect option.
- Authenticate with the external account. Read the permission request before approving it.
- Enable the connector for the conversation, then ask Claude to perform a low-risk, specific test of the capability you need. For example, first check whether it can find a particular message; do not treat successful reading as proof that it can send.
For a sending workflow, inspect the connector’s listed tools and confirm there is an explicit send-email action. Claude Academy recommends giving specific instructions and splitting complex requests into stages; its guide says to “Break complex tasks into steps rather than asking it to do everything at once.” Read the Claude Academy connector guide.
Set up a custom remote MCP connector
If you use a custom connector rather than one from the directory, an administrator or user must add its remote MCP server URL and configure authentication. The server must be reachable from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure; a service running only on your own computer is not a remote connector. In Team and Enterprise organizations, an owner may need to add the connector before members can connect to it. Once it is available, connect and enable it for the conversation, then check which tools it exposes.

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Anthropic explains that “Remote MCP servers give Claude tools it can invoke during your conversation” and that “Claude can only access resources that you’ve given the server permission to access”. Read the current custom connectors using remote MCP instructions for current setup and plan details.

| Remote web connector | A cloud service you sign in to; the remote MCP server is reached from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure. | Anthropic says remote connectors work across Claude surfaces. | That the connector has an explicit send action, requests appropriate permissions, and is available under your account or organization. |
| Desktop extension | Tools that run locally or need access to local files, the clipboard, or operating-system features. | Claude Desktop and Claude Code, rather than Claude web or mobile, according to Anthropic’s connector guidance. | That the extension supports the email service and sending action you need, and that its local access is appropriate. |
These routes are not interchangeable: a local MCP setup and a remote connector have different access paths and supported surfaces. See Anthropic’s guide to when to use desktop and web connectors.

Review every message before it is sent
Once you have confirmed a connector exposes a send action, use Claude to prepare the message first. Ask it to show the recipient, subject, and complete body; check each field yourself, then authorize sending only if the content and destination are correct. This is a prudent review practice, not a claim that every connector provides a particular confirmation screen.
Keep write-capable tools disabled when they are not needed. Anthropic warns that custom connectors can change behavior and may present prompt-injection risks; a remote server may read, create, modify, or delete data depending on its implementation and the permissions it receives. For Claude Research, Anthropic advises disabling external write tools because Research may invoke connector tools automatically without further approval.

Understand Gmail integration data and connector risks
Anthropic’s Gmail integration help page says Claude accesses a connected account when a question requires it, retrieves the minimum information needed, respects the account’s existing permissions, and does not train models on integration data. It also says retrieved data is stored on Anthropic’s servers with the associated chat and can be removed by deleting that chat. These statements describe the documented Gmail integration; they should not be assumed to cover every custom connector.
